DMM3623 Mechanical Design

Assignment 1 Section 1 Only (75%)

Due Date: Tuesday, 31 March 2015, 5 p.m.
Question 1
Force, F = 800 N causes twisting & bending of a 20 mm diameter shaft fixed to
a support at the origin of the reference system. The shaft is made of ductile
material of AISI 1050 hot-rolled steel. In actuality, the support may be an
inertia that we wish to rotate, but for the purposes of a stress analysis we can
consider this a static problem.
a) Calculate the torsional stress and bending stress at the top surface of the
shaft at A.
(6 Marks)
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stresses at the top surface of
the shaft at A for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion
energy theories. Compare and comment about the results.
(14 Marks)

Question 2
The shaft is loaded by the forces F = 0.55 kN, P = 8.0 kN and T = 30 N.m. The
shaft is made of ductile material of AISI 1030 cold-drawn steel.
a) Calculate the stresses at point A and B.
(10 Marks)
b) Determine the factor of safety based on the stresses at point A and point B
for yielding using maximum shear stress and distortion energy theories.
Compare and comment about the results.
(20 Marks)

Question 3
Imagine that you are a design engineer of a shipyard company responsible for a
design of ship structure, which is experienced to apply static loading. Your
responsibility is to design a ship deck plate with 30 mm thickness, 2 m width
and 18 m length. The ship deck plate is made of Aluminum Alloy 7178. It is
loaded with a nominal uniaxial tensile stress of 80 MPa. Consider that a 75 mm
long central transverse crack is present.
a) Estimate the tensile stress at which catastrophic failure occurs.
(10 Marks)
b) Estimate the tensile stress at which catastrophic failure occurs if the crack
is present at the edge of the plate instead of central transverse crack?
Compare and comment about the results.
