System Requirements for the


Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 19e, DVD-ROM

Besides the requirements listed below, this disc does not require any special in
stallation to run.
PC:
- Windows 7 or later
- DVD-ROM drive
- A web browser: Internet Explorer 8 or later, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
- QuickTime Player: http://www.apple.com/quicktime (only required for Internet E
xplorer 8)
- Adobe Reader: http://get.adobe.com/reader
Macintosh:
- OS X 10.8 or later
- DVD-ROM drive
- A web browser: Safari 7 or later, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
NOTE: It is strongly recommended that you run a recent version of a compatible b
rowser to use this product. To upgrade:
- Internet Explorer: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/
- Google Chrome: https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/
- Mozilla Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
- Safari: Mac OS X 10.8 or later notifies you when an update for Safari becomes
available. You may also manually check for updates by choosing App Store from th
e Apple menu and then clicking the Updates button in the toolbar at the top of t
he App Store window.

Getting Started
===============
Auto-start in Windows:
In order for the disc to auto-start, three basic requirements must be in place:
1. Your PC must allow auto-start (not supported by Mac OS X, see below).
2. Anti-virus programs must allow auto-start and pop-up functions of this disc.
3. Your computer must know what program to use to open an HTML file.
If the disc was inserted in the drive and did not auto-start, to get started qui
ckly:
PC Users:
Browse to your DVD-ROM drive (often D:) and double-click its icon. If this didn'
t launch the Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 19e, home page, doubleclick "start.html" within the root directory of the disc.
If a notification appears asking if you would like to allow active content, sele
ct YES.
If the page still does not open, follow the instructions below in the section:
"SETUP HTML FILE-TYPE ASSOCIATIONS IN WINDOWS"
Mac Users:

When the disc is in the drive, you'll see a disc icon appear on the desktop with
the name "HPIM_19e" below it.
Open this (double-click).
Double-click the file called "start.html".
Your browser will open to the Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 19e, h
ome page.

SETUP HTML FILE-TYPE ASSOCIATIONS IN WINDOWS


If you inserted the disc into your DVD-ROM drive and nothing happened, either yo
ur computer does not allow auto-start, or you need to configure your computer to
open HTML files with a browser. To do this:
1. Windows 8 users: Click the search icon (magnifying glass) in the Metro Interf
ace or use the keyboard shortcut: [Windows logo key] + [S], and type "Control Pa
nel". Choose Control Panel from the search results. Skip to step 3 below.
2. Windows 7 users: Go to START > Control Panel. Continue to step 3 below.
3. In the upper-right corner of the Control Panel window change "View by" to Cat
egory.
4. Click Programs, then Default Programs, and click "Associate a file type or pr
otocol with a program".
5. Scroll down to HTML and select that line in the list of file types.
6. Click Change Program.
7. In the list of programs, select a compatible browser.
8. Click OK.
After you have assigned a browser to open HTML files, eject and reinsert the dis
c. The page should automatically open.
If none of the compatible browsers appear in the "Open With" list, you do not ha
ve these programs installed, or are installed incorrectly. In this case, reinsta
ll Internet Explorer or one of the compatible browsers listed above.
Mac Users:
Follow these instructions to set up your system to use this disc:
Select the file "start.html" in the "HPIM_19e" disc and press [Command] + [I] to
Get Info on this file.
Click the "Open with" triangle to reveal its contents.
From the drop-down menu select Safari or other compatible browser listed above.
If you would like this change to apply to all HTML files click "Change All..." o
therwise close the info window.
After you have assigned a browser to open HTML files, double-click the "start.ht
ml" file.
