2 DATA MANIPULATION

2.1 Introduction
Surface mapping data and individual borehole discontinuities data were obtained
for geotechnical analyses. This chapter involves the preliminary studies on these
data by mapping them individually and also combined altogether to observe the
similarity and differences. Geological discontinuities mapping are done in the
form of stereonets. From these stereonets, a joint set were deduced based on the
highest concentration of joints and other discontinuities. If there are numerous
groups with similar concentration, more than one joint sets are selected.
Joints are predominantly the most frequent discontinuities in most rock (without
the presence of faults or shear zones). They are formed during the uplift of deep
rocks or any other rock stress relief conditions that cause the rock to shrink and
thus, creates a tensile crack in the form of joints. These joints, if created by the
same condition, usually share similar orientations and collectively known as a
joint set. Joint set can be traced by scanning a stereonet for a concentrated area
of joint type discontinuities.
Fault and shear zones are normally made under intense tectonic activities and
are much more significant towards geotechnical stability. They are extremely
precarious structures and may results in major slope or rock excavation failures.
If numerous, they may be exclusively plotted to highlight concentrated areas for
possible fault plane orientation.
The items to be analysed here are borehole discontinuities data, borehole rock
mass data and laboratory data.
This chapter will form the basis for all analyses and interpretations in the later
chapters.

2.2 Surface Mapping Data Analysis

A stereonet was plotted for the surface mapping data file obtained. Concentrated
regions above half of the maximum density are highlighted to infer the
possibility of being joint sets or a fault plane. Due to the large proportion of fault
and shear data, a separate stereonet was prepared to account for these two
types of discontinuities. Summaries of possible joint and faults sets are also
attached.

From this data combining all types of discontinuities, fault data is the majority by
far and this suggests a large number of fault planes. Beddings have, although
are low numbered, consistent dip angle at less than 10 (as shown in the central
region of the plot). There are 5 notable sets of discontinuities and all have similar
dip angle near 60. This means that all the sets are conjugate sets and may be
linked to one another, forming a large region of weak zone.

From this filtered data, most of the discontinuities set maintain their dips and dip
directions with slight variations. A new set (Set 6) is now more prominent with
the removal of some bedding and joint parameters. This set, too, has a dip angle
of close to 60.

2.3 Borehole Data Analysis

The selection of joint sets are based on the contour view and scatter plot. In a
contour view, a yellow to red coloured region which denotes an area of
concentrated joints is selected. With the scatter plot, regions with large
quantities of repeating pole vectors are selected. An example is shown below,
based on Borehole D203. Stereonet of other boreholes showing both contour and
scatter views can be found in Appendix A.

Figure 5 Contour view for Borehole D203

Figure 6 Scatter plot for Borehole D203

At least one joint set is selected for each borehole stereonet plot. All selected
joint sets orientation are shown in Table 1 below.

As shown in the table above, most joints sets (D203, D220, D241-1, D245-1,
D249-1, D256-1 and D256-2) have a low dip angle, which may infer the bedding
of overburden rocks. Other joint sets may very well refer to the actual joint sets
in the basement rocks however, these data is not reliable as they have been
largely affected by trivial overburden discontinuity data.
A separate stereonet was also plotted for combined borehole database, resulting
in a merged database. The contour view and scatter plot for this combined data
are shown below, along with the summary of joint sets.

Similar to the individual borehole stereonets, overburden rock beddings have a

large influence over this combined data. This is shown by the low dip angle of the
sole obvious joint set in the stereonet above.

2.4 Rock Mass Properties Statistical Analysis

A number of rock mass parameters are available for analysis from the borehole
database, including; rock quality designation (RQD), estimated strength from
point load testing, weathering and alteration. A few discontinuity characteristics
in the cores are also available, including; discontinuity type, shape, roughness,
infill and thickness. All data are with respect to rock mass types.
Analysed borehole data in the form of histograms can be viewed in Appendix A.
Summary of results is shown in Table x below. Only most prominent numbers
or characteristics are listed as a representative value. If there are more than
one prominent number, the more obvious one is listed first, followed by the
second. If the data appears to distribute among all or a few levels equally,
ambiguous is listed instead.
The symbols used in the table are explained in charts below.

2.5 Laboratory Data Analysis

The laboratory data supplied highlights triaxial testing, direct shear testing and uniaxial
compressive strength (UCS) testing. Triaxial testing and direct shear testing will be
discussed in Chapter 3.
UCS for rock masses forms a substantial part of this geotechnical study. There are two
different source of information estimated average value by point load testing and UCS
testing (ultimate strength from stress-strain curve). Generally, UCS testing provides more
reliable results but are very limited only 8 rock mass samples were tested.

Figure 9 Laboratory UCS testing results

Thus, the estimated UCS values from point load testing are used for further analysis and
contingencies are considered. They are available for most of the rock mass types in the
deposit vicinity.
