Details of the Incident at West Brook High School

On Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at approximately 3:40 pm, BISD Police Officers responded to a reported fight on
the campus of West Brook High School. As officers arrived, they saw a large group gathered and it appeared that
there had been some type of altercation. Officers spoke with witnesses who advised that a fight had just occurred.

Officers, detectives, and campus administration are still working to verify additional information but the following
is what we have been able to verify at this early point in the investigation. Yesterday, approximately forty-five
minutes after dismissal, an ongoing argument between two West Brook students escalated to a fight that resulted
in an attempted assault and two assaults.
A 16-year-old student and his 21-year old brother came on the campus and confronted a 17-year-old student.
During that confrontation, the 21-year-old brother of the 16-year-old student attempted to strike the 17-year-old
student with his vehicle, a dark colored sedan. The driver missed the student he was aiming for but struck another
15-year-old student. The student that was struck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by
Beaumont EMS. After striking the student, the two brothers exited their vehicle and began to fight with the 17year-old student and some of his friends. A teacher witnessed the fight and attempted to intervene to break it up.
At this time, officers were notified. As the officers responded, the crowd quickly began to disperse. During the
dispersal, an unidentified student drove off in the teachers SUV, which had been left unattended and running. As
Officers arrived, the driver of the stolen SUV jumped from it and took off running. That stolen SUV came to a rest
against another vehicle but there was no reported damage to either vehicle.
Officers and staff tended to the injured student and began to interview witnesses. The two brothers, who are now
suspects in an attempted aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, an aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, and
another aggravated assault, fled the area in their dark colored sedan prior to officers arriving.

At this point, West Brook administration has issued discipline to four of the five students involved in the
altercation. They are also in the process of administering discipline for the fifth student involved. BISD Police are
preparing criminal cases against the two brothers which, upon completion, will be presented to the Jefferson
County District Attorney Office for prosecution.
There are several videos of the incident circulating on social media. To our knowledge, these videos were recorded
by students who witnessed the incident. BISD is asking for any witnesses who have video to contact 617-7000.
After School Supervision
The safety and security of our students is our number one priority. We ask that parents and students follow the
district policy which requires that all students be picked up immediately following the conclusion of the school day
unless they are participating in a supervised after school activity. Students who are not participating in an activity
will be expected to leave the campus once school is dismissed.

At the end of the day, all students should either walk home, ride a bus or be picked up by a responsible adult.
Students loitering after school hours create the potential for an unsafe environment and are subject to disciplinary
consequences. In situations where parents fail to abide by the school dismissal schedule and pick students up
within a reasonable time frame, the campus has the authority to refer the concern to Child Protective Services.
Please work collaboratively with us to ensure the proper supervision of your child. On behalf of all of our students,
we will continue to communicate this expectation to ensure compliance.
