4. [20%] A SDOF mass-spring-damper system of mass 300 kg, spring constant k = 30,000 Nlm, and
damping coefficient e = 900 kgls, is fastened on a moving ground. The ground motion is described by a
cosine function. It is found that the vibration of the system can reach 10 mm at resonance. (a) Find the
amplitude of the ground motion. (b) Find the force transmitted to the mass at resonance.
5. [20] Consider the rotating unbalance of a motor of mass M= 30 kg. The system is supported by a
spring of spring constant k = 2400 Nlm and a damper. A vibration amplitude of 5 em was recorded
when the motor run at a constant speed of 20 rpm. An amplitude of 86.3 em was recorded when the
motor run at a much higher speed that is at least 100 times greater than 20 rpm. Find the damping ratio.
6. [15] No numerical calculation is needed for the following questions (next page). But you need to
provide sufficient reasons using results in Chapters 1 and 2 of the text to justify your answers. No
credit will be given without explanations.
