Farmland Rainwater Harvesting Systems

Rain Water being run off Can be utilized to

Re-Charge Groundwater Source

FARMLAND V WIRE INJECTION WELL TECHNOLOGY invented by

Farmland Rainwater harvesting system in the year 2002 was
significantly upgraded in the year 2007 due to constant Research &
Development both at the hydraulic, R&D Lab and at the field level.
This technology is unique in many ways.
It uses Gravitational Energy and the use of eco-friendly materials
having a long life span.
Due to the positive results obtained in enhancing the ground water
table in severely depleted areas , this technology has found wide
recognition in various Central and State Government sponsored
sustainable schemes in providing water security for drinking and
farming to the rural community in the drought-prone areas of
Karnataka state.
Because of the success obtained at the Government level, the
technology is now gaining ground in the Private sector.

As we know Rainwater is the purest form of water, so when this

water is let deep into the ground , that is below 30 Meters, it passes
through sandy loamy soil / dry joint,/cracks & fissures etc and gets
filtered further and thereafter passes through the earth crest &
reaches the ground water Source and helps in building the
groundwater table and also Because of the dilution effect, the
quality of ground water improves considerably from the first
Monsoon itself.

Assured supply of water for irrigation and potable water, in rural and
urban areas
Increased water table reduces pumping costs.
Recharge of Groundwater, replenishes the deeper layers of the earths
crust which in turn insulates the earth from rise in temperature,
reducing global warming
Groundwater Recharge will bridge the gap between acute shortage &
available water during the Peak summer months.
Provides hygienic and safe drinking water( Death and disease, especially
in children under the age of five due to unsafe drinking water )
Rain water can enhance limited ground water resources. More
importantly, with reduced drawing out of ground water, low yield bore
wells and springs can last indefinitely.
Seawater ingression can be checked in coastal line
Reduces hardness , salinity and TDS contents in the bore well
Reduces significant carbon foot prints
Prevents water logging in low lying areas.

The Recharging structures

of V wire Injection wells
are identified through VES
(Vertical Electrical
Sounding)

In FL- V wire Technology

most of the material used
is eco-friendly and
recyclable

This technology does not

employ moving parts; the
assured life span of the
material is a minimum of
20 years. Technology
works on the Gravitational
Principle

The maintenance cost

involves de-silting of the
silt trap and replacement
of filtration media once in
5 years.

This technology has found wide acceptance both in Public and Private
sectors because of its quick success rate to replenish the dried and
depleting bore wells. More than 5,000 installations of this unique Vwire injection well technology have been installed Pan India in
various Government sponsored projects under National Rural
drinking water supply programs, Suvarna Jala and also through
various Zillah Panchayaths, Gram Panchayaths, Municipalities,
Nirmithi Kendras, Urban water supply Boards, Rural Water Supply
Boards, Ground Water Development Agencies, Konkan Railways,
Apartments Commercial buildings, School Buildings , Industries and
Corporate sector like Infosys , LANCO highway Projects , SKF , VKC, UB
distilleries and agricultural sectors .

The average rainfall considered is 800 mm/year. A precipitation

of just 12.5 mm can yield 50,000 liters of water per acre. Even if
40% of water is lost due to evaporation / Runoff and soil
absorption; a minimum of 30,000 liters of assured quantity of
water can be recharged into the Groundwater Source.
Considering an average rainfall spread of 70 days in a year, the
approximate total quantum of water percolating into
groundwater source is 2.1 Million liters per Injection well.
In coastal areas because of higher Rainfall (annual rainfall of
3000 to 3500 MM ) the minimum quantum of water percolating
is 50,000 liters per day . Considering an average spread over for
90 days in a year , 4.5 Million liters of water can be injected
per well.

The Technology has gained wide acceptance in

reaching thousands of farmers and individual
households through Public-Private initiative,
especially through Governmental agencies and wide
net work of dealers.
Farmland has recharged over 5000 bore wells
both in the private and public sector in Rural and
Urban areas.

V-wire type vs Conventional Type:

Conventional Type:

Specialized Silt Trap of the Non Clogging SS 304 Food

Graded Material, V Wire Screen Filter Placed at
Horizontal Angle.
In Farmland V wire Technology, inside the silt trap
unit, sufficient volume of space is created in the form
of Reinforced concrete rings filled with filtration
media at the bottom which allows for the dirt and
debris to remain at the bottom and allow clean water
to pass through the horizontally placed V wire screen
mesh leading to the Injection well.
In FLRWH S V wire Technology the depth of Recharge
point varies from a minimum of 20 meters and may go
up to 60 meters depending on the geomorphic
characteristics of the soil profile. Because of this depth
in recharging; the water gets self purified and reduces
the salinity, hardness and fluoride contents
Whereas in FL RWHS V Wire technology; 20% of
space uses high quality filtration media at the top and
80% space is earmarked to store the runoff water.
This enables the system to hold large quantities of
runoff rainwater to be held within the system and
secondly this large volume of water column exerts an
additional water pressure discharging large amounts
of water into the deeper layers of the earth aquifer.
FLRWHS technology employs the scientifically tested
electrical conductivity test to accurately determine the
most favorable points for the quick release of
rainwater into the deeper layers of permeable strata.

In the conventional technology , the Absence of silt trap

which leads to accumulation of silt directly in the
recharging well

In the conventional method the depth of rainwater

recharge is restricted to 3 meters which may cause
adverse environmental impact in terms of water logging,
soil salinity etc.
In conventional system the recharge well consists of 80%
of filtration aggregates and 20% of volume is left for
rainwater runoff. Basically, insufficient space for
rainwater accumulation.
In the conventional method, during the rainy season the
soil particles are generally saturated with moisture right
up to their water holding capacity. Hence the saturated
water molecules enter the recharging well and flood the
system. Because of this, the system is unable to hold the
surface runoff water and discharge it to the deeper layers.
In most conventional system it is not so.

The Rain Water is led through a water channel and first reaches the silt
trap, which allows for silt to accumulate in the chamber. The overflow
water will be led into the injection well through horizontal connected
pipe with V wire Filter Unit, which passes through multi layers of
Filtration media placed at the top of the injection well. The water is
accommodated in a specially designed storage well, which creates
water column. This water column within the walls of the injection Well
develops a tremendous pressure on the water body resulting in the
downward movement of water, accordingly, injecting large quantities of
water into the deeper layers of the permeable & impervious earth's
strata through the Non Clogging V-Wire screens attached to the
specifically designed percolator pipe, placed to a deeper depth of 30
meters below the ground. The water column and the dual V-Wire
Screen allow for the water to reach the dry joints, cracks, weathered
zone, and aquifers and recharge the ground water source.

Step by step process in the installation of

FL V-wire technology

In close proximity to the existing bore well, a new bore well of diameter
225mm and 30 meters in depth is dug.(Depth varies depending on soil profile)

Inside the bore well crushed stones, 10mm in size is filled to a depth of 1.5
meters from the bottom.

The HDPE percolator pipe of 140 mm diameter is to be inserted at one

end with v wire screen and lowered inside the 225 mm dia bore .

The percolator pipe to be lowered to the depth of 28.5 mts. and remaining
part of the pipe should reach the top slightly above the ground level.

The top end of the percolator pipe should be secured with the end cap.

The area surrounding the HDPE Percolator pipe is filled with 10 MM crushed
stone right up to the top. This provides for stability as well as prevents
clogging of the pipe.

Surrounding the percolator pipe, a well to be dug 1.5 mts. dia x 5 mts. in depth.

From the end cap point of the percolator pipe, downwards to a depth of
5 meters a well of diameter 1.5 meters is dug.

1.Prefabricated concrete rings (1350MM Dia X 300MM Ht x wall thickness of 65

MM) are lowered into the well and placed one above the other to a height of 4
MTRS.
2.At this very depth of 5 meters the percolator pipe is cut leaving an protrusion of
150mm

1.One 100 MM thick extra heavy duty pre fabricated cement reinforced ring (1350
mm dia x 150 mm Height) is placed on top of the 13th ring.
2.On top of the 14th ring, another three rings rings (1350mm Dia X 300mm Ht x
wall thickness of 65 mm) are to be placed one above the other, reaching one foot
above the ground level.

The V wire screen is to be fixed to the protrusion pipe.

The bottom of the injection well is covered with 50 mm crushed stone to

a height of 100mm..

Perforated half round slabs of 1150 MM diameter, with holes of size 32

MM are placed on top of the 100 MM heavy duty ring.

On top of the perforated slab, one layer of 40 MM size crushed stone is placed

On top of the crushed stone, one layer of charcoal is placed to a depth of 50mm.

On top of the charcoal layer, another layer of activated carbon is placed to a depth of
50mm..

Above the activated carbon, a layer of 20mm crushed stone is placed to a thickness
of 100mm

Above this layer, a layer of pebbles and gravel is placed to a depth of 50mm.

The last and uppermost layer comprises of coarse sand to a depth of 100mm.

The silt trap is covered with different layers of 40 mm crushed stone, activated
carbon and charcoal and 20 mm crushed stone to a depth of 200mm and 150 mm, 3
mm slot, SS304 horizontal V Wire screen filter is mounted to a 6 inch PVC pipe to
lead the water into the recharging well.

The top of the injection well and the top of the silt trap are firmly secured with a
concrete slab to safeguard the various components of the system.

A trench is dug which facilitates the

run off water to the silt trap
The mouth of the silt trap is secured
with a mesh screen of 25 mm.
The run off water is channelized to
the silt trap inlet and the overflow
water is lead into the injection well &
the system functions in tandem,
augmenting ground water recharge.
