SCOPE:
This procedure describes the steps to be followed During Vacuum
Testing of the Weld joints. The Objective of the vacuum box
technique is to locate leak in a pressure boundary the can not be
directly pressurized. This is done by creating a differential
pressure across the local area causing bubble formation by
leaking gases.

RESPONSIBILITY
3.1

Shop supervisor or his designee shall be responsible for

preparation and performance of vacuum test including
surface preparation & cleaning etc.

3.2

Concerned QC Engineer or his designee shall be responsible

for monitoring the test and results of the test.

TEST EQUIPMENT
4.1

Vacuum Box (Appx. Size 6 Wide x 30 long)

4.2

Air Ejector / Vacuum Pump

4.3

Vacuum Gauge

4.4

Wire Brush

4.5

Soap Solution / Linseed Oil

4.6

Non-freezing Solution (if required)

PROCEDURE
5.1

The area to be tested shall be thoroughly cleaned by using

wire brush / other suitable means.

5.2

The bubble forming solution (soap Solution or linseed oil

etc.) Shall be evenly applied to the surface to be test by

procedure a film that does not break away from the area
under test and the bubbles shall not break rapidly due to
air drying or low surface tension.
5.3

Suitable non-freezing solution must be used when the

atmospheric temperature is so low as the cause freezing of
the bubble forming solution.

5.4

Vacuum box of convenient size containing a window on the

side opposite to the open bottom and equipped with a
suitable gasket to form a seal against test surface shall be
placed over the surface to be test. The open bottom of the
vacuum box shall be sealed against the tank surface by
means of gasket.

5.5

Suitable connections, valves, lighting and gauges etc. shall

be provided. The vacuum gauge sued shall have a range of
0 to 15 psi (absolute) or equivalent (e.g.0 to 760 mmHg).

5.6

The required partial vacuum at least of the order of 13 psi

(absolute press) or equivalent (e.g. 655 mmHg absolute
press.) shall be developed in the box by any convenient
method like vacuum pump, air ejector pumps etc.

5.7

The partial vacuum shall be retained for at least 10 seconds

examination time. The presence to continuous bubble
growth on the test surface shall be carefully observed
through the glass window and their locations noted. Such
points shall be marked & recorded.

5.8

Vacuum shall be released slowly by opening the valve &

vacuum box removed.

5.9 The leaking points (if any) shall be marked and recorded for
further action
5.10 An overlap of minimum 2 for adjacent placement of
vacuum box shall be used for each subsequent
examination.
5.11 The bubble forming solution shall be cleaned from the test
surface after testing.
