The Bakunawa, also spelled Bakonawa, Baconaua, or Bakonaua, is a dragon
in Philippine mythology that is depicted as a giant sea serpent with mouth size of a
lake which is believed to be the cause of eclipses.
They have a red tongue, whiskers, gills, small wires at its sides, and two sets
of wings, one is large and ash-gray while the other is small and is found further
down its body.
The

Visayan

term bakunawa is

directly

translated

to

the

word eclipse. Binakunawa is a verb to mean "to cause an eclipse".

During ancient times, Filipinos believe that there are seven moons created by
Bathala and the Bakunawa is fond of those and it rises from the ocean and swallows
it. To cast away the Bakunawa from eating all the moons, ancient Filipinos would
bang their pots and pans and some enthrall the monster by playing soothing sounds
of musical instruments hoping that it will fall asleep.
Others tell how the Bakunawa fell in love with a human girl in one of the
native tribes. The tribe leader discovered their affair and put their houses in to
ashes. The Bakunawa found out and devoured the seven moons in fury. When the

fiend was about to eat the last moon, Bathala punished the monster by banishing it
from its home away from sea.
