Constraints, Trade-Offs, and Standards

Constraints
In this design, we have considered five major constraints that serve as main factors for the design. These constraints
are, Performance, Manufacturability, Safety, Economy, and Professional Ethics. It is the clients requirement that the
proponents of this design be able to improve their existing gearbox for future use.
Performance
For the final design, we have taken Performance as a priority in building the prototype. This involves having the
execution and operation of the design.

The gearbox must operate without the jamming of the gears.

Manufacturability
Also, proponents of this design have taken Manufacturability as a constraint. Manufacturability includes Availability,
Fabrication, and Requirement of Training.

The Availability is based on whether the equipment is available on the local market and its accessibility.
Fabrication is considered whether parts can be easily reproduced through specialized machine and

workshops.
The Requirement of Training focuses on the requirement of the operators to be fully knowledgeable on the
fields involved in this design.

Safety has also been taken into consideration in building this design. This involves Construction, Operation, and
probable Health Risks.

The Construction assesses whether the design is safe to construct in an existing community, and the

consideration of the safety of the workers in constructing the design.

The Operation focuses on the operational hazards the design can cause and experience in its operation in

the community and its environment.

The Health Risks focuses on whether the equipment is harmful to the settlements nearby its operational
area.

Economy
The proponents of this design also considered Economy as one of its constraints. Economy includes the Principal
Cost, the Operation Cost, and Maintenance Cost.

The Principal Cost covers the amount spent in building the design.
The Operation Cost focuses in the costs covering the operation of the equipment.
The Maintenance Cost includes the different miscellaneous costs that are essential for the equipment.

Lastly, the proponents have taken into consideration the Professional Ethics as a constraint of the design. This
includes whether the design have complied with existing standards and laws authored by different groups concerning
this design. Based on PSME Code of Ethics, the following rules have been considered.
