BACKGROUND
The Griffith School of Engineering has been providing tertiary qualifications to the Civil Engineering
profession for over 2 decades and is known for its innovative and student focussed teaching
approaches and its strong industry relationships. There has been a rapid growth in student numbers
since 2007 and we now teach over 2000 students at both undergraduate and postgraduate programs
in several disciplines, including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic and Environmental
Engineering as well as in Industrial Design.
This academic position contributes to the delivery and development of civil engineering courses
offered in the undergraduate engineering programs as well as the specialised postgraduate program.
The position has a strong teaching focus with a special emphasis placed on incorporating experiential
teaching and learning techniques in civil design and/or structural engineering.

POSITION OBJECTIVES
This position is required to teach and conduct research in the area of civil design and/or structural
engineering and contribute to the development and improvement of civil engineering programs on the
Gold Coast campus. The successful applicant will be required to employ experiential learning
techniques in their courses and to assist others in implementing such approaches into their teaching
practices.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Develop, deliver and manage civil design and/or structural engineering related courses
including the use of experiential learning techniques, assessment of student performance and
student consultation.

Contribute to teaching, including convening other relevant courses.

Assist in course and program development and the review of curriculum to improve teaching
activities.

Develop flexible/blended learning material with a strong focus on experiential learning


approaches.

Develop an active and recognised research profile in civil engineering and complement ongoing research efforts within the School or broader University context.

Publish high quality research outputs in civil engineering or related areas and form research
collaborations and industry links and seek appropriate grants in areas linked to the Griffith
School of Engineering.

Supervise undergraduate student projects and higher degree research students.

Contribute to both internal and external service within the School, the University and the
community, including engagement with the administrative and marketing activities of the
School.

Promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures,
including equity, health and safety and exhibit good practice in relation to same.

Promote fair, ethical and professional work practices in accordance with the University Code
of Conduct.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:

PhD (or equivalent) in civil design and/or structural engineering or related area.

Eligibility to be a member of Engineers Australia or equivalent professional association.

Demonstrated capacity and experience in quality tertiary teaching with a strong focus on
experiential learning approaches (e.g. CDIO and experiential, problem-based or projectbased learning).

Demonstrated profile in publishing high scholarly research in the area of civil engineering.

Proven high level of written and oral communication skills.

The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with academic,
administrative and technical staff, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Desirable:

Demonstrated industry experience in civil design and/or structural engineering.

Demonstrated ability to secure external research and consultancy funding.

Demonstrated profile in publishing in the area of engineering education.

Demonstrated ability to supervise Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
