SUMMARY OF PROCESS MANAGEMENT TALK

On Teusday 17th february 2015, an event was held in Dewan Perak Uitm
Terengganu Kampus Bukit Besi to talk about process management and safety in
chemical engineering field. Ir Nik Mohd Sapawi Bin Nik Salleh from Processwell
Engineering Sdn Bhd was invited to give students talk.
The objectives of the talk was to expose the students about the important
of the knowledge about the process safety management and the accidents that
occured in the past because of poor knowledge of management. The talk covered
about the process safety management and operation & maintenance of safety
critical devices.
Process safety management is a management process for identifying,
evaluating and controlling the hazards associated with a process facility. It is
intended to minimized the likelihood of a major hazard accident occuring and to
ensure that the necessary emergency preparedness mechanisms are in place and
in the event that an accident does happen. The objective of the process safety
management is to prevent catastrophic releases of highly hazardous chemicals.
The identifying in process management means the identify of process safety
informatin and hazard identification. Meanwhile the evaluating means the
evaluate of risk assessment, audit, incident investigation and management of
change. The controlling consist the control of procedure, training, MI, work
permit, PSSR and control the contractor safety and emergency preparedness.
The poor of process management will lead into accidents to happen. Many
of major accidents were happened because of that. the effects of accidents will
cause the severe injuries and the death of people, the landscape of the accident
place and the place nearby will destroy and the high cost damages. For example,
the accident that occured in Norco, LA because of the releasing of the flammable
hydrocarbon vapors. the effects of the accidents were included 7 onsite fatalities,
42 injured and the damages that cost $400M++. The worst accidents was the
accident that takes place in Bhopal, India. On 3 December 1984 the accident
occured because the releasing of approximately 25 tons of methyl isocynate. It
was declared as the worst one because the number of fatalities are over than
2500. Also, over 250,000 seek medical treatment and over 70,000 need to be
evacuated. The after effects were estimated 2,500 death from the accident.
For the operation and maintenance of safety critical devices, it about the
safety instrumented safety that designed to respond to conditions in the plant
which may be hazardous in themselves or if no action was taken, could
eventually give ris eto hazard, and respond to these conditions by taking defined
actions that either prevent the hazard or mitigate the hazard consequences. The
deviced that designed is used to detect the fault, testing frequency, online

testing of final elements, and online testing sensors. The talk also covered about
HAZOP, PHA anf FMEA. And it well explained.
In conclusion, the talk covered most of the engineering students and engineer tobe need to know.
