Segment I
Section A: Overview
Nichols College is an environmentally conscious campus, they have taken green
initiatives in residence halls, academic buildings, and even the dining hall. One area that needs
significant improvement is the recycling system. In each residence hall, there are trash rooms
with both garbage cans and recycling cans. A significant amount of students have shown a
blatant disregard for the barrels, and end up just throwing all of their garbage into what ever can
was more convenient. When students neglect to recycle their cans and bottles, they are in turn
costing Nichols College a tremendous amount of money.
How can this issue be solved, Nichols for Cans. The overall goal of this project is to
insert recycling machines into all of the residence halls, to increase the level of recycling as a
whole. By adding can return machines into each residence building, students will be offered
incentives for recycling. When a can and/or bottle is inserted into the machine the students will
then be able to swipe their Student ID, and refunds from their coin return will be added to their
Bison Bucks account.
When these machines are added to residence halls, it will not only be benefiting the
students, but the community as a whole. The cost of trash removal on the Nichols College
Campus is unbelievably high, and a major factor in this price is derived from the fact that
students are not recycling correctly. Nichols for Cans will encourage and enable students to
conveniently recycle their bottles and cans, which will in turn make facilities job easier.

Management Madness

Section B.1
In almost every occupation, employees should be aware of the environmental changes
that may occur. In our society, environmental issues are of significant concern; some of which
include overpopulation, global warming and climate change. Employees and companies as a
whole should be responsive to the changes. Nichols for Cans will help impact the environment
by improving the recycling habits around the Nichols College campus. Nichols College, is taking
initiatives to become a green environment. Nichols for Cans is a recycling method that is
aiming to incorporate a new way incentivize and encourage the community to help with the
initiative to make Nichols College even more environmentally friendly.
Going green has become a huge push all over the country, especially on college
campuses. Campuses are known to accumulate a substantial amount of waste. Some reasons why
colleges would want to convert to environmentally friendly methods is to achieve awards and
money. One of the awards, is called the The Princeton Review. In order to achieve this award,
schools have to meet three key factors: students must have a quality of life on campus that is
both healthy and sustainable, schools must prepare students for employment in an increasingly
green economy, and maintain environmentally responsible school policies (Princeton). In
addition to awards, schools can also earn compensation. One form of compensation is Recycle
Mania Tournament, which is over an eight-week period over the spring. Each week, the school
reports how much recycling and trash they accumulate throughout the duration of the week, and
separate it into several categories. The founders of this contest believe that if students see that
other schools have better recycling practices than that of their on college, it will incentivize the
students and campus as a whole to step up their recycling methods to beat the others schools.
This method is a friendly competition that helps the environment out too.

Management Madness

The government is pressuring schools to go green, and implement changes. The

government wants schools to build and maintain healthy facilities that are both green and
environmentally friendly, but with this, comes increased costs. To compensate these increased
costs, the government has began giving them grants. These green grants are designed to
promote environmental improvements or education (Vitt Sale). In order to obtain these grants,
schools must come up with a proposal which clearly states their green initiatives. Colleges can
also receive donations from people including alumni or private companies to help out with the
transformation to a greener and cleaner environment.
College campuses around the country are increasing their environmental standards and
reducing their overall footprint. The various schools partaking in this green movement are doing
so by adding intensified recycling systems or making their buildings developing methods to
reduce the overall footprints of the buildings. Some students factor in environmental awareness
to their overall decision process, implementing the Nichols for Cans recycling centers could
potentially be an incentive for students to choose Nichols College.

Management Madness

Section B.2
As stated in the description of the proposal, Nichols can make a great change in the way
the students recycle their cans and bottles by adding a recycling center in the residence halls.
This will not only benefit the students by receiving cash, but this can also save the school money.
(FIND COMPANY) has been the waste cleaning company for Nichols for over (FIND YEAR)
years. When the (COMPANY) cleaning system picks up the trash, Nichols is charged by the
(FIND RATE) rate. (IS IT A YEAR CONTRACT) This system will help minimize the trash load,
saving money for the weight of the trash bags.
There are about 1,200 students enrolled in Nichols college. If we say approximately each
student consumes about 5 cans or bottles a day, that is 35 cans or bottles per week, per person.
Now, times that 35 cans or bottle per student by the number of students or 1,200, you will get
about 42,000 of bottles or cans per week. Now, that is a lot of waste that is not being recycled!
Which is not even including the amount of waste that facilities forget to recycle. These bad
habits that need to be broken is what is completely destroying our environment.
With that being said, the college should be able to get money back due to the rebates. "A
rebate is an amount paid by way of reduction, return, or refund on what has already been paid or
contributed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebate_(marketing)
(Now, this trash will not hit a landfill, it will already be separated and go straight to a
recycling center)

Section C
Stakeholder Analysis
Stakeholders are people with an interest or concern in something, especially in business
(Dictionary). Potential stakeholders for Nichols for Cans who are likely to favor the proposal
are those who will benefit from the change. The leading stakeholders for "Nichols for Cans" is
the Nichols College community as a whole, this includes students, facilities, and Eagle Cleaning.
Students are an essential stakeholder in Nichols for Cans, it will make it more
convenient to recycle their cans and bottles for cash in return. The cash can be used for personal
use or transitioned into Bison bucks. By implementing this change, Nichols for Cans will be
essentially eliminating the hassle of students finding a way to a local grocery store to recycle
their cans. Not every student on campus has access to a vehicle or the motivation to recycle their
cans and bottles after being consumed. The addition of the recycling centers, will be accessible
for everyone to use and the make overall process significantly easier.
Another important stakeholder for Nichols for Cans is the facilities. For this project to be
successful, it is essential for everyone to contribute. Students, Facilities, and Eagle Cleaning
would have to come together to raise the communities overall environmental standards. Robert
Lavigne works for Facilities Management, he will serve as a great resource throughout this
project. Through meetings, we were able to meet and gather his thoughts and ideas in regards to
this project. (Insert interview questions and answers)
Of course, the environment and the Nichols community in general will be a significant
stakeholder in this project. Nichols for Cans main concern is to benefit the environment and
change the way the Nichols community is living and recycling. There are many reasons why we

Management Madness

need to learn to recycle our trash better, such as pollution, landfills, and natural habits. "Landfills
are were your trash and debris goes. By throwing everything away and not reusing or recycling
them will cause the landfill to fill up. They start to smell horrible and end up being toxic from all
the harmful chemicals coming from Styrofoam, batteries, microwaves, cleaning supplies, and
other household products." (WEBSITE)
Eagle cleaning is Nichols College waste cleaning system that will most likely have a
great interest in Nichols for Cans. This will not only benefit the environment around them, but
it will also change the way these employees remove the trash and recycling from the Trash rooms
in the residence halls. Nichols for Cans will eliminate that process of the trash for the
Residence Halls from having it moved to be separated.

Management Madness 10

Section D
Years ago, Nichols decided to implement a change; they anticipated this change would
make the recycling process as a whole, much more easy and efficient; they switched to single
stream recycling. Nichols thought through introducing students to this convenient and mindless
way to recycle, they wouldnt have any trouble adapting to the changes. Unfortunately, not all
students, but some have shown a blatant disregard for this single stream recycling system. Single
stream recycling is almost as easy and convenient as throwing everything into one garbage
container. The guidelines for single stream recycling are as follows: do not squish or flatten
containers, empty and rinse containers, and no shredded paper or Styrofoam. The following
items are single stream recycling friendly: paper, plastics, cardboards, jugs, commingled
containers (with no caps) and plastic cups with no lids, etc.
Why students in the Nichols College residence halls were unable to adapt to the new
recycling system remains a mystery, but Nichols for Cans is the solution. The Management
Madness Team has decided to implement a change that benefits not only the environment, but
the Nichols Community as a whole. Nichols for Cans is a first order change, because it is a
modification to the recent changes of the single stream recycling problem. We have simply made
an extension off of an already existing plan. The overall idea of single stream recycling will
remain the same, but now students will be incentivized to recycle. Ideally in this first order
change, the single stream recycling process will only be improved.
When students are lazy in their recycling process in the Residence Halls, there is a
significant impact, that gravely affects the facilities team. The implementation of the first order
change, Nichols for Cans, will save facilities money in numerous ways. Adding the Recycling
Centers will reduce the over all cost of trash removal, because cans and bottles will be presorted

Management Madness 11

and free of cross contamination. The addition of the Recycling Centers will also reduce the
expenses of Eagle Cleaning as well, because they would not have to collect as many barrels.
For students, the implementation of the Nichols for Cans Machines, the incentive is the
first order change. The students will now gain two things out of the everyday chore of recycling;
if and when they use the machines, they will be making a positive impact on the environment,
which is in turn helping themselves; in addition to a greener and cleaner environment, they are
having funds added to their Bison Bucks account for practicing strong recycling skills.
Another group of community members that is impacted by this first order change is Eagle
Cleaning. Eagle Cleaning company is responsible to remove all of the waste from the trash
rooms in the residence halls. If students are not proactive in their recycling process, the single
stream recycling bins become cross contaminated. In turn, Eagle Cleaning will remove the trash
as a whole and combine the waist bins with the recycling bins. When the waste is combined, it
substantially increases the overhead cost for trash removal. This first order change will be
making Eagle Cleanings job easier as well.
Facilities will also undergo a change as a result of this First Order Change and
implementation of the recycling centers Nichols for Cans. As mentioned before, the current
cost of trash removal is exceptionally high because of the combination of waste. The addition of
the recycling centers will significantly reduce the overall cost of waste removal.
All in all, the implementation of this first order change, Nichols for Cans would
improve a process that is already in place. This recycling center is taking our single stream
recycling process to the next level. All of the stakeholders will endure positive benefits from this
first order change as well.
