Debates are sponsored and run

the Presidential debates are

Who Schedules Them?
The commission makes the

What Do MacDonalds and the

Imagine going in to MacDonalds. You ask the

Do you think he should be fired?
Imagine going into the Senate. You ask for a

Pathological Liar
At the end of June, Politifact released its midyear analysis of statements by the candidates
for president. It found that 78% of Himselfs
statements in 2016 are false-to-pants-on-fire.

And now a word from the GOP.

See, you dont have to be a big, (allegedly)

successful casino guy like Himself to know simple
odds. If you can walk up to a table or a track rail
and have clear 4-to-1 odds on a bet, take the bet.
And, so far, betting on ANYTHING coming out of
Himselfs mouth being an out and out LIE is running
4-to 1. Youd be a sucker to bet any other horse.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Judicial Merit Retention
Elections
http://www.floridabar.org/thevotesinyourcourt

1. Why am I being asked to vote on judges?

Florida law requires Florida Supreme Court
justices and appeals court judges to be placed
on the ballot in nonpartisan elections every
six years so voters can determine whether
the judges or justices should remain on their
courts for another six-year term. These are
called merit retention elections. About
one-third of our 61 appeals court judges
will be on the ballot; there are no Supreme
Court justices on the ballot this year. The
appearance of a judge or justice on the ballot
does not indicate anything about his or her
performance or actions as a judge.

Page 4

2. What do Yes and No votes mean?

A Yes vote means you want the judge or
justice to remain on the court for another sixyear term. A No vote means you want the
judge or justice to be removed from the court.
The majority of voters decides whether the
judge or justice remains on the court.
3. Do appeals court judges and Supreme
Court justices have opponents in merit
retention elections?
No. Your vote determines whether each judge
or justice should remain on the court. They are
not running against opponents or each other.
Merit retention elections are nonpartisan. In
nonpartisan elections, candidates appear on
the ballot without reference to any political
party, (e.g. Democrat or Republican).
Florida law requires judicial elections to be
nonpartisan in order to preserve impartiality.
4. How do appeals court judges and
Supreme Court justices get on the court?
The governor appoints judges or justices
from lists submitted by Judicial Nominating
Commissions, which screen candidates and
make recommendations based on the merits
of applicants. Newly appointed judges go on
the ballot for the first time within two years
after appointment. If the voters retain them,
they then go on the ballot again every six
years.
5. Which courts are subject to merit
retention elections?
The Florida Supreme Court and the five
District Courts of Appeal are subject to merit
retention elections.

[HOW TO SPOT A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR,

continued from page 2]

How to Spot a
Pathological Liar
Three Methods:

1. Monitoring Someone's Behavior

2. Observing Body Language
3. Assessing the Person's Risk Factors
A pathological liar is someone who
compulsively tells lies or fabricates
information. A pathological liar may not be
completely rooted in reality, believing the
lies they tell, often in an effort to remedy
low self esteem. To spot a pathological liar,
pay attention to behavior. A person may
tell lies that seem to provide them with
attention or personal gain. You may also
spot frequent inconsistencies in stories.
While pathological liars generally give less
physical cues when lying, certain subtle
changes in body language may indicate a
pathological liar. A pathological liar may,
for example, make excessive eye contact.
Look into someone's history. Problems
like substance abuse, and a history of
unstable relationships, are all indications
someone may be a pathological liar.

Method 1

Monitoring Someone's Behavior

1.

Consider the nature of suspected lies. You

may come to suspect a friend, family member,
or co-worker is habitually stretching the truth.
Pick apart the suspected lies and consider what
they have in common. Pathological liars may
lie to gain sympathy, boredom, or insecurity.
Some pathological liars may be actively trying to
gain sympathy in a situation. They may tend to
exaggerate or make up pains and illnesses, for
example, or exaggerate small issues in their lives.
Pathological liars may also have low selfesteem. They may lie to make themselves

Page 7

Some pathological liars simply lie out

of boredom. They will fabricate events
and make up lies to hurt others. This
creates drama, alleviating boredom in the
pathological liar's life.

2.

Listen for other people's stories being

retold. Pathological liars may often get caught
lying. Frequently, you may hear someone else's
story retold as if it happened to a pathological
liar. If something about a story sounds familiar to
you, stop to consider whether you've heard that
story before.
You may hear a pathological liar repeat the
story of a friend or family member. They may
also repeat stories from movies or television
shows. The stories may be embellished
slightly in the pathological liar's version.
For example, your co-worker tells a story
that sounds familiar to you, but you're
unsure where you've heard it before. Later,
you see a similar story on the news. If your
co-worker is a pathological liar, they may
very well have lifted the story from the news
and presented it as their own.

3.

Observe whether the person dodges

questions. When confronted, a pathological liar
may find a way to avoid answering a question.
Pathological liars are manipulative by nature, so
you may think they've answered something when
they really have failed to do so.
For example, your friend reveals she had
a falling out with her best friend fairly
recently. You've been having issues getting
along with this friend, and wonder whether
her relationship difficulties may be a pattern
for her. You ask her something like, "Why
did you and Eliza stop talking?"

October 5, 2016

The Enlightened Voter

[METHOD 1 continued from page 6]

The friend may respond with something

like, "We haven't really talked for a year."
She's not really answering the question.
She may dodge more direct questions. For
example, you ask her something like, "Did
you used to blow off Eliza the way you blow
me off a lot?" She may reply with something
like, "Do you really think I'm that kind of
person?"

4.

Watch out for manipulation. Pathological

liars are experts at manipulating others. They
tend to study others to find ways to divert their
attention away from their lies. Pay attention to
how a pathological liar interacts with you. You
may detect subtle manipulation.
Pathological
liars
frequently
use
sexual tension as a means of emotional
manipulation. If you're attracted to the
suspected pathological liar, they may flirt
with you when confronted about their lies.
They will also study you carefully and learn
where your personal limits are. Pathological
liars have a good sense of which people
will believe which lies. They may realize,
for example, you will not believe lies
about sickness, but may believe lies about
emotional problems. If you hear the liar
talking to someone else, they may fabricate
claims of aches and pains but not mention
these ailments to you.

Employment Data:
Democratic Administrations vs.
Republican Administrations
Prof. Robert S. McElvaine of Milisaps College
examined employment data for the 64 years from
the beginning of Harry Trumans presidency to the
end of George W. Bushs. He found that an average
of two million jobs were created per year when a
Democrat was president, compared with one million
annually when a Republican was president. ###

Page 8

5.

See how a person reacts when caught lying.

No two pathological liars are the same. However,
most of them will react aggressively when caught
in a lie. If someone seems to get angry in response
to accusations of lying, you may be dealing with a
pathological liar.
A pathological liar may become very
defensive. They may blame someone else
for their lies. For example, "The only reason
I had to make that up was because our boss
is so difficult."
They may also come up with another lie to
cover up the first one. For example, "No, I
did use that money to get the car fixed, but I
also used half of it to pay for those groceries.
I forgot to tell you I stopped at the store."
They also may become angry when caught
lying. They may become angry and begin
yelling, or start crying in order to elicit
sympathy.

Method 2:

Observing Body Language

1.

Pay attention to eye contact. Many people

assume pathological liars refrain from making eye
contact. While typical liars may dodge eye contact,
this is not usually the case for a pathological liar.
Instead, you may notice too much eye contact.
This is the pathological liar's attempt to look
believable.
A pathological liar may not break their
gaze when speaking to you. It's normal to
look away on occasion in conversation. A
pathological liar, however, will stare you in
the eyes for as long as you talk.
You also may notice subtle signs of lying in
the eyes. A pathological liar's pupils may
dilate slightly, and they may also blink
slowly.

2.

Notice if someone seems too relaxed. When

normal people lie, they may fidget excessively and
show other signs of nervousness. In contrast, a
pathological liar feels little remorse over lying.
Therefore, they may seem almost too relaxed
when lying. Pathological liars may actually appear
quite sociable and laid back. Even when you know
someone is lying, they may not demonstrate
typical signs of distress or nervousness.

Page 9

eyes typically crinkle. With a fake smile, the only

noticable change is near the mouth.

Method 3

Assessing the Person's Risk Factors

1.

Look for underlying secret habits. If this

person has a problem with substance abuse,
gambling, binge eating, or other destructive
behaviors, there's a good chance they're a
pathological liar.

For example, you hear your co-worker tell a

story at lunch. Later, during downtime, the
suspected pathological liar repeats the same
story, as if it happened to them.

For example, you may notice a co-worker

drinking extra at a company party. You
may see them filling up their drink when no
one else is at the bar, or even notice them
carrying a flask.

While you know this person is lying, they

seem completely unbothered. They tell
the story without any signs of distress or
agitation and seem at ease with themselves.
If you didn't know better, you would have
no trouble believing the story.

You may also notice you don't see one coworker eat at lunch, but sometimes find
evidence of food having been in their office.
They may be very secretive about eating
habits, and habitually turn down offers to
get food with co-workers.

3.

Pay attention to the tone of voice. Small

changes in vocal tone may indicate lying. While
not all pathological liars change their tone, some
may. A shift in vocal tone, in conjunction with
other symptoms, may indicate someone is a
pathological liar.
You may notice a slight change in pitch. A
pathological liar's voice may get higher or
lower when lying.
A pathological liar may also lick their lips or
drink water when talking. The stress from
telling lies may cause adrenaline or the
constriction of vocal chords, leading to an
increased need for water.

4.

Observe someone's smile. While pathological

liars may not demonstrate typical body language
when lying, they may display a fake smile. Smiles are
very difficult to fake successfully, so pay attention to
their mouths. With a genuine smile, you will notice
changes in the entire face. The corners of someone's

2.

Consider whether the person lives in reality.

Pathological liars are often disconnected with
reality. A lot of times, they may believe parts of
their lies themselves. They may be deluded about
themselves and their abilities.
A pathological liar may have a tendency to
exaggerate their importance. They may see
something innocuous, like a compliment
from a boss, as a sign of personal greatness.
When recounting the compliment, they may
fluff it's importance.
A pathological liar may lack basic life skills,
but may not see this as a problem.

3.

Think about the person's relationships with

others. Pathological liars tend to have unstable
relationships. Consider anything you know about
this person's relationship history. Look for any
warning signs of instability.
Does this person have stable friendships or
romantic relationships? A lack of longterm

friends, and a series of failed romances, may

indicate a pathological liar.
A pathological liar may also be estranged
from their family.

4.

Study the person's career. A pathological

liar tends to bluff their way into jobs. A
pathological liar may have many jobs on their
resume. However, most of these jobs will be short
term. They may also dodge questions about why
certain jobs did not work out longterm.
For example, a pathological liar may have a
long resume. Most of the jobs will only have
been short term. If you ask the pathological
liar about their career, they may dodge
questions.
In some cases, a pathological liar may have
moved around a lot due to sudden career
changes. Pathological liars often burn
bridges with employers.
###

Republicans Treat
Economics With Faith
Republicans treat economics with faith
Their faith tells them if you cut taxes on the very
rich and destroy government, enough jobs trickle
down to pull the country out of our Depression,
to pay for our military adventures -- even though
there is no proof that method works.
Democrats treat economics with science
On the other hand, Democrats treat economics
with science and experience: science tells them
that in the past 12 years, drastically cutting taxes
on the super rich has resulted in an economic
and housing disaster. Paying for our military
with a Chinese credit card has contributed to our
current Depression. Science tells Democrats that
in the Great Depression, jobs were created by the
government and when the bottom rungs of our
society were employed, need for goods trickled
up, thus creating employment for the ultra-rich.

Page 10

Psycho-talk
Faith informs Republicans that Social Security
and Medicare are in terrible danger, while
science tells Democrats that is a lot of psychotalk not based on fact. Republicans faith tells
them that they must force Social Security into the
stock market, while science informs Democrats
that solution would obviously court disaster
as happened in our recent crash, where everyone
who had 401K accounts in the market lost their
life savings. Faith informs Republicans that it is
vital to cut Medicare benefits and increase the
age of entry, while science informs Democrats
that is unnecessary and a punishment to those
who can afford least to have their benefits cut.
Worthless Americans
Faith informs Republicans that 98% of
Americans are not worthy of consideration. Faith
informs Republicans that only their buddies in
the top 2% of wealth are worthy of consideration.
Science informs Democrats that if Republicans
are allowed to vote their faith, most seniors will
be forced to live in poverty, most Americans will
not have affordable healthcare, most Americans
will have a shorter lifespan than the 2% of their
Republican golfing buddies.
So, what shall we vote for faith or science.
If we vote for faith, the ministers of faith have
promised to tear down everything the scientists
have created in the past 8 years; tear down
advances in health care, tear down advances
in infrastructure, spend an inordinate amount
of time on investigating their silly faith-based
hallucinations, such as the scientific facts of the
Presidents birthplace, the Presidents religion,
the Presidents patriotism, rather than spending
their time on creating jobs for the scientific fact
that 25% of us are unemployed or underemployed.
Tear down Americas democracy and replace it
with an oligarchy (of the rich, by the rich, and
for the rich). I dont know about you, but I dont
want to live in an oligarchy. Im going to vote
down the line for Democratic candidates on
November 8th!

More pointedly, and unfortunately for Trump, business executives have only a mediocre record when
transferring their skills to government. In the last great economic mess, this country was led by a Republican
who had been stunningly successful in business: Herbert Hoover. Hmm. More recently, President George
W. Bush staffed his cabinet with C.E.O.s who had been stellar in the private sector and that didnt work
out so well either. ###
