The number of bacterial meningitis cases is estimated at over one million per year
worldwide, with more than two thirds of
these occurring before 5 years of age.
Acute bacterial meningitis (ABM) in children continues to be associated with high
morbidity and mortality, despite progress
in terms of etiological therapy. In all countries, whether industrialized or developing,
