F63 Series
Liquid Level Float Switch
For Closed Tank
Application
The F63 switches are for use in
closed tanks where a liquid level
is to be maintained. A change in
the liquid level will open or close
an electrical circuit.
The F63AC with the general
purpose enclosure is for use on
indoor tanks holding water or
other non-corrosive liquids at
temperatures between 32 and
250F (0 and 121C), and where
fluid temperatures are above the
ambient dewpoint. The F63BF,
with vaportight enclosure is rated
as Type 3R raintight. It is
recommended for use on indoor
or outdoor tanks handling liquids
which may be below dewpoint
temperature of 32F (0C) but not
below -20F (-29C) or the
freezing point of the liquid. It can
be used where ambient
temperatures do not exceed
180F (82C) or fall below -30F
(-34C). The maximum allowable
liquid pressure is 100 PSIG
(690 kPa). These float switches
should not be used with liquids
lighter than water.
! CAUTION: Do not use with

hazardous fluids or in
hazardous atmosphere.

All Series F63 float switches are

designed for use only as
operating controls. Where an
operating control failure would
result in personal injury, and/or
loss of property, it is the
responsibility of the installer to
add devices (safety, limit
controls) or systems (alarm,
supervisory systems) that
protect against, or warn of,
control failure.

Mounting

which has a vaportight
enclosure.

! CAUTION: Turn off the

liquid supply and relieve

pressure before installing or
removing the float switch.
Install the F63 in a 1 in. diameter
tank opening at the height where
liquid level is to be maintained,
use a wrench on the connector
flats to tighten. Do not tighten
by grasping the control
enclosure. Position the switch
with the arrow on the enclosure
pointing Up for proper
operation.

enclosure.

Wiring
! CAUTION: The float must

not touch the side of the

tank.

! CAUTION: Disconnect the

power supply before the

wiring connections are
made to avoid possible
electrical shock or damage
to the equipment.

Specifications
Make all wiring connections
using copper conductors only,
and in accordance with the
National Electrical Code and
local regulations.
The F63AC models have color
coded screw terminals. The
cover must be removed to make
wiring connections.
Note: Use terminal screws
furnished (8-32 x 1/4 in. binder
head). Substitution of other
1985 Johnson Controls, Inc.
Code No. LIT-121160

screws may cause problems in

making proper connections.

2 F63 Technical Bulletin

The F63BF models have color

coded wire leads. See Fig. 3 for
terminal identifications and
wiring hookup.

Checkout Procedure
When the liquid level rises in the
tank to the switch height, the red
(common) contact will Open to
the blue contact and Close to
the yellow contact. When the
liquid level falls approximately
1/2 in. (13 mm), the contact
action is reversed.
Before leaving the installation,
observe at least three complete
operating cycles to be sure that
all components are functioning
correctly.

Adjustment
The F63 switches are factory set
and sealed. Field adjustment is
not recommended.

Repairs and Replacement

Field repairs must not be made.
For a replacement float switch,
contact the nearest Johnson
Controls wholesaler.
