Editorial
Welcome to the October edition of the Loddon Valley Link.
As we pass the Autumn equinox our main feature this month is the
Sherfield Show. After 50 years it can rightly be called a fixture on the local
calendar and we can hopefully, with the continued support of all the
residents, look forward to many more. Start planning for next year.

Dear Friends
There is, by and large a vein of
generosity running through the people of
our nation. A recent Charities Aid
Foundation survey says that eight out of ten
people (79%) participated in at least one
charitable giving or social action activity in a
12-month period with a figure of 10.6
billion given by UK adults in 2014. That
response to appeals is commendable
though as an average it is still relatively low
per individual. Nevertheless, it is solidly
there.
What I find myself interested in,
though, are our motives for giving and the
criteria we employ to determine the amount
we give. A book by past Archbishop of
Canterbury, George Carey, and his
journalist son, Andrew Carey, entitled We
dont do God, charts the growing
secularisation of a society that believes that
it no longer needs God or for that matter
faith, yet fails to see that the whole
foundation of its rule of law and its way of
life has flowed from Judeo-Christian
principles and values. So too have its
charitable foundations and traditions, which
are the obedient out-working of faith in God.
Whatever negative aspects of the
church there are (and there are many,
simply because we are only human) there
are countless examples in the last 300
years of the selfless generosity of poor
Christians and rich Christian philanthropists
alike who have radically altered the shape
of the social landscape because they
believed in Gods rule of love and
generosity, which brings wholeness,
healing, human dignity, equality, justice and
mercy, respect for life and so on. We all
know how that played out in the areas of
slavery, healthcare, unions, education,
hospitals, care homes, orphanages,
hospices etc.
With Harvest Festivals in progress
Christians are called again to live out the
generosity of God by being people of
generosity. The Christian motive for giving
is supposed to flow from their

understanding of a God
who gave and gives
everything for us, and of his
Son, Jesus, who gave his
life for us and calls us to
begin an experience of new
life here on earth. Even if
we have no Christian faith we ought really
to be motivated by the relative wealth we
have compared to many in this world. My
experience is that being human, whether
Christian or not, most have an instinct for
preservation and selfishness that needs to
be overcome in order to share the worlds
resources more fairly, because it sure isnt
fair now!
One of the most challenging sentences in
the Bible, with reference to giving, is in 2
Corinthians 8 v 2. About the poverty
stricken Macedonian church at that time,
the Apostle Paul describes their attitude to
giving, Out of the most severe trial, their
overflowing joy and their extreme poverty
welled up in rich generosity. This
description of how to give challenges us to
give more sacrificially from what we have
and not simply from what we have left over.
Try some radical giving this harvest.
Experience the blessing of giving to those in
need by going without something you just
fancy rather than need.
You will be blessed! God bless you all.

A New Dean For Winchester Cathedral

Dear friends

embracing the use of social media.

Im very pleased to tell you that Downing

Street announced that The Queen has
approved the appointment of The Very
Revd Catherine Ogle as the next Dean of
Winchester. Her appointment follows the
retirement of The Very Revd James Atwell
earlier this year.

Catherines focus and passion for mission

therefore makes her an ideal fit at a time
when we are beginning to make
Winchester a more mission-shaped
Diocese. Catherine will enrich Cathedral
life with her many gifts and I look forward
to working closely with her.

Catherine is to take
up her position next
February. She will
be bringing to
Winchester her
years of experience
promoting the
mission of the
Church and
reaching out to
different communities and faiths. Her work
has also included innovative collaborations
with local artists to promote engagement
with communities across the city and she
has also overseen Birmingham Cathedral

Her appointment as Dean of Winchester is

an excellent one for the Cathedral, for the
city and for the Diocese more broadly.

Hello to all members of the Sherfield

community.

My Name is Glen Golding and as of

the 1st September 2016 I became the
Executive Headteacher of Bramley
CE Primary School.
I feel very privileged to do a job that I
love. I chose a career in education,
like many teachers, due to having a
desire to learn and to create in others
a desire to acquire new skills and
new knowledge in order for them to
have self-belief, be happy and make
a difference to the world.
I have been working within
Hampshire Education for 17 years,
12 of which have been based in the
Tadley area. I have worked across a
range of schools all within very
different contexts. In recent years, in
addition to being the Executive
Headteacher of the Bishopswood
Schools in Tadley, I have worked in
an advisory role for the Local
Authority supporting other schools
and colleagues across Hampshire.
Away from school I have a range of
interests; however since the birth of my 4th
son 4 weeks ago, all of these appear out of
reach for the foreseeable future. When I
am not changing nappies or watching
Peppa Pig I enjoy playing golf and football
and learning new cookery skills. However,
my main and favoured past time is being a
dad and it is from a parents perspective
that I strive to lead my schools. When
making decisions and evaluating practice I
always come back to the same question;
Would this be good enough for my own
children?

staff, we have greater financial security
and as a group of schools we can work
together to overcome the challenges that
all schools face. I am confident that
moving forward we will build on the
strengths that already exists within the
school to raise the standard of provision
even higher.

I very much look forward to welcoming you

into school for the various events that will
take place over the year.

Yours sincerely
For me forming a collaboration is a
positive, forward thinking choice. It is not a Mr G Golding
consolation prize or a way of overcoming
the Headteacher shortage that is affecting Executive Headteacher
schools nationally. I have always been a
huge advocate of sharing expertise and
resources across schools for the benefit of
all children. As part of a collaboration
Bramley now has access to a wider pool of
human resources; we have greater

arrangement between a company and their
employee. Not all companies offer matched

charity of their choice. Some organisations

Did you know that if you use Easy

online you could also raise a free donation
for Sherfield Park Community Association?
There are nearly 3,000 retailers on board
ready to make a donation, including
Amazon, John Lewis, Aviva, thetrainline,

penny extra! It's really simple and free to
join, sign up by visiting

time you shop online, simply go to

Our meeting for September was an outing

to Bordon Country Market.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves
and there were a few retail outlets, farm
shop, garden centre, coffee shop and a
carvery restaurant on the site. The
weather was reasonable though rather
cloudy but the sun eventually appeared
when we were on the way home.
At our meeting the previous month after a
discussion with the members, a decision
was taken that because of a dramatic drop
in the level of membership and because it
was felt that the village hall was too big, a

smaller venue would be better for out

meetings. Therefore we shall now meet in
the dining room at the Four Horseshoes
1:30pm as usual. The speaker is Debbie
Beatson from Collective Legal Solutions.

Latest Crime Statistics

Beat Report August 2016
Bramley and Sherfield (BL02)
Burglaries:
Burglaries are a Local Beat Priority across
Basingstoke. 4 reported burglaries reported
this month. Three were to sheds and one to
a dwelling. The dwelling burglary is where
offender(s) managed to enter a property
and steal a mobile phone and iPad. Please
ensure that your doors and windows are
locked when you are leaving your property
unattended.
Please mark your valuables in some way
with your post code or take a picture of
them and any distinguishing marks in case
they are recovered by Police, who will then
be able to return them
Anti Social Behaviour:
There have been 17 reports of ASB this
month. That is an increase of 3 reported
incidents over the last month. Hopefully we
will see a decrease from now as children
should be returning to school.
I have reports of youths using catapults in
and around Bramley. There does not
appear to be anywhere specifically targeted
however, occurrences seem to gravitate
around the areas with close access to the
cinder track. If you see any youths with
catapults in Bramley please call us on 101
so I am aware of where it is going on. If we
get no reports, I do not see a problem and
therefore cannot try and fix said problem.

Suspicious Incidents:
There have been 7 suspicious vehicle/
person reports.

receive a letter stating that a very distant
family member whom you had no
knowledge even existed has passed away
and left a substantial amount of money in
their will. You will be asked to contact a
number to process the claim which may
cost you a lot of money. After you have
made contact the company will inform you

that the funds have been frozen and in

order to release them you will have to pay a
fee of anything from 100 to 10,000+, if
you pay this money, you will not receive
anything . The company may also recontact you explaining there has been a
problem and requesting more money. THIS
IS A SCAM. If you receive any post like this,
please just ignore them, do not pay any
money to people you dont know (or even
people you think you know unless you are
fully aware of why you are paying it (normal
day to day bills.) If you see anything you
consider suspicious please call us on 101 to
report it. If there are any units free at the
time of the call, they will attend. I am
impressed of the detail people give to us.
The majority of the suspicious vehicles that
have been called in to us have been with a
full registration! It helps when we have this
as we can normally locate the owner.

We recently read The Boy Who Loved

Anne Frank, a fictional tale of what might
have happened if the boy, Peter Van Daan,
whose family hid with the Frank family at
the top of an Amsterdam warehouse, had
survived the war. With this in mind, we
decided to re-read the play The Diary of
Anne Frank. This is a dramatisation of the
book Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl,
which is the true story, written by Anne, of
the time spent hiding from the Nazis at the
top of the warehouse. The play was written
in 1954 and staged in London in 1956.

whatsoever from 8am
until 6pm. They cannot run water, speak
above a whisper, use the WC or move
unnecessarily. With eight people in a
confined space, there are the inevitable
tensions and arguments, which at times
can be quite amusing. But there is also the
palpable fear that they will be betrayed and
discovered. One Saturday there is a noise
below them and they decide to turn off their
lights. In trying to help, Peter falls off a
chair and the lamp crashes to the floor. Mr
Frank discovers that a thief has entered the
building and taken the cash box and the
radio, but ran away on hearing the noise.
The thief would know that there were
people in the building, almost certainly
Jews hiding, and eventually spill the beans.
This is in fact what actually happened.
After two years in hiding, the building was
stormed by the German police. They were
taken to a Dutch camp to start with, then
later to Auschwitz or Belsen. Only Otto
survived. We enjoyed reading this play
very much, even those of us who read it a
few years ago. Anne is quite a character
and would have made a success of her life
had she lived probably as a writer or
journalist. It made us realise how lucky our
generation has been in comparison.
Our next meeting is our annual Wine,
Women and Song evening on 6th October.

forgotten. It covers the problems of

administration and oversight, the stresses
and strains suffered by the new, untrained
and inexperienced officers who had to
make it work, and the sometimes
excruciating difficulty of getting every detail
sanctioned by London. It also details how
caring for the destitute and unfortunate
often depended on the personalities of the
people in charge, and how the Poor Law
Union became a whole new tier of local
government, still operating today.

Two Jewish families, the Franks with

daughters Margot and Anne, and the Van
Daans with son Peter, go into hiding to
escape being caught and sent to a
concentration camp. They are joined soon
after by a dentist, Mr Dussel. They are
helped by Miep Gies, a secretary in Ottos
business, and Mr Kraler, an elderly
Dutchman, who come up to their hiding
place each morning with food and news.
As the building is used as a workplace from
Monday to Friday, the families are not able

William Izzards service record has not
