POVERTY & ITS SOLUTIONS

PROBLEMS OF POVERTY
1. Nearly 1/2 of the worlds population more than 3 billion people
live on less than $2.50 a day. More than 1.3 billion live in extreme
poverty, that's less than $1.25 a day.
2. 1 billion children worldwide are living in poverty. According to UNICEF,
22,000 children die each day due to poverty.
3. 870 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. Food
banks are especially important in providing food for people that cant
afford it themselves. Run a food drive outside your local grocery store
so people in your community have enough to eat.
4. More than 1 billion people lack adequate access to clean drinking
water and an estimated 400 million of these are children. Because
unclean water yields illness, roughly 443 million school days are
missed every year.
5. In 2011, 165 million children under the age 5 were stunted (reduced
rate of growth and development) due to chronic malnutrition.
6. Preventable diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia take the lives of 2
million children a year who are too poor to afford proper treatment.
7. As of 2011, 19 million children worldwide are not vaccinated.
8. 1/4 of all humans live without electricity approximately 1.6 billion
people.
9. 80% of the world population lives on less than $10 a day.
10.
In 1998, the UN estimated that it would take $40 billion annually
to offer basic education, clean water and sanitation, reproductive
health, and basic health and nutrition to every person in every
developing country. That would be about $58 billion today.

CAUSES OF POVERTY
Government Policies:
The policies of government are base on the suggestions of officials which do
not have awareness about the problems of a common man. After
implementation the policies do not get effective result. After the failure of

one policy, government does not consider its failure and announces another
policy without studying the aftermaths of last one.
Corruption:
Another cause of poverty is corruption. There are two types of corruption.
There is not morality and everyone is trying to earn more and more by using
fair and unfair means. Officials waste their time has low efficiency. One has
to pay a heavy cost to get his right. Law and order conditions are out of
control and institutions are failed to provide justice to a common man. Justice
can be bought by money only.
Lack of Education:
Lack of education relies to not learning the necessary skills to succeed in a
career field for example if someone goes to driving school he has received
education therefore he can drive trucks so he will not be in poverty. However
as the demand for more intelligent people grow because we are in the
information age. So does the need for higher degrees to show these
qualifications that you are intelligent... thus without education the only jobs
you can usually get is jobs at mc Donald s or other similar jobs...
although some jobs are high paying without a college degree :)
Large Scale Import:
Big revenue is consumed in importing good every year, even raw material
has to import for industry. If we decrease import and establish own supply
chains from our country natural resources the people will have better
opportunities to earn.
Law and Order:
There are lot of problems regarding law and order. Terrorist attacks create
uncertainty in stock markets and people earning from stock are getting loss
due to which the whole country faces uncertain increase in commodity
prices.
Fluctuated Foreign investment:
Foreign investor comes to local markets. They invest millions of dollars in
stock markets and stock market gets rise in index. Then the investor
withdraws his money with profit and market suddenly collapses. The after
math always be faced by poor people.
Privatization:
Government is unable to manage the departments and country has low
reserve assets. So the meet the requirements some companies run by
government are sold to foreign investors. The commodities or services
provided by the companies are becoming costly. For example if government
sold a gas plant then prices for gas in country rises.
Moral Culture:
The main reason for poverty is the social dishonesty and irresponsible
behavior of people. Everyone is trying to get rich by using unfair means. A
shop keeper is ready to get whole money from the pocket of customer.
People doing jobs are not performing their duties well. In society the man
considered brave or respectful who do not pay taxes or continuously violate
the laws. This irresponsible behavior continuously increases and produces
loss for county.

SOLUTION OF POVERTY
From childhood we are being taught by our parents to do charity,
in schools we learn the same from our teachers. Every religion
tells its followers to do and make charity and look after the poor
and needy in our society. So, morally we all know the importance
and need for charity and that we have to help the poor and needy
ones. But, what we lack is an everlasting system for charity. We
really need a complete system which works on a regular basis
throughout the World and should have certain laws to which
everyone should abide strictly in order to make this system work
and help effectively in complete eradication of Poverty from our
World.
Its out of our human mind and control to design and then fully
implement something like that in the society with complete effect.
And only our Creator, i.e. The Almighty, One GOD, who knows
everything inside and out, who knows our wills and desires, we
don't know what is good or bad for us but only HE knows. And so,
HE did make & designed a System. Now, its on us how we have
faith in it and how sincere we are to obey and implement it. And
not only on an individual basis but we should see that our nears &
dears are doing the same too. If not then we have to guide them.
Zakat is one of the 5 Pillars of Islam which every Muslim has to
follow as an Obligation. The 5 Pillars of Islam are:

Shahadah - Confession of a Muslim. None has the right to be

worshipped but ALLAH and Muhammad peace be upon him is the
Messenger of ALLAH.

Salat - 5 times prayer during fix times in a day.

Zakat- The Poor due or obligatory charity

Saum- Fasting during the month of Ramadan

Hajj- The Pilgrimage to Makkah

Now two of the above mentioned Pillars of Islam i.e. Zaka't
(Charity) & Hajj (Pilgrimage) depend on a person's financial

position but the rest are an obligation for every Muslims

regardless of their financial position.
A Muslim pays Zaka't to the poor and others in need. It amounts
to 2.5% of ones excess wealth that has accumulated for a year.
Zak'at helps to establish economic balance and social justice in
the society, and promotes goodwill & bridges the gap between
the rich and the poor.
Zak'at is due on all types of properties to be given out to the poor
Muslims as stated in the following verses of The Glorious QUR'AN
"As-Sadaqat (means Zaka't expenditures) are only for Fuqara
(poor) and Al-Masakin (the needy) and for those employed to
collect (the funds) and for bringing hearts together for Islam and
for freeing captives (or slaves) and for those in debt and for the
cause of Allah and for the stranded traveler - an obligation
imposed by Allah . And Allah is Knowing and Wise." 9:60
Zaka't purifies the donor from stinginess, miserliness, and greed.
It also signifies the social welfare system that fosters brotherly
love, friendship and cooperation among Muslims. It further
bridges the gap between the rich and the poor on a basis of
mercy and kindness. Moreover, ALLAH rewards it generously.
Zaka't is due on the properties of all Muslims, be they old or
young, male or female. It is due on the following properties:

Gold, Silver & Money

Livestock

Produce

Commercial commodities and stocks

Treasures and mines

If a person dies before paying the Zaka't due on his or her

property, then it must be taken from the estate of the deceased
before its division among the heirs. ALLAH the Almighty has
mentioned in The Glorious QUR'AN about severe torment for
those who withhold Zaka't "And let not those who greedily withhold what Allah has given
them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it
is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they
withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the
heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, with what you
do, is fully Acquainted." 3:180
