Australian Curriculum Learning Area: Arts and English


Year level: Grade 1
Lesson Title: Musical Nursery Rhymes
Learning Outcomes:
The learning outcomes of this lesson are:
- For students to develop and apply creative and critical thinking to a rhythmic musical activity
- For students to communicate ideas, share their innovative rhythms and express their
imaginations
Success Criteria:
Were students actively engaged in the warm-up activity? Did students engage in conversation
and freely express ideas during the main activity? Did all groups complete their rhyme and
rhythm in the allotted time?
Curriculum Content:
Arts Curriculum

through making and responding to artworks with increasing self-confidence

English Curriculum

Listen to, recite and perform poems, chants, rhymes and songs, imitating and inventing
sound patterns including alliteration and rhyme(ACELT1585)

Teaching and Learning Sequence:

Resources:

1. Introduce the group and explain that for the PowerPoint Presentation including the
next three weeks, we will be playing some Pass the Ball song and the Nursery
creative games through music, drama and Rhymes.

2. Conduct a warm-up activity Pass the Ball.
o First have the students sit in a circle
with each of the Prac Teachers spread
throughout the circle.
o Refer to the PowerPoint to sing the
song. Encourage students to sing along
when they are comfortable.
o Have all the students and Prac Teachers
stand ready for the game

o Pass the ball down the line, and keep


it in time. Pass the beat, take a seat,
youre out! Pass the ball to and fro and
before you know, it will come back to
you!
3. Once the warm-up activity is complete, have
the students sit back down in the circle. Each
Prac Teacher will then read out one of the
following rhymes:
o Mary Had a Little Lamb
o Insty Wincy Spider
o Humpty Dumpty
o Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
4. Explain the activity Students will have the
remainder of the lesson to change their
nursery-rhyme into a musical rhythm using
their bodies as percussion. The Prac Teachers
can demonstrate this using Hot Cross Buns.
5. Sort the students into four groups, each with a
Prac Teacher as a group leader.
6. The Prac Teachers will assist the groups in
coming up with their rhythms.
7. In the final 10 minutes of the lesson the groups
will be allowed to present their nursery rhyme
rhythm for their peers.
8. Conclude the lesson by giving positive feedback
on each group and thanking the students for
their time and attention.
