Solution to Puzzle of the month

on page 5
All 13 missing Bl. units have been captured by the Wh. pawns b2, c2, d2, e2 &
f2 going eastward from the b-file to the
g-file. wPa2 and wPh2 did not change
column. So that bPh3 came from the
g-file with one capture (one wN), and
the original bPh7 also used one capture
(the other wN) to reach the g-file. In
order to get captured, both bPa7 and
bPb7 had to promote so that either
the WPa2 was captured on the a-file,
or it was promoted on a8 after Black
captured axb and promoted his a and
b Ps on b1.
This accounts for all 3 captures by
Black, so that Black's only potential last
move, -1. e5xf4, is not possible after
all. White played last. Last move was
necessarily -1. g2-g4 allowing Bl. to
avoid retropat by retracting bKg4-h4
wPf2-f3+ bKh4-g4 etc.
Therefore Black has the move (1. Bf2
mate?? is not allowed). Furthermore
Black has only one possible legal move:
1 ... f4xg3 ep mate, so that no stipulation is required.

A player can sometimes afford the

luxury of an inaccurate move, or even
a definite error, in the opening or middlegame without necessarily obtaining
a lost position. In the endgame ... an
error can be decisive, and we are rarely presented with a second chance.
- Paul Keres

Sasikiran triumphs at Benasque International

The 36th Benasque International
Tournament was held from 07-16
July 2016 in the cool and serene
town of Benasque in Huesca
province of Spain. GM Krishnan
Sasikiran had a fantastic tournament. He raced away to a
commanding 5.0/5, and then
settled for draws with GM Andrey
Baryshpolets (2551) and GM Yuriy
Kuzubov (2635). Then he reeled
off three more victories to claim
the first place undisputed.
Vidit becomes champion at Lake Sevan International
The 2016 Lake Sevan International Tournament began in Martuni, Armenia. The tourney is
a 10-player round-robin with an average rating of 2629. This was the third time GM Vidit
Santhosh Gujrathi was competing in the annual
invitational tournament. The first time he played,
back in 2014, he had won the tournament. Vidit
began comfortably with a win in the very first
round with the black pieces. After the third round,
Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, Vladislav Artemiev, Vidit
Gujrathi and Jan-Krzysztof Duda were leading
the table with 2.0/3. Vidit, though, settled for a
draw in the fourth round.
Last round: Duda vs. Vidit
Vidit and Sevian drew their respective games to enter the penultimate round as co-leaders,
and as befits such a scenario, they were facing each other!Vidit was clearly in the mood
to fight with the black pieces.Vidit got a stable advantage in the middlegame, but let the
advantage slip and was just two pawns down. The exciting game that lasted for almost
six hours saw an anti-climax in the end, when Sevian, two pawns up, lost on time! All Vidit
needed to do in the last round was hold the top seed Duda to a draw, which he did without
any issues. He won the Lake Sevan 2016 tournament with 6.0/9.
GM Shyamsundar wins Sant Mart International, Barcelona
One of the better events in the Catalan circuit is the Sant Mart International tournament
taking place in Barcelona, Spain. The average rating of the tourney was around 2200 Elo,
including 12 GMs and 18 IMs. With a total of 140 players, 73 of them titled, the tournament
24

was quite good for players searching for experience

and ratings. Indian GM Shyam Sundar had a dream
tournament scoring 8.0/9 points to become the champion. The top seed was Axel Bachmann of Paraguay.
GM Shyam Sundar took sole lead after six rounds scoring 5.5 points and never looked back. On his road to
victory, he won important games against Argentine GM
Peralta Fernando (2588) and GM Murali Karthikeyan. In
this tournament, Shyam had a magical performance
with the black pieces as he won five games with the
colour. Mainly, he played the Sicilian and Kings Indian
Defense systems which show that he loves playing
aggressive chess.
Czech Open chess festival 2016

Abhimayu Puranik finishes third

A handful of Indians has headed
to the Czech Republic to compete in the Czech Open 2016
chess festival. The main event
is the grandmaster tournament
that began on 22 July, but prior
to that, a rapid tournament was
held with a very strong field replete with titled players it was
FIDE rated and formed a part of
the ACP Tour.
The tournament was a 9-round rated swiss with the time control of 15 mins. for the game
+ 10 secs. per move. The field was led by Czech genius GM David Navara and Armenian
Sergei Movsesian. Both the stars had a bumpy tournament managing just 6.0/9 and 6.5/9
respectively.14 Indians, led by GM Neelotpal Das, were in the fray in this strong rapid
tournament. However, the proceedings were dominated by two 2200s!
Abhimanyu has been rising meteorically over the last couple of years. Despite his 2450+
classical rating, his rapid Elo was just 2227. One must note that the reason this is so is
because he was rated in the 2200s when he first played a rapid rating event! He has come
a long way since then. Perhaps, his opponents did not know this fact? He raced off to a
near-perfect 4.5/5, before losing to David Navara in the sixth round. He finished with 2.5/3
to finish third in the tournament with 7.0/9.

"At the Warsaw team tournament in

1935, the most surprising discovery was
a gangling, shy, 19-year-old Estonian.
Some had never heard of his country
before, nobody had ever heard of Keres.
But his play at top board was a wonder to
behold. Not merely because he performed
creditably in his first serious encounters
with the world's greatest; others have
done that too. It was his originality, verve,
and brilliance which astounded and delighted the chess world."

Masters of the past-67

Klaus Junge

Klaus Junge (1 January 1924 at Concepcin,

Chile 17 April 1945, at Welle, Germany) was
one of the youngest German chess masters. In
several tournaments during the 1940s he held
his own among the world's leading players. An
officer in the Wehrmacht, he died during the
Battle of Welle shortly before the end of World
War II.
Junge was born into a German Chilean family.
His father Otto was a strong chess player who
won the Chilean Chess Championshipin 1922. In
1928 his parents, together with their five sons,
returned to Germany.
On 1120 August 1939, he, along with Wolfgang
Unzicker (14 years old), Edith Keller (17), Rudolf
Kunath (15) and Karl Krbavic (17), played in
Frstenwalde (Jugendschachwoche) near Berlin.
In 1941, at the age of 17, Klaus Junge was considered one of the strongest players in Germany.
In 1941, he won the championship of Hamburg.
In May 1941, he won at Bad Elster (qualifying German championship). In August 1941,
he tied for first with Paul Felix Schmidt at Bad Oeynhausen (the eighth German Championship), although he lost a playoff match against Schmidt for the title at Bromberg (+0
3 =1). In October 1941, he took fourth place, behind Alexander Alekhine, Schmidt, and
Efim Bogoljubow, at Krakw/Warsaw(the second General Government chess tournament
championship).
In January 1942, Junge won the Dresden tournament. In 1942, he took second place,
behind Walter Niephaus, at Leipzig. In April 1942, he was second, behind Carl Carls, at
Rostock. In June 1942, he tied for thirdfourth with Schmidt, behind Alekhine and Paul
Keres, at the Salzburg 1942 chess tournament. In September, he took seventh place at
the Munich (the first European Championship), won by Alekhine. In October 1942, he took
second place, behind Alekhine, at Warsaw/Lublin/Krakw (the third General Government
championship). In December 1942, he tied for first with Alekhine at Prague (Duras Jubile, 60-jhrigen Jubilum). In 194243, he played in three correspondence tournaments,
beating among others Rudolf Teschner and Emil Joseph Diemer.
Klaus Junge, whose father had been a member of the Nazi Party since 1932, was an adherent of the National Socialist ideology. As a lieutenant of the Wehrmacht, refusing to
surrender, he died in combat against Allied troops on 17 April 1945 in the Battle of Welle
on the Lneburg Heath, close to Hamburg, three weeks before World War II ended. Paul
Schmidt wrote, had he not died in 1945 he would indeed have become a formidable
contender for the world championship. He was equally fond of combinatorial and positional play, and his style was completely mature even at age 18. My book Schachmeister
Denken! (Walter Rau Verlag, 1949) is dedicated to the memory of Klaus Junge. In 1946,
Regensburg hosted the first Klaus Junge Memorial. The event was won by Fedor Bohatirchuk, ahead of Elmrs Zemgalis, Wolfgang Unzicker, etc.
