REACTION PAPER

Nowadays, watching television is one of the most used hobbies of

many. This serves as their stress reliever, way of spending time with their
family and even a helpful factor to ease emotional distress. In this era, which
is the millennial generation, television programs are considered as the most
influential factor to its audience; the viewers, considering that the numbers
of children ranging with the age of 3-10 got the highest percentage. We all
know that many programs involve a substantial amount of violence in which
affects people that forms the wrong concept of violence in todays youth.
Some are saying that television disturbs the minds of adolescent children
who cannot yet comprehend the truth of fiction and reality. Giving the fact
that the adults can determine right from wrong than the children, children
are more affected because they are considered as the preys in terms of
media violence.
According to the Institute for the Social Research, an aggressive
behavior is a learned behavior which is being taught to our children by the
media violence that they are exposed to daily (Chen, 1994 p.23). In
Aggression A Social Learning Analysis, written by Albert Bandura, indicates
that sometimes watching a single violent program can increase
aggressiveness. Children who watch television depicting violence as realistic,
unpunished, and frequently repeated are more likely to imitate what they see
(Bandura) Extensive viewing of television violence by children causes greater
aggressiveness. Children with emotional, behavioral, learning or impulse
control problems may be more easily influenced by TV violence.
The most important aspect of violence in television is preventing it.
There are many ways in which it can be prevented, but not often are many
carried out. The amount of time children watch TV, regardless of content,
should be moderated because it decreases time spent on more beneficial
activities such as reading, playing with friends, and developing hobbies. To
prevent the increasing numbers of this issue, parents have a big part.
Children are said to be the hope of ones nation. Children should be nurtured
and mold properly by the parents or the responsible adults. Education should
start at home with the help of their parents, they would be the role models of
their children; considering that children are great imitator which can be a big
help to the prevention of television program violence. There should be a
proper guidance from the parents, most especially in choosing the programs
to watch in television. This issue will never last forever but by the help of
each other, the world would become better. Having the line of Dr. Jose P.

through the power of the future generation.
