Scientific Abstract

The goal of this project was to suggest a location in Houston to relocate Louisiana flood
refugees, and ensure that they have adequate access to food and water supply to filter with
designs we have created. We have decided to establish their new community in of one many
great Houston parks called George Bush County Park in southwest Houston. We designed and
tested our water filter to see if it was suitable for the refugees. Then, we researched for the
adequate area to move them in, and the amount of resources needed to support the whole
population of refugees. One problem we faced was what size to build our water filter and how
many people it would aim to provide for. We tested multiple designs that could be satisfactory
for the refugees and decided to keep our main two designs: the same materials in a 5-gallon
container and a 1-liter bottle. As we did our research, we realized that the main source of water
for the Louisiana refugees is large enough only to sustain approximately half a million people for
half of a year. In addition, our water filter designs failed to filter out E. coli bacterium, which
means that the filters will not provide the abundance of clean water that the refugees will require.
