Last July 15, 2013, Monday, I was able to witness a part of a conference that was

about Unlimited Research Possibilities through Microscopy. I listened to Dr. Agnes R.

Pesimo who was scheduled 11:30 am. She was given 30 minutes to explain their research
and have a question and answer portion afterwards.
Dr. Agnes R. Pesimos research was Developing the Learning Outcomes of the
Students through Microscale Experiments in Chemistry. In a nutshell her research is about
how students would perform with the use of Microscale Experiments. She wanted to see how
it would affect the learning outcome of the students. Since microscale experiments are
cheaper, it would be able to save more money.
The aim of her research was to compare and describe the learning outcomes of
students, both exposed and not exposed to microscale experiments. It also dealt with the
learning experiences of the students who use microscale experiments, a factor which can be
considered in developing student learning outcomes. Her study used before and after tests
(pre-test and post-test) to determine the cognitive skills of the students. She also used
rubrics to find out the psychomotor and affective development of students. Open ended
questionnaires were also used in order for her to obtain the data regarding the experiences
gained by the students.
According to her data, the learning outcomes of the students who used microscale
experiements were excellent (highly satisfactory) in the cognitive domain and outstanding in
the psychomotor and affective domain. Compared to students who did not perform
microscale experiments, their learning outcomes are better. The learning experiences of the
students in performing microscale experiments facilitated the development of the students
learning outcomes.
Dr. Pesimos report is understandable. There are just some things I would comment about
with the way she was reporting and the powerpoint presentation itself. The powerpoint
presentation, is too wordy. I understand that it is a lengthy experiment, but people would be
able to understand it all the more if fewer words were seen. She couldve just explained
some of it instead of writing everything in the ppt. Also, the format of the powerpoint
presentation is not fixed with regards to the tables. Maybe, people would have understood
the tables better if it were not colliding with each other. Dr. Pesimos voice was loud enough
to be heard. She may be reading from the powerpoint presentation every now and then but
it was okay nevertheless.

Last July 15, 2013, Monday, I was able to witness a part of a conference that was
about Unlimited Research Possibilities through Microscopy. I listened to Mr. Richard Shin
who was scheduled 11:30 am. He was given 30 minutes to explain their research and have a
question and answer portion afterwards.
Mr. Richard Shins research was on Introduction of Micro CT (computed tomography)
and Images using Cooling Stage on Mini-SEM. His research was about Xray 3D CT Solution
being better in terms of it being non-destructive in analysis and inspection.
In his study, 2 types of computed tomography (CT) were introduced: Come beam CT
and SEC Oblique CT.The first one that was introduced was the Cone beam CT. The Cone
beam CT is good for analyses which are small sized (such as LED, capacitor, and condenser)
and round shaped materials.
The second that was introduced was SEC Oblique CT. SEC Oblique CT was said to be
the best optimized module for multilayered part. It was said that it perfectly focuses
automatically while tilting (60) and rotating (360) in order to inspect object and CT scan. In
using SEC Oblique CT, there is no need to cut the sample.
His report like the previous one is alright. His powerpoint presentation is good, clean
and understandable. It is wordy but not as wordy as the previous one. Mr. Shins
presentation also included some pictures and videos which explained his concept all the
more. His accent may be quite difficult to understand but people were still able to get the
idea.
There are many things one can learn from with this conference. In my part, I was able
to see researchers in action. I was able to have a look-see of what lies ahead. Being a
science major, I should be ready for these kinds of events. I should be able to present and
project not only myself but my research as a whole.
