The Pastor and the Gospel:

Wielding the Power of the

Gospel for Sanctification

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing

salvation for all people, training us to renounce
ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live
self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the
present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the
appearing of the glory of our great God and
Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to
redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for
Himself a people for His own possession who are
zealous for good works. TITUS 2:11-14 (ESV)

SANCTIFICATION is the work of the

Holy Spirit in us whereby our inner
being is progressively changed,
freeing us more and more from
sinful traits and developing within
us over time the virtues of Christlike character.

The grace of God is the

foundation for our sanctification.
The gospel of God is the
foundation for godly living.

1. The Gospel trains us how we

should live (2:11)
A. Gods grace has come to us
Grace is one word summary of Gods saving
act in Christ, given freely to sinners who
believe. (Mounce, Pastoral Epistles)
His gracious gift of salvation has appeared
for all.

1. The Gospel trains us how we

should live (2:12)
B. Gods grace must change us
Training us to renounce ungodliness and
worldly passions (cf Romans 6:12-14)
Training us to live self-controlled, upright,
and godly lives (cf Colossians 3:12-14)

2. The Gospel directs us where

we should look (2:13)
A. We know what to look for:
His coming
B. We know whom to look for: our Savior

The more aware you are of

Gods grace and acceptance
in Christ, the more able you
are to drop your denials and
self-defenses and admit the
true dimensions of sin.

A SCANDALOUS LOVE

3. The Gospel teaches us who

is Lord (2:14)
A. Jesus paid for us: gave Himself for us
B. Jesus purifies us: to purify

C. Jesus possesses us: For Himself a

people for His own possession

D. Jesus prepares us: who are zealous to

do good works

Pauls prescription is not to try harder

at being better. He wants us to believe
the gospel more deeply.
If we will focus on the roots of the
gospel, we will produce the fruits of
godliness. (ESV Gospel Transformation Bible)
