Last Date 24th November 2014, Monday

Late entries after the date will not be accepted and marked)

1. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side of the plate is
60 cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The upper plate, which moves at 2.5 m/s
requires a force of 98.1 N to maintain this speed. Determine:
a. The dynamic viscosity of the oil in poise, and
b. The kinematic viscosity of the oil in stokes if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95.
2. Two plates are placed at a distance of 0.15 mm apart. The lower plate is fixed while the
upper plate having surface area 1.0 m2 is pulled at 0.3 m/s. Find the force and power
required to maintain this speed, if the fluid separating them is having viscosity 1.5 poise.
3. What are the gauge pressure and absolute pressure at a point 4 m below the free surface of
a liquid of specific gravity 1.53, if the atmospheric pressure is equivalent to 750 mm of
mercury.
4. In the given figure, an inverted manometer is connected to two pipes A and B containing
water. The fluid in manometer is oil of sp. gr. 0.8. Find the difference of pressure head
between A and B.

(Turn Over)
5. A 30 cm diameter pipe carries oil of sp. gr. 0.8 at a velocity of 2 m/s. At another section
the diameter is 20 cm. Find the velocity at this section and also mass rate of flow of oil.

6. A fluid flow is given by: V =

} .

Prove that it is a case of possible steady incompressible fluid flow.

7. A pipe (1) 450 mm in diameter branches into two pipes (2) and (3) of diameters 300 mm
and 200 mm respectively as shown in figure. If the average velocity in 450 mm diameter
pipe is 3 m/s, find: (i) discharge through 450 mm dia pipe and (ii) velocity in 200 mm
diameter pipe if the average velocity in 300 mm pipe is 2.5 m/s.

8. A pipe through which water is flowing is having diameters 40 cm and 20 cm at the crosssections 1 and 2 respectively. The velocity of water at section 1 is given 5 m/s. Find the
velocity head at the sections 1 and 2 and also rate of discharge.
9. A horizontal venturimeter with inlet diameter 30 cm and throat diameter 15 cm is used to
measure the flow of oil of sp. gr. 0.8. The discharge of oil through Venturimeter is 50
litres/s, find the reading of the oil-mercury differential manometer. Take Cd = 0.98.
10. A submarine moves horizontally in sea and has its axis 20 m below the surface of water. A
pitot-static tube placed in front of submarine and along its axis, is connected to the two
limbs of a U-tube containing mercury. The difference of mercury level is found to be 20
cm. Find the speed of submarine. Take sp. gr. of mercury 13.6 and of sea water 1.026.
11. There is a horizontal crack 50 mm wide and 3 mm deep in a wall of thickness 150 mm.
Water leaks through the crack. Find the rate of leakage through the crack if the difference
of pressure between the two ends of the crack is 245.25 N/m2. Take the viscosity of water
as 0.01 poise.
12. Water is flowing though a pipe of diameter 200 mm with a velocity of 3 m/s. Find the
head lost due to friction for a length of 5 m if the coefficient of friction is given by

; where Re is Reynold number. The kinematic viscosity of water = 0.01

stoke.
