diabetestreatmentdrugunderthebrandnameTrulicity,inthecountry.The
medicineisaninjectablemedicationandbelongstoaclasscalledGLP1
(Glucagonlikepeptide1)receptoragonists.Trulicitycomesinasingledosepen
andisdesignedtoimprovethebloodsugarcontrolinadultswithtype2diabetes.
Alltheseproductlaunchesbothbylocalandmultinationalcompanieswere
targetedtowardstype2diabetes.
Whatistype2diabetes?Accordingtotheworldhealthorganisation(WHO),type2
diabetes(formerlycallednoninsulindependentoradultonsetdiabetes)iscaused
bythebodysineffectiveuseofinsulin.Itoftenresultsfromexcessbodyweight
andphysicalinactivity.Inadditiontotype2diabetes,therearetwootherformsof
diabetes:type1andgestationaldiabetes.
AccordingtoWHOreport,thereare69.1millioncasesofdiabetesin2015inIndia
and415millionpeopleworldwide.Italsopointedthatthenumberofdeathsin
adultsduetodiabetesis1.03millionandnumberofcasesofdiabetesinadults
thatareundiagnosedis36.06million.Thereportobservedthatby2035,itis
estimatedthat123.5millionpeoplewillhavediabetes.Thealarmingfactisthat
almosthalfoftheexistingdiabetespatientsareunawarethattheyhavediabetes.
Diabetesconsumesbetween5%and25%oftheincomeofanaverageIndian
family,accordingtoareportpublishedinJournalofDiabetology,whichtranslates
to$2.2billionayearondiabetescareandtreatment.Manypatientsareunawareof
treatmentexpensesandarenotabletoplanthebudget.Indevelopedcountries,

diabetesaloneclaimsonaveragearound8%oftotalhealthcarebudgets.Theper
capitaexpenditureonhealthcareinIndiaisonly6.4%ofaverageworldspending.
Thedirecthealthcarecostofdiabetesisestimatedtobeatleast$153billion
annuallyforpeopleinthe20to79agegroup.
