Heritage of Hazaribag ‘Blood Donation Awareness

donation was conducted by Jharkhand Voluntary Blood
Donors Association, Jamshedpur. (VBDA). Mr. Sunil
Mukherjee, (President, VBDA) Mr. S.K. Singh (Vice
President) and Mr. Pradeep Ghoshal (Secretary) presented a
lively and informative session. Through this they made the

Former teacher, Mrs. Indu
Kachhap, passed away on 15* Aug. She
had joined St. Xavier's on 1" Jan 1969
when Fr. M. J. Doyle, S. J. was the
Principal. She taught Hindi and Sanskrit in
Classes TV to VII and retired from service
in March 2002, after 34 years of devoted
service at St. Xavier's. Mrs. Indu Kachchap, was known to bea
woman of compassion and cheerfulness among her

Independence Day
Independence Day, was celebrated with the hoisting
of the National Flag by the Principal, patriotic singing and an
inspiring speech by Vice Captain, Adya Manu. Then everyone
moved to Magis Jubilee Auditorium fora cultural programme
honouring the freedom fighters and leaders of independent
India and depicting the cultural diversity of the country. The
students who received the highest marks in Std XII CBSE
exam 2016 in the Science (Riya Pandey) and Commerce
Stream (Akansha) were awarded the Fr. Micahel Mulheam
Memorial Scholarship. The best performing Std X student of
the previous academic year who continues in the school in Std
XI (Rashi Priya) received the Suniti Banerjee Scholarship.
The school used this occasion to felicitate HOXAn
volunteers and doctors (both alumni and others) in
recognition of their dedicated service to HOXA's free weekly

Medical Clinic. The Sunday clinic also offered free medical
checkup to the students of Classes 1-10 from April to August
by a general physician, dentist and an ophthalmologist. The
service activities of the LTS volunteers were also recognised
during the function.
On Internet Addiction
On August 31a research scholar from CIP, Ranchi,
Ms. Anshu Som made a presentation to the senior school
teachers on the use and misuse of internet by students. The
surveys conducted by her and others have brought to light
the fact that students venture into pom sites. She would
follow up this talk by speaking to parents and then to the
students on the problem and suggest means by which
students can be helped.

Inter Jesuit Schools Elocution and Speech Contest
The annual Inter Jesuit Schools Elocution and Speech
Contest was held in St. Xavier's, Sahibganj, on Aug 27°. Ten
Jesuit schools from West Bengal and Jharkhand participated.
‘The three students who represented our school was
accompanied Fr. Rosner Xalxo, S.J. Shashwat of VII B
secured the 9" position in the junior category elocution and
Shashwat of XA was placed the 5* in the senior elocution.
Priyanshu Vats of IXA secured the 5* position in extempore
speech. Our overall rank was 8", In essay writing the rank of
the school was 5* among the 16 participating schools.

Teachers’ Day
Students showed their affection, respect and gratitude
for their teachers through an endearing on-stage performance.
The added attraction this year was a commemoration of the
life and work of Mother Teresa on the occasion of her being
declared a saint by the Catholic Church. The audience on 5°
September included the staff and the students of Std VI-XII.
The younger students witnessed the same programme two
days earlier. A skit on Anne Sullivan, the teacher of Helen
Keller was much appreciated. Mr. Cyprian Surin, Binay
Mohan Choudhury and Mr. Naushad Zafar who completed 25
years and Mr. Ehsanul Haque who completed 15 years of
service in the school recently were honoured on the occasion.

‘Youth Parliament
A beautifully realistic Youth Parliament was
presented on 7° September by the students of Std VIII under
the guidance of the Social Science teachers Md Ziauddin and
Mr. Zamir Arif, The problem of child labour was first
presented by a role play to set up the context, Then our student
parliamentarians represented the diverse cultures and
languages of India. The debate was focused on child labour
as gleaned from the documents of the Ministry of
Parliamentary affairs. All the students and teachers of the high
school were kept spell-bound by the uplifting performance.
‘We Got Garbage!
Mr. Srikrishna, an environmental engineer from
Banglore, representing the
software company, Mindtree,
and Mr. Taufiq from the local
NGO Nayee Kiran addressed
the students of Std VI-XIT on
14° September on the issue of
waste management. A. pilot
project has been launched by
them in Ward No. 14 of
Hazaribag. The project
recognises the contribution of
the rag-pickers (now called
safai mitr) and helps them to
earn some income. Recycling
and composting are integral to P
their approach to waste

In Service Training of Teachers
Groups of teachers attended five different capacity
building programmes organized by CBSE Centre for
Excellence, Kolkata at various schools in Hazaribag during
this quarter. The themes included CCE, Life Skills,
Assessment of Speaking and Listening, and Gender
Sensitivit
Besides these, a two-day workshop (Sep 20-21) for all
the teachers on improving their language skills as the second
part of the workshop organized by Educational Initiatives,
Ahmedabad. The first part was held in May. The resource
persons were Ms. Sudeshna Roy and Ms. Ratnabali
Mukherjee, The focus this time was on grammar and
vocabulary.
‘The same team was joined by Ms Moushumi Sharma
to conduct a mid-year review of Mindspark with the Maths
teachers of Std Ili-VIII. They were introduced to the PTTR
(Plan-Teach-Track-Remediate) model of integration of
Mindspark with classroom practices.
‘Compassionate Outreach
The practice of sharing roti with the hungry through
roti bank continues the first week every month, The
Xaverian spirit of compassion and generosity was reflected
in the sum of @7 lacs 30 thousand collected by the students
and handed over to Educare, an agency that supports
children affected by thalassemia, Two months later the
students made another collection of @2 lacs 56 thousand. It
was given to the family of two students (brother and sister)
of St. Xavier's. Their father had been hospitalised for over a
