The Perfection Deception

Why Striving to Be Perfect Is Sabotaging Your Relationships,

Making You Sick, and Holding Your Happiness Hostage
JANE BLUESTEIN, PhD.
Most people mistakenly confuse perfectionism with a healthy
striving for excellencebut there is a big difference. One can
lead to great achievement (or at least great learning) and the
other is a psychological wound, the voice of the inner critic
that screams failure, loser, or fraud, regardless of the
authenticity of our efforts, progress, or success.
For those who are bound by the impossible demands of
perfectionism and those who feel bound by someone elses
perfectionistic standards, Dr. Bluestein emphatically shows
that perfectionism is not a good thing, and its not remotely
the same as doing your best. Through personal interviews
and the latest research, she explores how our culture fuels
the dysfunction, how perfectionism develops. Further, she
provides practical strategies for moving toward authenticity
and wholeness to live with confidence, self-fulfillment, and
happiness.

Connecting with Coincidence

The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity in Your Life
BERNARD D. BEITMAN, MD.
Weve all experienced or heard of surprising events and unexplainable coincidencesmoney that seems to come from
nowhere, a spontaneous idea that turns into a life-changing
solution, meeting our soulmate on a flight we werent supposed to take, or families being reunited by accident after
years of separation. Often these coincidences are explained
as being controlled by a higher power or pure chance. But for
the first time since Carl Jungs work, comes bold new research
that explains scientifically how we can identify, understand,
and perhaps even control the frequency of coincidences in our
everyday lives.
Where other books on coincidences tend to be theoretical,
inspirational, or story collections only, Beitmans book is the
first to provide a scientific understanding and practical ways in
which readers can use them in their own lives. He reveals:

How to Use the Most Profound Part of Your Brain Under Any
Kind of Stress
STEVEN STOSNY, PhD.
Success in work, love, and life depends on developing habits
that activate the powerful prefrontal cortex when we need it

revert to emotional habits we forged in toddlerhood: blame,
denial, avoidance, reacting to a jerk like a jerk, and turning
our connections into cold shouldersor worse.
Author Steven Stosny offers a ground-breaking formula for
building new, pressure-resistant habits. Based on research in
psychology, neurobiology, and anthropology, Stosny will show
anyone how to switch to the adult brain automatically when
things get tough and to soar above the impulse to make

The Practice

Simple Tools for Managing Stress, Finding Inner Peace, and

Uncovering Happiness
BARB SCHMIDT
The mind has a way of interfering with personal happiness,
often causing stress and doubt. Getting in touch with ones
inner source of peace and following its guidance over the
minds often-unfounded concerns requires training and
discipline. Knowing this truth intimately, Peaceful Mind
Peaceful Life Founder Barb Schmidt developed a three-part
spiritual discipline called The Practice. The Practice is a toolkit
to be used throughout the day to guide people who are
looking for confidence, less stress, and deeper meaning along
lifes path. These tools are a compilation of the great Truths
taught by authentic teachers and masters throughout the
centuries from various religious and spiritual traditions.
In the first three chapters of The Practice, readers are guided
through the daily routine: Waking Up, Living Present, and
Letting Go. Beginning with a morning meditation, a thread
of peace is followed over the course of the day through the
repetition of a sacred mantra, practicing focused attention,
reading for inspiration, and reflecting on the day. In the
concluding chapter, readers are provided with an opportunity
to deepen their experience of The Practice with engaging
exercises.

DAVID SIMON, MD. | INTRODUCTION BY DEEPAK
CHOPRA
In the spirit of both Eastern and Western traditions, David

have always wanted. Simon encourages readers to embrace
the power of commitment to create a life of greater peace,

There is a continuing hunger for Eastern philosophy and
spirituality among Westerners, and finally one of the Wests
top experts, who has been writing on, lecturing, teaching,

blended these principles with our core Western beliefs, giving

Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ

An Ignatian Spirituality for the New Millennium

JOSEPH A. TETLOW, SJ
Pope Francis has explicitly and repeatedly stated that
discernment is essential for anyone who is a follower of Jesus
Christ. But what, exactly, is discernment? Why must we do it?
When do we do it? How should we do it?
In Always Discerning, Joseph A. Tetlow, SJ, delves thoughtfully
into these questions and shares how lay Christians can
implement discernment into not only lifes big decisions but
also into the everyday, more mundane choices we constantly
find ourselves having to make. Guided by Scripture, Pope
Franciss own words, and Ignatian spirituality, Fr. Tetlow helps
us see that the dynamic interrelationship of head, heart, and
hands is crucial to the discernment process.

Station to Station

An Ignatian Journey through the Stations of the Cross

GARY JANSEN
Christians have asked, How should I respond to suffering?
And the answer to that question, believes Gary Jansen, can be
found by looking closely at the Passion of Jesus.
In Station to Station, Jansen uses the scriptural Way of the
Cross to focus our minds and hearts on Jesus anguish and
death. Walking through each station, we see the unique ways
in which Jesus responded to suffering, and we are challenged
to react similarly in our own struggles. Furthermore,
through various Ignatian exercises, Jansen encourages us
to imaginatively pray our way through the stations and to
gradually respond more as Jesus would when we are weighed
down by lifes burdens.

Taste & See

Experiencing the Goodness of God with Our Five Senses

GINNY KUBITZ MOYER

Taste & See

Most Catholics are quite comfortable with the idea of

encountering God with hearts and minds. Using the heart or
brain to sense Gods presence doesnt feel like a stretch.
But the notion of finding God with our five sensessight,
hearing, smell, touch, and tastecould seem strange indeed.
In fact, it might even seem worldly or downright wrong.
In Taste and See, Ginny Kubitz Moyer beautifully counters
this common misunderstanding. Using personal stories,
anecdotes, and Scripture, she demonstrates how the five
senses are a powerful, biblically based mean for us to
encounter God, not only as we practice our faith but also as
we participate in the messy splendor of daily life.

forever impacts peoples lives, and pushes them to reorder
priorities, reassess values, and perhaps rethink their faith. A

the crippling uncertainty and choose her best way forward.
Stripped chronicles Kings decision to carefully examine all

Saint Peter

WALKING
with

PETER

Flawed, Forgiven, and Faithful

STEPHEN J. BINZ
If St. Peter had moved in business or political circles, he
would have been forgotten millennia ago. In most areas of
life, those who make major mistakes are cast out, left to
languish in their failure. But Peter, who made more than one
major mistake while following Jesus, has been highly revered
within the Church since the days when Jesus walked with the
disciples.
In fact, in holding Peter up so high, we can easily miss the
essential lesson his life teaches us: that when flawed people
experience forgiveness through Jesus, they are freed and
empowered to be faithful followers of Christ. Author Stepgen
Binz helps us embrace the reality that God works through
broken human beings to accomplish truly beautiful things.

JEFF LAZARUS
In a world where everyone is barking but no ones listening,
this clever book reveals that the real antidote to our
communication faux paws can be learned from observing
our canine companions. True listening can enhance every
relationship in ones life, can transform broken associations
and inject new life into business and social interactions.
Our communications are expanding horizontally, but
shrinking vertically and were trading quality for quantity,
real for virtual. So, by listening like a dog, readers will find
renewed connection and a deeper sense of compassion,
companionship, and understanding with the people in their
lives.
Each chapter focuses on human behavior and compares that
with different aspects of canine behavior, applying it to the
world of business and personal communications.

JEFF LAZARUS
Dogtology
noun
1. The belief in Dog.
2. The system of rituals, practices, and behaviors engaged in
by Dogtologists.
Chew on this. As humans, we have a deep need to believe.
A need to relate to something greater and more ideal than
ourselves. Perhaps thats why so many millions believe in
Dog. Mans devotion to Dog has come to rival the great
-isms and -ologies of the world. This has gone way beyond
a hobby. We may not literally worship Dogs, but we come
pawfully close. This rabid reverence for Rover has a name:
Its called Dogtology. Dogtology is for the dog lover who has
bailed on a date because they didnt want Twinkles to be left
home alone, for the human whose dog owns a more festive
holiday wardrobe than they do, those whose pups dine on
free-range bison burgers while they live off ramen, or whose
smartphones have more photos of their dog than of the
humans in their family.

Arab Dawn

Arab Youth and the Demographic Dividend They Will Bring

BESSMA MOMANI
In the West, news about the Middle East is dominated by
an endless stream of reports and commentary about civil
war, sectarian violence, religious extremism, and economic
stagnation. But do they tell the full story? For instance, who
knew that university enrolment in the war-torn Palestinian
territories exceeds that of Hong Kong, or that more than a
third of Lebanese entrepreneurs are women?
Change is on its way in the Middle East, argues Bessma
Momani, and its cause is demographic. Today, one in five
Arabs is between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four. Young,
optimistic, and increasingly cosmopolitan, their generation
will shape the regions future. Drawing on interviews, surveys,
and other research conducted with young people in fifteen
countries across the Arab world, Momani describes the
passion for entrepreneurship, reform, and equality among
Arab youth. With insightful political analysis based on the
latest statistics and first-hand accounts, Arab Dawn is an
invigorating study of the Arab world and the transformative
power of youth.

Pumping Pure Adrenalin

The Case of the Missing Screenwriter Gary Devore

DON CRUTCHFIELD
On June 28, 1997, renowned Hollywood Screenwriter Gary Devore
was driving back from Santa Fe where he was working on a script
at a friends house, the actress Marsha Mason. At one a.m, a call
came in to Wendy Devore, Garys wife. He said simply, Im pumping
pure adrenalin, language the intelligence community uses as code
for Im in trouble. Thats the last time Wendy heard her husbands
voice. It was the last proof of life investigators had to go on.
In Pumping Pure Adrenalin, the reader takes the journey with
Crutchfield, turning over every lead and trying to make pieces of the
puzzle fit. How did Devores car end up in the Los Angeles canal a
year later? Why was his DNA sample lost in the mail? Why were
his hands cut off and replaced by hand bones over 100 years old?
Was he the victim of a carjacking in the Mojave dessert and they
ditched the car? Did Gary have dealings with drug cartels based on
his movie work? Would they want to see him dead? Or was Gary still
alive, one of the 900,000 people reported missing in America each
year? Lots of guys wanted to slip away from their lives and their
wives but Devore was in love. It didnt seem possible.
Crutchfield then hit upon what he believes to be the source of Garys
disappearance: A script about the secret war in Panama and the
American governments collusion with drug traffickers to fund the
war against the contras. This discovery had already cost one man
his life: famed journalist Gary Webb of the San Jose Mercury News
had covered the Noriega-Washington connection and ended up a
suicide, two bullets in his head. Devores script The Big Steal
a script he felt was his best detailed the U.S. involvement in this
secret war. All 120-pages were wiped away forever by, presumably,
Chase Brandon, the CIAs liaison to Hollywood.
Who killed Gary Devore? No one knows. Still others believe that
Gary is alive. The mystery continues but time has a way of giving
up secrets so Don Crutchfield will stay on the case as determined to
solve it.
