Project Basics 1-1

Overview

Project is the Geolog application for managing projects and performing multiwell processing on large
numbers of wells.
From Geolog Version 6.6 onwards, multiwell processing capabilities are also available in Geologs Well
application. In Well, several wells may be loaded into memory, processed, and then the changes saved or
discarded, as required. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that only a few wells be opened consecutively,
based on available memory. If large numbers of wells are to be processed simultaneously, use the Project
application (wells are not stored in memory, and data is immediately processed and saved to the database).
The following functionality is available within the Project application:
Project

Specify wells and sections to limit processing.

Within the "processing wells" subset, specify wells to be displayed using the Datum

Create well and section lists.

Specify datum settings to process a specific range of data.

Catalogs

Display and modify details of wells via the Well Catalog.

Manage sections via the Section Catalog.

Perform batch administration functions on large numbers of wells.

See Catalogs for further information.

Mapsheet

Map and manage wells.

Copy or include wells from other projects.

Display maps of well locations using a variety of projections and basemaps.

Display well deviation plots.

Include CGMs as background map displays of contours, boundaries, etc.

Graphically draw and display lines of section, and select wells that are displayed in cross section
using Geologs Section application.

See Mapsheet for further information.

Xplot

Crossplot logs or log expressions from multiple wells.

View and manipulate data in 3D format.

Paradigm Rock & Fluid Canvas 2009 | Epos 4.0

Project Basics 1-2

Perform regression analysis.

Calculate new logs using contractor log interpretation charts, Ternary diagrams, etc.

See Xplot for further information.

Frequency

Create and format histograms of a single log from multiple wells to display the data distribution
and cumulative frequency curve.

See Frequency for further information.

Artist

Graphically create or update CGM files.

See Artist for further information.

Loglan

Create and edit Loglan modules for log processing and database access within the Project
application.

See Loglan for further information.

General Tools

The General menu lists a variety of tools for performing operations such as using mathematical
expressions to evaluate new logs or automatically remove spikes in a log. These operations, and
many others in Geolog, start the Module Launcher to display a module for that operation. The
modules, which are provided with Geolog, or created using Loglan, are used for displaying,
creating, and editing data (for example, to show log values, edit output logs, etc.).

See General Tools for information on the individual tools found on the General menu, and Using
the Module Launcher on page 2-31 for information on using the Module Launcher.
Petrophysics

Perform petrophysical analyses on all or a specified number of wells. Environmental

corrections, formation evaluation and defining pay-zone characteristics are examples of some of
the functions available.

See Petrophysics for further information on all the available functionality.

Geology

Perform geological analyses, such as facies and/or permeability prediction from wireline logs,
facies propagation, dip analysis of array data, and image manipulation, on all or a specified
number of wells.

See Facimage, Geomage and Fuzzy Logic for further information on functionality.

Modules to import dips and tops data from the 3D geological model and modules to export data
such as well paths and well tops in a .csv file format, and surface picks in an .xyz file format.
These modules are detailed in "3D Model" on page 1-18.

See 3D Geological Model on page 4-1 for further information about the creation and maintenance
of the 3D geological module and GS Wells on page 4-1 for information on how it is utilized.

document views (e.g. a mapsheet, text view and crossplot).

Datum

Refer to Datum on page 2-5 for more information.

Limit / Specify for Processing

When the Project application is started; a blank Project window is opened with the Datum displayed, and
all wells in the currently open project are available for display and selection in the Datum, Catalogs and/or
on a mapsheet.
When you select Wells to Process from the menu you are selecting a set of wells from the project list of wells
to be available in the Datum - Wells List which can then be selected for displaying and processing.
During a Project working session, all, or only a selected set of, wells and/or sections in a project may be
specified for processing. Selecting wells/sections to process can be done using the:

menu - see "Menu Selection" on page 1-6;

Datum on page 2-5 - use the datum to limit the process wells displayed

Catalogs - see Wells to Process on page 1-18 and Sections to Process on page 2-6, or

Mapsheet - see Graphical Selection on page 1-7.

Well Lists
The Well List option is for saving selected wells as a group for quick retrieval for multiwell display and/or
processing. You can create any number of well lists for any one project. Note that these well lists can then
also be used in other Geolog applications to assist in quick retrieval (e.g. when searching for a well or wells
to open in the Well application).
To create and save a well list
1. Select Project > Well Lists... to display the Well List Maintenance dialog box.

2. Select the required wells (see Multiple Select Dialog Box on page 1-27 for information on using
this dialog box).

NOTE ALL is a Geolog reserved well list name and is the default list which includes all wells in
the currently open project, therefore, this name cannot be used for other lists.
3. Click on the Save As... button to display the Well List Save As dialog box.

4. Enter a name for the well list and click OK. The well list is saved to the projects wells
directory with the file extension .well_list.

Paradigm Rock & Fluid Canvas 2009 | Epos 4.0

Project Basics 1-12

To modify a well list

1. Select Project > Well Lists... to display the Well List Maintenance dialog box.
2. In the SELECTION section, locate and select the well list in the Well List field. (To clear the
Selection section, select the "blank" at the top of the list).

NOTE If you select a SOURCE well list first, and then select a SELECTION well list, wells are not
displayed in the SELECTION section if they do not exist in the SOURCE well list.
3. To remove wells, click on the well(s) and click on the Deselect

button.

4. To add wells, locate and select the well(s) from the SOURCE section and click on the Select
button.
5. Click on the Save button to save the modified well list with the same name.
Or
Click on the Save As... button to create a new well list.
To delete a well list
1. Select Project > Well Lists... to display the Well List Maintenance dialog box.
2. In the SELECTION section, locate and select the well list in the Well List field.
3. Click on the Delete... button.
4. Click OK to confirm the deletion.
Alternatively, Well Lists (and "Section Lists" on page 1-14) can be graphically selected and created from a
mapsheet (see Graphical Selection on page 1-7 for further details) or created using the Catalogs.

Project Basics 1-13

Section Lists
A Section List is used to save a group of selected sections to specify sections to process (see "Limit / Specify
for Processing" on page 1-6), or to display only that group of sections and their respective wells on a
Mapsheet.

NOTE ALL is a Geolog reserved section list name and is the default list which includes all sections
in the currently open project, therefore, this name cannot be used for other lists.
To create or modify a Section List
1. Select Project > Section Lists... to display the Section List Maintenance dialog box.
2. Create, modify and delete Section Lists as described for "Well Lists" on page 1-12.
