DUTY IN HER OWN RIGHT

Shari Gamradt serves nation as daughter, wife and mother to military men

While she may not have
endured the strenuous
weeks of basic training,
the months and years
uprooted in deployment
overseas or the pangs
of the battlefield, Shari
Gamradt has served her
nation.
She is the daughter of
Lief Nelson, wife to Gary
Gamradt and mother to
Terry all men who have
served the United States
Armed Forces. The heartache, joy and triumph of
their service have molded
her life.
A daughter
Shari was born in
Houston, Texas to Lief

was a member of the U.S.
Navy Seabees (1943-45)
and was on Okinawa during the Easter Sunday
Japanese attack during
World War II. He then
was called back into the
service, joining the Air
Force as a baker during
the Korean War in 1951.

Delaware and England.

Terry, Renee and Amber
were blessed to have a
dad who never served in
a wartime mission and
whose training in Germany, Norway and Greece
only lasted for a few
weeks at a time.
They were used to
having Gary gone for
schools, training or on
state missions, Shari
said. There were disappointments when they
couldnt do something,
but overall, it was pretty
easy for them.
The stints at training were
not as easy for Shari.
Raising the children
was hard, she said. It
made me appreciate what
my mom went through.
You have to make all
the decisions, even the
simple ones. You have to
take over things that you
wouldnt otherwise do.

Having grown up
with a veteran grandfather and a father in the

service, Terry became

a member of the same
guard unit as his dad. He
conducted split training
half spent at Fort Benning in Georgia after his
junior year and the other
after his 1993 high school
graduation.
Terrys decision was
not any easy one for Shari
to accept.
At first I didnt want
him to, she said. My
dad was and now my husband is and I just thought,
thats enough. It was hard
because growing up for
me, I knew what the possibilities were.
Terry served for 10
years and spent time
away from home every
month for training and
every summer for camp,

being called to duty for
state missions and was
in Greece for training as
well. He and his dad retired from the guards in
2003. And one year later,
the unit was deployed for
Bosnia.
Its an honor know-

ing that your family is

serving the country,
Shari said. I am fortunate that Gary and Terry
were never in a war zone.
But, if they had been
asked, they would have
gone. And, gone willingly and that makes me
proud.
The weeks away
from home in training
and during state missions
could have been just as
dangerous and deadly for
Gary and Terry as any
war zone deployment.
I was always just
grateful that they came
home alive, Shari said.
The years spent accompanying the military
men in her life have been
a source of great pride for
Shari.
Its been a good life,
both growing up and being married, she said.
The military is like having another family.

second mural project.
Reinardy was approached by Jim Winters of
the Sauk Centre American

the building. The building,

of an American flag. He
presented it to the Legion,

French woman honors fallen soldiers at pinal cemetery

By JENN JANAK
Staff Writer

HOLDINGFORD
World War II was a time in
history not soon to be forgotten, but also a time that
few can still recall.
For the people of
France, the U.S. soldiers
who lost their lives at pinal and other French battlefields in the liberation of
the French from the Germans on Sept. 21, 1944 are
forever honored at the pinal American Cemetery
and Memorial.
Anne Cascales regularly volunteers at the
cemetery located along
the Moselle River providing insight to tourists
of the fallen soldiers and
those still missing from
tcombat.
Recently, she visited
Eagles Healing Nest in
Sauk Centre to pay tribute
to American veterans who
continue to protect the liberty of others.
I find it so important
that places like this exist
for soldiers to be safe and
honored for their service,
said Cascales about the
amenities the Nest provides. I wanted to come
here and thank the veterans for all they have done
for peoples freedom.
Cascales
became
aware of Eagles Healing
Nest from a quilting pal,
Marilyn Bujalski, of Clear
Lake. The friends first
connected through Marcia
Bujarski who was Annes
quilting pen pal since
1996.
Through
conversations back and forth, the
French woman realized
that Bujalski provided
quilts to the veterans at the
Nest. To date, Bujalski has
donated 25 quilts to the
servicemen and women
living at the Sauk Centre
establishment.
I started making

quilts of valor for veterans here ever since I heard

about this place, Bujalski
said.
Cascales immediately
became interested in not
only helping create quilts
for soldiers, but also visiting the Eagles Healing
Nest and meeting with
those that have served.
Over the years, Bujalski has taught Cascales
certain patterns for the
veteran quilts. She then
returned to her homeland,
teaching other women the
pattern.
Instead of charging a
fee for my quilting classes,
each woman has to make
a block from the pattern
for the quilts that Marilyn
makes, Cascales said.
Weve made more than
300 for your soldiers.
This fall was Cascales fourth time visiting
the United States, however, the very first time inter-

acting with veterans at the

Eagles Healing Nest.
During her time in
Sauk Centre, she told stories of the positive impact
U.S. soldiers have had on
the French culture.
She recalled the liberation of France from Germany, which began with
the assistance of U.S. soldiers in June known as
D-Day and August Operation Dragoon in 1944.
My
father-in-law
always told the story of
when he met your soldiers, Cascales said.
There were groups of
U.S. Army men that traveled with the French up
the Moselle River first and
then the Rhine River to
cross over into Germany.
However,
as
the
U.S. soldiers assisted the
French, many enemy attacks took place throughout the winter in Lorraine,
making it more deadly

than the D-Day invasion

of Normandy. A temporary
cemetery was quickly established, followed by the
French government granting use of the site as a permanent burial ground for
fallen U.S. soldiers.
A wall was also established for those whose
remains have yet to be
found.
They gave their life
for us, Cascales said.
Thats why we have the
cemetery.
To date, the French
take care of each grave,
campaigning an adopt-agrave program for the upkeep of every marker. Oftentimes, Cascales gives
tours of the cemetery,
speaking with U.S. families who visit to see their
loved ones.
Our goal is for every
family to know that their
soldiers have not been
forgotten, Cascales said.
Their work was and is
still much appreciated, for
without them, we would
not have been able to be
liberated.
The Cascales family

Thats when Clyde

out to fly a mission while
serving in the European

II.
Its been 70 years
since Tise returned home
to Melrose after flying 35
missions as an Air Force
navigator and bombardier,
but the military memories
remain.
Scared, I was, no
doubt, but you keep yourself busy when flying
through the flak (aircraft
fire), he said recently
when reminiscing about
his years in the military,
where he often sat in the
nose of a B-17 heavy
bomber airplane nicknamed Lady Liberty.
Virginia, his wife of
66 years, admits she learns
something new every time
she listens to Clydes stories of his military life that
also included service with
the National Guard unit
based out of Sauk Centre.
Call to duty
As a youngster, Tise
built model airplanes out
of balsam wood. It was no
surprise to his parents, Joseph and Mary Tise, that in

19-year-old Clyde enlisted
in the United States Air

in the European Theatre.
It didnt become the

1948, he said.
His brother, Tubby,
was also in the service and

Tise flew missions

After training in Texas, Tise, in February of

Tise was a member of

the 365th Squadron of the
305th Bomb Group. Four
squadrons made up one
group with three squadrons of 12 planes flying together during a mission.
At times, there were
2,500 aircraft in the air,
recalled Tise.
On a miniature replica
of a B-17 given to him by
their two sons, Karl and
Larry, he pointed out crew

positions in the plane, including the pilot, copilot,

navigator,
bombardier,
gunner, engineer, assistant
engineer, radio operator,
ball turret and tail gunner.
Tises position was
usually out in the front,
right in the nose. There
were two people there, the
navigator and the bombardier, both Tises MOS
(Military Occupation Specialty).
The bombardier was
responsible for two guns
up front. I had to make
sure the machine guns
were ready for combat,
said Tise.
He explained the
bombardier controlled the
course of the plane during
bombing runs, after which
the pilot took over.
As a navigator, Tise
plotted where the plane
was supposed to go and
was responsible for keeping the plane on course to
hit the target.
They did saturation
bombings, where everyone
dropped their bombs at the
same time, usually from
about 20,000 to 28,000
feet. Through space below
him, Tise could see if a target was hit, assuming there
was a clear sky.
We had to stay out
of the way of the German
fighter planes who were up
in the air all the time, said

A LIFETIME COMMITMENT OF HUMBLE SERVICE

Toenies reminisces of time being a military wife

by JENN JANAK
STAFF WRITER

SAUK CENTRE
Military women wear many
hats as wives, mothers and
confidants for the family
they unconditionally support.
When Karen Marthaler
married Keith Toenies, she,
too, knew her role as her
husbands better half would
be a hat trick of courageousness, reassurance and
unconditional love as he
proudly served our country
as part of the United States
Army National Guard.
I came from a farm
around here, Karen said.
I had no immediate family that was involved in the
military, and certainly being
a military wife was something I was completely unfamiliar with.
For Keith, things were
different. Coming from a
family of strong military
heritage, he joined the National Guard in 1979, marrying Karen three years
later.
Soon after their marriage, Keith enlisted in the
United States Army.
I was both excited
and scared for the journey,
Karen said. Being far away
from what I was always
used to was my biggest
fear.
Spending four years
with the Army, the Toenieses traveled to Germany and

Colorado following Keiths

work.
That wasnt easy,
Karen said. He was there
to work, but we did get to
experience a different culture and sight-see.
By 1987, Keith transitioned from the Army into
a full-time position with
the National Guard. This
allowed the couple to settle
and create a more-grounded routine in Sauk Centre,
where they would raise two
children Aaron and Sara.
I was lucky to have
a great support system and
when Keith traveled, our
children understood where
he was at the time, Karen
said.
However, being absent
from family activities due
to the work of the National
Guard took on a different
meaning when Keith was
deployed to Iraq in 2005.
Recalling that time,
Karen could not remember
how she planned for Keiths
absence.

You dont really know
how to prepare for something like deployment until
youre going through it,
she said.
From past experiences
of Keith being away from
home, Karen knew one of
the first things the couple
needed to do was prepare
a list of contacts for when
Keith was away in Iraq a
task she continues to encourage other military cou-

ples to follow through with. between wives a notion

Before he leaves, that only few could relate
know who to call when
things go wrong, Karen
said. Make a list of every
person who you might need
to get a hold of to fix something.

There was also a group
of friends and family that
often lent a helping hand to
the Toenieses.
They were everything, Karen said. I could
never thank them enough
for their help.
Throughout
Keiths
time with the National
Guard, the Karen created
lasting friendships with other military families. There
was a mutual understanding

to.
Military is a commitment, Karen said. You
have to get over the disappointment that your loved
one isnt going to be around
all the time. Its OK to feel
worried, sad and lonely
sometimes.
To help in passing the
time, Karen and Keith corresponded with written letters and phone calls.
Of all the memories
made during Keiths time in
service, his return from Iraq
continues to be the fondest
for Karen.

I was so overwhelmed
and so excited for him to
be home, she said. Keith
had been away many times
throughout our marriage,
but this was the first time in
combat war was a different experience.

After 36 years of dedicated service to the United

States Department of Defense, Keith will retire this
December from the National Guard as Master Sergeant.
I just cant believe
weve made it this far,
Karen said. Its quite a big
thing for Keith to be able to
do this.
Standing alongside her
husband as a caring support
system for more than three
decades, Karen is honored
to have been and continues
to be a military wife.
Looking back I feel
the military has provided
us with a good living, she
said. Im very proud that
Keith has been part of a
group of people that are the
reason we are able to enjoy
the freedoms we have.

days later, they returned
to England and Tise discovered a fellow Melrose
man, Abe Spaeth, who
was a medic serving with
the Eighth Air Force, was
concerned about him.
Tise talked about Melrose native, Francis Lent,
an Air Force pilot who
flew a P-38 and had 11
victories. Lent was a model airplane buddy of Tises
from years ago.
Frannie died in a
crash while doing transition flying from a P-38 to
a P-51 fighter, said Tise.
Years later, Tise found out
he had a first cousin, Frank
Tise, a fighter plane pilot
in the German Air Force,
who was shot down and
killed during a dogfight
with American fighters
over Rome, Italy.
I had never met him.
Most of the family came
over here (to the United
States), said Tise, who
was wounded in his right
shoulder while flying on a
mission over Germany.
He mentions Virginias cousin, Jack, who was
flying with a B-29 crew
in the South Pacific that
went down and was never
found. Tise said his crew
felt fortunate that they had
no fatalities during their
missions.
Returning home
Discharged in June
of 1945, a first lieutenant,
Tise headed home on a
hospital ship. He and Melrose resident Ralph Tieman, who would become
his long-time neighbor,
were some of the first military men to return home,
Tise said. Tise recalls how
he met Tieman while both
were in London during
their deployments.
Tise joined the National Guard Unit stationed in Sauk Centre. He
also joined the American
Legion. Tise and other vet-

erans, were instrumental in

starting the Melrose VFW
in 1946.
In December of 1950,
Tise and fellow National
Guard members started
their two-year tour of duty
during the Korean War.
He and other members
from the Sauk Centre unit,
Service Company, of the
136th Infantry Regiment,
47th Viking Division,
were sent to Korea during
the next year as replacement troops.
Tise was the chief
warrant officer in the
Armys food service, stationed with the Triple
Nickel 555th Field Artillery in Korea. In October
of 1952, he was discharged
at Camp Carson, Colo.
Tise has earned numerous medals for his military service.
A few years ago he
was one of eight people

from his National Guard

unit who received an honor from Gov. Mark Dayton.
Tise has pages of military material he has saved
over the years, including
V-Mail (Victory Mail) he
and Tubby wrote to their
parents.
One, sent by Tubby,
read, Mothers Day greetings from far off lands.
Many memories of
service to his country are
ingrained in his mind,
which he admits, at age
92, is fading. As he sat in
their Melrose Park View
apartment next to Virginia,
he tried to sing the words
to Wild Blue Yonder, the
Air Forces song.
You are all fighting
together, said Tise. You
learn to appreciate teamwork, your buddies and
life.

Cherished memories from years past

The Korea Hensley remembers

Military a great
way of life for some
by DIANE LEUKAM
STAFF WRITER

Drunken pigs on
bikes, honey wagons
pulled by oxen and Bob
Hope.
When Chub Hensley,
of Osakis, sees people
driving fancy new Hyundais, its hard for him to
believe. He remembers a
very different Korea.
Although the midsixties were years of
military drafts, Hensley
enlisted in the U.S. Army
at the age of 18. Still a
very young man when he
got to Korea, he describes
his very first experience
there.
When we landed,
we were picked up by a
couple of military guys.
We noticed a terrible
odor. In front of us was
a team of oxen pulling a
cart. We later found out
it was human waste to be
used for fertilizer on the
rice fields. We called it a
honey wagon.
Although it was a

smelly start, Hensley

was impressed with the
strength of the oxen pulling their various loads of
cargo.
I owned a trucking company [after the
military]. That was their
trucking company, said
Hensley.
Not all commodities
were hauled by oxen. A
common sight was people hauling their pigs to
market, one at a time...
strapped on the back of
their bicycles. The pigs
were very calm, and
Hensley found out they
were filled with alcohol.
That would calm
them down and they
would lay on the bicycle
and sleep. Naturally, the
first time you see it, you
wonder, am I really seeing this, he said with a
smile.
Turning the pages of
his military photo album,
Hensley comes across

Bob Hope, along with
the beautiful ladies that
accompanied him on his
USO tours.
I was privileged to
see Bob Hope in both
Korea and Vietnam. A lot
of people were never in
a position to see a USO

Hensleys
duties
while in Korea, and in
most cases during his ca-

reer, involved firefighting.

They were to save planes
that were in trouble, often
helping them to get back
on the runway.
We had to make sure
the planes got in safe and
out safe, he said.
In Korea, the fire station where he lived was in
downtown Inchon. Across
the street there was always a little handicapped

chair and a stick. Hed
hit the chair with the stick
and watch it rock. Then
hed hit it again.
We felt sorry for
him, and a bunch of us
GIs went together and
bought him a lot of toys
for Christmas. A few days
later he was back to his
old toys.
After his time in the
military was up, Hensley

would have liked to reenlist, but he had hearing

problems and would have
needed special permission to stay.
In the meantime, he
went back home to Osakis.
While hed been gone, a
young woman, Jan, from
a family he had known,
had been widowed, losing
her husband and a leg in
an accident. They started
dating and then married. Between them they
have six children. Chub
has two daughters, Mary
and Pam, from a previous marriage, who live in
Texas. Jan has a daughter, Dawn, who lives next
door to the Hensleys, and
together they have three
children, Darrin, Kari and
Christa.
In 1975, Chub and Jan
started Hensley Trucking,
Inc., out of their home,
then moved the business
into Osakis 4-5 years later. They started out hauling eggs and branched
into other food products,
mainly to and from Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Illinois.

nine years, Hensley covered a lot of ground. He
went from Fort Hood,
Texas, to California, Korea (1964-65), Arlington,

Area Civil War veterans left their mark

PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE MELROSE AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY

by HERMAN LENSING
STAFF WRITER

MELROSE The
words in the song When
Johnny Comes Marching
Home took on a literal
meaning throughout the
United States, in late fall
of 1865.
When the Civil War,
which started in 1861,
ended in 1865, soldiers
returned home throughout
the United States. Minnesota, despite having been
only a state for three years
before the war started,
was the first to commit
troops to the Union cause.
Among the first to volunteer was Charles Lamb, of
Melrose Township. Lamb
was unique among Civil
War veterans, buried in
local cemeteries. He volunteered with a Minnesota
regiment and is among the
few who fought in the Civil War and in the Dakota
War, which started in the
fall of 1862.
A native of Pennsylvania, who had mined in
Wisconsin, Lamb settled
in Melrose Township in
1861.
Lamb served with the
Co. 1 Third, Minnesota
Volunteer Infantry in Sauk
Centre.
The regiment was
mustered on Oct. 1, 1861,
at Ft. Snelling. By then
the war was underway and
the Third Minnesota was
assigned garrison duty in
Kentucky and later Tennessee. On July 13, 1862,
the regiment was stationed
at Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Confederate Gen. Nathan
Bedford Forrest led a cavalry raid that overran the
Union positions. Based on
reports of inquiry of the
battle, the Minnesota Third
did little fighting, and its
officers surrendered, much
to the disagreement of the
troops.
Lamb was among
those who were surrendered and later paroled
back to Minnesota. The
regiment was then sent to
western Minnesota during
the Dakota Uprising. The
initial surge of the Dakota
offensive had ended, but
the Dakota still had a fighting force in the field. The
Third Regiment was with
Henry Sibley at a lake near
what is now Echo when
Sibley forces were ambushed. The Third Minnesota was credited for fighting valiantly and helped
win the day. It was the last
major battle in the Dakota
War. Lamb was wounded
in the battle. He was mustered out on Nov. 14, 1864.
The unit saw action at
and fought with distinction at Vicksburg, (1863),
Little Rock (1863) and
Fitzhugh Woods (1864).
The Third Regiment was
mustered out in September
of 1865.
Before Lamb passed
away in 1905, he was
township assessor and

Adelbert Whitney served

in a New York regiment
from 1861 to1865. He became Melroses first street
commissioner and was
president of the Village
Council and later Itasca
State Park.

William Whitney fought at

surveyor and operated

a post office and stagecoach shop. He farmed
near Stewards Bridge. He
married Sarah Fawcett in
1872, and they had five
children. In 1876 he was
elected to the Minnesota
Legislature. He died Sept.
1, 1905, and is buried in
Oak Hill Cemetery on the
eastern edge of Melrose.
While he saw action
on two fronts, Lamb, in
many ways, is similar to
veterans from his and other days.
Most local Civil War
veterans, buried in the
three Melrose cemeteries Oak Hill, St. Marys
and St. Patricks did not
serve in Minnesota-based
troops.
Minnesota troops did
earn a reputation for courage and tenacity. The First
Minnesota is credited by
more than one historian
for having saved the day
for the Union on the second day at Gettysburg.
The unit was ordered to
fill a gap in thinning Union
lines. They charged to fill
lines and although outnumbered (some estimates
are five-to-one), they filled
the gap and held it long
enough for reinforcements
to reach the scene and stop
the Confederate advance.
The unit sustained
well over 70 percent casualties but the next day
was called on to counter
Picketts charge. It did so.
A Confederate battle flag
captured at Gettysburg is
still at the Minnesota Historical Society.
The Minnesota First
earned a reputation for
courage and fighting. Its
emblem was a white threeleaf clover that looked
like a club from a deck of
cards. Late in the war, one
Confederate general recognized the emblem during a battle and reportedly
said, Heres those damned
white clubs again.
Among the Civil War
veterans buried in Melrose
cemeteries are William
Whitney, who served with
a New York light artillery

who served in the Army

of the Potomac. Salfinger,
who fought in many of the
major battles, was the last
Civil War veteran to be
buried in a Melrose cemetery. He moved into the
Melrose area in 1895. He
was an inspector of watches for the Great Northern
Railroad, and owned a repair shop on Main Street.
Whitney fought in
22 battles and attended
Abraham Lincolns second inaugural address. He
moved to Millwood Township in 1867 and died in
1932.
Possibly the best
known of the Civil War
veterans buried in a Melrose Cemetery is Solomon
Foot, better known for
his actions in the Dakota

Uprising than in the Civil

War.
Although
severely
wounded, he survived an
attack on his farmstead in
the early days of the uprising. In 1864, he enlisted in
the Hatch Battalion, Minnesota Volunteer Battalion
for duty on the MinnesotaDakota Territory border.
Foot settled in Melrose
in 1869, running the post
office and stagecoach station. He is buried at Oak
Hill.
Other Civil War Veterans buried in Melrose
include the following: Oak

brothers Elam, Frank and
Omar Morehouse, William
Macadam, Searles Ulmer,

Henry W. Van Rensselaer

fought in 15 engagements
with a Michigan unit and
later the First Minnesota.
He was 38 when he died.

Timmer; St. Patrick: John He is buried in Oak Hill

Patrick Graham, Edward

Graham and Michael Meagher.
The veterans returned
to their same homes but to
a different nation. Slavery
had been abolished. The
western plains were opening for settling and industrial technology was play-

ing a greater role in their

lives.
They came marching home to salutes and
parades, and became the
farmers, merchants, railroad workers and politicians who helped settle the
area and create the towns
that exist today.

Trip to war didnt halt farm life for LeRoy Young

by LIZ VOS

HOLDINGFORD
At 21, LeRoy Young
was doing what he
loved: farming.
It was just always
in my blood, said
Young. I went to country school and then finished eighth grade in
Holdingford. After that,
I was done and I learned
everything else on the
farm.
But Youngs plans
to work the land and
run a dairy operation on
his familys farm south
of Holdingford came to
a halt in 1953 when he
was drafted to serve in
the Korean War.
I was 21 years old
and didnt get out until
I was 24, he said. I
spent 16 weeks at Fort
Lewis in Washington
where I trained.
Youngs training in
Washington focused on
artillery. Motioning to
his right ear, equipped
with a hearing aid, he
points out the long-term
effects of the training
with a good sense of humor.
Thats why I cant
hear anything, he said
with a chuckle.

LeRoy and Eileen Young exchanged letters back and forth during his time of service
in the Korean War from 1953-1955. The two married in 1956.

Korean War came to an

end on July 27, 1953
when the armistice was
signed Young had eight
weeks of training left in
Washington at the time.
Despite the fight ending,
the war was not finished
(clashes between North
Korea and South Korea
have continued to the
present), and the role of
the United States military was not complete.
After a 10-day visit back
home to Holdingford,
LeRoy was sent first to
Tokyo, Japan in November 1953 and then on to

Korea.
We left Japan on
Thanksgiving
Day,
he recalled. And even
though I trained for artillery in the U.S., by
the time I got there, my
job was to work the telephone switchboard and
radio in the 25th Infantry Division.
As communication
went back and forth
between posts, Young
hoped and prayed he
would not have to take
a call warning of an attack on the camp. He
was grateful that the call

At the end of his
nine months in Korea,
Young had a chance to
stay with the 25th as it
transitioned to a base
in Hawaii. He thought
about it for a day or two
and decided it would be
better than his current
surroundings.

Young spent nine
months with the 25th
Infantry Division in
Korea. The bitter winter nights still remain a
sharp memory for him,
as temperatures dipped
down as low as 17 below zero.
It was chilly in an
eight-man squat tent,
he recalled. We spent
as much time during
the day wrapped up in
our sleeping bags as we
could. There was a stove
for heat, but that only
got lit in the afternoon

or evening we were on
our own for heat through
the nights.
Again, with his
sense of humor, Young
laughs about the impact
of the cold nights huddled in a sleeping bag.
I have never gone
camping since, he said
with another chuckle.
Much of the time in
Korea was passed with
conversation
among
comrades, he said.
I had been kind of
shy before that but
I got to meet a lot of
people and I am not shy
anymore! he said.
There were occasional USO shows that
came through to provide
a change of pace for the
troops.

Along with farming, LeRoy Young also enjoys working with metal he created this

er had homemade coffee

cake waiting for him.
All the while during
the war, he wrote and
received letters from his
family, who kept him
posted on how the cows,
pigs, horses and other
farm life were doing.
Letters were also exchanged between he and
a girl named Eileen.
The two had met a
couple of times before
he was called to serve
and when he returned
they met up once again
at what was once known
as the Avon Ballroom
for a dance and the
courting continued.

The two married in

1956 and purchased a
farm of their own north
of Holdingford. While
they cannot recall what
they said in their letters, they know they still
have them in storage
somewhere.
I know they are
here, I just dont know
where and I just cannot remember what we
talked about, Eileen
said of the written communication. So much
has changed. Back
then, there werent even
phones for him to call
back home it is just so
different, not much was

said.
The Youngs raised
seven children on the
farm and now have 11
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren. LeRoy continues to work
on the farm, often from
sun-up until sundown,
alongside his oldest son,
who now owns the farm.
LeRoys time of service may have pulled
him from the farm for a
time, but it did not pull
the love of farming from
him. He has been a dairy
farmer for 58 years
never once allowing the
chill of war to pull the
passion from his blood.

A mother and her flag

She did the best she could to

ST. ANTHONY
It was just the way she
was persistent, hardworking and loving.
Elizabeth
(Cremers)
Welters granddaughter, Rose Fuchs, looks
back on the time she
spent with her grandmother with much joy.
She was a wonderful woman nothing stopped her, Rose
said.
Despite becoming
a widow and single
mother early in life,
Elizabeth raised her
family with care and
compassion, instilling
in them a strong work
ethic and pride for their
country.
In 1918, Elizabeths oldest son, Peter,
was drafted to serve in
World War I. Left without his help on the farm
north of St. Anthony,

Elizabeth vowed to
keep up on her own.
She did the best
she could to keep her
little farm going, said
Rose, who is Peters
daughter. But she attached an American
flag to her horse-drawn
plow to honor her sons
service.
Though
photos
were a rarity at the
time, an unknown photographer was able
to capture a mothers
pride as she worked in
her dress plowing potatoes on a breezy afternoon.
Elizabeths pride
would carry on as her
descendants continued
to serve the country, a
tradition that has now
led to her great-greatgranddaughters service in the Air Force.
Eventually, Elizabeths grandsons, Allen Welters and Ervin

What started with a

transpired into a multigenerational call to
