A man from Yorkshire got more than he bargained

for when he went shopping with his son last week.
Mr Tom Lal, 56, took his son, Raj, to a caf and paid
for their coffees at the till with a ten-pound note.
Once seated, Mr Lal was looking idly at the receipt
and suddenly realized that he should have more
change. He took out his wallet and saw that it only
contained 1.80. He went back to the counter to
explain. Im sorry, said the assistant, but you
should check your change when you pay for items.
When Mr Lal tried to protest, the assistant said, If
customers checked their change, we wouldnt keep
having this problem. Feeling deflated, Mr Lal sat
down again. Then, while putting the money away, he
noticed a twenty-pence piece among the coins. Do
you know whats strange about this, Raj? Look
closely. Raj was on the verge of handing it back to
his father, when he said, It doesnt have a date on
it. Exactly! exclaimed Mr Lal triumphantly. Only a
few of these were ever made. Theyre very rare, and
worth quite a bit of money. She gave me this in my
change!
