The research study deals with the performance of workers in industries and were taken as
the sample .the present study was, therefore designed to examine the effect of Motivation
and development in the performance of workers in industries. The specific objectives of
the research were:
1) To know the importance of Motivation and development in industry among
workers.
2) To know the difficulties faced by the unmotivated workers.
3) To understand relation between Motivation and development and performance of
workers;
Unskilled workers are giving Motivation in improve methods of handling
machines and materials. The objective here is to secure reduction in cost of
production and waste. Motivation is given on the job it self by immediate superior
officers.

INTRODUCTION
In simpler terms Motivation & Development refer to the imparting of specific
skills abilities and knowledge to an employee. Motivation is a short-term process
utilizing a systematic and organized procedure by which non- managerial personnel
acquire knowledge and skills for a definite purpose. It refers to instructions in technical
and mechanical operations, like operation of some machine. It is designed primarily for
non-managers, it is for a short duration, and it is for a specific job-related purpose.
Development is a long-term educational process utilizing a systematic and organized
procedure by which managerial personnel get conceptual and theoretical knowledge. In
other words it refers not to technical knowledge and skills in operation but to
philosophical and theoretical educational concepts. It involves broader education and its
purpose is long-term development.

In the field of human resource management,

Motivation and development is the field concerned with organizational activity aimed
at bettering the performance of individuals and groups in organizational settings. It has
been known by several names, including employee development, human resource
development, and learning and development.
One of the most important factors that lead one to their goals is the drive.
This drive is known as motivation. It is a zest and determination with a kind of
excitement that leads one to persevere to reach greater heights, in no matter what avenue
of their life; be it personal or professional. The drive may come from an internal or
external source. The individual determines this.
3

The factors that motivate an individual keep changing as one climbs the ladder of age and
maturity. And also, achievement of one goal sets the ball rolling for another one to be
achieved. Thus, to be motivated is a constant need. There are times when one faces a
period of de-motivation and everything seems bleak. It is then that they need to find what
would motivate them back into action.
For every individual there is a variable driving force. In fact, it is not just a single factor,
but a combination of factors that lead people to achieve their goals. The fact is that with
routine monotony steps in and then everything seems like stagnant waters. It feels like
there is nothing new.
Breaking this cycle of monotony has helped many bounce back with enthusiasm. This is
why human resource managers create a Motivation calendar, which will take away
employees from the routine they are stuck to, as well as enhance their skills in various
areas. When one is fired from the belly and ready to take the difficult path to achieve
their goals and targets, they are said to be motivated. And this is a strong feeling or urge.
It is fired by internal, as well as external factors. Thus, when asked what is motivation?
The answer is as simple as this: It is the driving force that keeps one going towards one's
goals.
However, one needs to keep in mind that there are various factors that keeps one
motivated through life, and this varies from person to person. The factors are neither age
specific, nor gender specific. They are simply case specific. According to various experts
is depends on the needs that need to be fulfilled; and the desires one wishes to accomplish
or gain.
Before going further one needs to understand that there are primarily two types of
motivation:
. Positive Motivation : This brings about positive response to the action that one needs to
undertake in order to achieve their goals
. Negative Motivation : Means being reinforced with fear, anxiety and such negative
feelings in order to have tasks and goals achieved
4

According to universal expert consensus, motivation is behavior that is driven by a goal.

This implies that one is diverted towards achieving the set targets, no matter what. These
maybe simple need based targets such as food, clothing and shelter. Or then goals of
fame, recognition and prosperity. Or at the top of the rung the goal of self-realization.
Each journey requires a driving force and this fuel for the human body is motivation.
According to one of the universally accepted definitions of motivation, it
is an internal state of being, or an internal condition that activates one's behavior, giving it
direction. Motivation has also been defined as a desire or need which directs and
energizes behavior that is oriented towards a goal.
Another definition of motivation states that it is the influence of the needs and desires on
the intensity of behavior and direction it will follow. There is one more expert who
defined motivation as the arousal, direction, as well as persistence of one's behavior.
However, the fact remains that is rather difficult to clearly define motivation, as various
experts in the field have come to their varying conclusions through the years.
Really give that some serious thought. If you find that youre not giving ample time to
tasks which are necessary to move you in the direction you want your life to be dont
beat yourself up over it. Instead, right now at this very moment take a real, concrete
step which will lead you in the direction that you want to go. After youve done so, take
another

step!

Keep the following saying in mind the doing of a thing makes it so now get doing!

In public speaking motivation is defined as communicating to an

internal force that actuates a behavioral pattern, thought process, action or reaction.
Negative forces or positive forces can act as actuators.
In general it could include but is not limited to the use of words, circumstances,
situations, and external and internal forces.

When used effectively by a speaker, this force can help individuals or groups work
toward common goals and reach them. This means you can help individuals work toward
a goal.
Application of the definition of motivation is varied by socio-economic groups, culture,
background, and the neural programming of our brains.
The definition of motivation is to give reason, incentive, enthusiasm, or interest that
causes a specific action or certain behavior. Motivation is present in every life function.
Simple acts such as eating are motivated by hunger. Education is motivated by desire for
knowledge. Motivators can be anything from reward to coercion.
There are two main kinds of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation is
internal. It occurs when people are compelled to do something out of pleasure,
importance, or desire. Extrinsic motivation occurs when external factors compel the
person to do something. However, there are many theories and labels that serve as sub
tittles to the definition of motivation. For example: "I will give you a candy bar if you
clean your room." This is an example of reward motivation.
A common place that we see the need to apply motivation, is in the work place. In the
work force, we can see motivation play a key role in leadership success. A person unable
to grasp motivation and apply it, will not become or stay a leader. It is critical that anyone
seeking to lead or motivate understand "Howletts Hierarchy of Work Motivators."

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Concept of Motivation:Motivation is the activation or energization of goaloriented behavior. Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic. The term is generally
used for humans but, theoretically, it can also be used to describe the causes for animal
behavior (humans are also animals; false dichotomy) as well. This article refers to human
motivation. According to various theories, motivation may be rooted in the basic need to
minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure, or it may include specific needs such as
eating and resting, or a desired object, hobby, goal, state of being, ideal, or it may be
attributed to less-apparent reasons such as altruism, selfishness, morality, or avoiding
mortality. Conceptually, motivation should not be confused with either volition or
optimism.
If you want to make things happen the ability to motivate yourself and others is a crucial
skill. At work, home, and everywhere in between, people use motivation to get results.
Motivation requires a delicate balance of communication, structure, and incentives. 21
tactics will help you maximize motivation in yourself and others.

Factors within a human being or animal that arouse and direct goal-oriented behaviour.
Motivation has long been a central subject of study in psychology. Early researchers,
influenced by Charles Darwin, ascribed much of animal and human behaviour to instinct.
Sigmund Freud believed that much of human behaviour was also based on irrational
instinctive urges or unconscious motives. Walter B. Cannon proposed that basic human
drives served homeostatic functions by directing energies toward the reduction of
physiological tensions. Behavioral psychologists, in contrast, stress the importance of
external goals in prompting action, while humanistic psychologists examine the role of
felt needs. Cognitive psychologists have found that a motive sensitizes a person to

information relating to that motive: a hungry subject, for example, will perceive food
stimuli as larger than other stimuli.
However, the homeostatic model faces difficulties. First, not all basic biological drives
work this way. Second, motivated behavior can be influenced by external as well as
internal factors. Since these external influences are not coupled with the animal's internal
state, they can lead to behavior that does not promote homeostasis and may even threaten
it. To add to the complexity, internal and external factors are not independent and
additive; rather they interact with each other. In such cases, internal influences affect
behavior by setting the animal's responsiveness to certain external signals. The interaction
occurs in the opposite direction as well: external signals can affect internal state. Third,
especially in humans, vigorous and persistent goal-directed behavior can occur in the
absence of any physiological need.

Types of Motivation:Motivation involves the basic psychological reasons for

a person's actions and behavior. These are the forces or factors that cause a person to act a
certain way or to behave in the manner that they do.
There are various types of motivations that can influence a person. These include the
following:
Primary or Basic Motivation
This mainly pertains to motives involved with our need for self-preservation. This
includes needs such as hunger and thirst, warmth, sex, avoidance of pain and other
primary motives which influence a person's behaviour at a very basic level .
Secondary Motivation.
More known in psychology as "learned" motivation, this type of "drives" differ from one
person to another. In many ways they involve a person's own sense of values and
9

priorities in life.
Many of the behaviour derived from secondary motivation are conscious ones. That is, a
person consciously desires a particular goal or result, and behaves in a way that brings
them closer to that particular goal. What drives them to do something or to act in a
particular way is the longing for something which they currently do not have or possess.
There are many types of motivation, and they all can serve different purposes in your life.
Often, these types of motivation work together to creat an overall sensation of satisfaction
and determination. When you can utilize many types of motivation, you can tap into a
multitude of resources that will make your journey less stressful and more educational
. The various types of motivation provide different strengths and skills, so it is optimal to
have a wide variety of motivations and sources of motivation.
You can draw from many different types of motivation. The types generally work well
together to create a sense of well-being and connectedness - both to the project and to the
people around you. Think about the types of motivation that work best for you, and tap
into those resources today!

Seven Rules for Motivation:

#1 Set a major goal, but follow a path
#2 Finish what you start
#3 Socialize with others of similar interest.
#4 Learn how to learn
#5 Harmonize natural talent with interest that motivates.
#6 Increase knowledge of subjects that inspires
#7 Take risk.
