Answers to Questions:
1.)
Why are some parts of the dynamo made of highly permeable materials and
some are made of conductive material?
2.)
Is it possible to use the Revolving Field Stationary Armature construction for
DC dynamos?
3.)
Which part of the dynamo requires the greatest attention? Why?
Answers
1.) Magnetic permeability is related in physical terms most closely to electric
permittivity, it is probably easier to think of permeability as representing
'conductivity for magnetic flux. Materials with high permeabilities include iron and
the other ferromagnetic materials.
2.) No. Because in DC dynamos only the stationary field revolving armature is able to
use.
3.) A dynamo to run properly must be kept clean and dry. The parts that require the
greatest care are the commutators and brushes. If the commutator gets out of true
(out of adjustment), it must be turned down in a lathe. If it becomes wet, the
insulation of the armature and field coils will be injured or destroyed, because in
such a case resistance between the frame and the electrical part becomes low.
Discussions:
In this experiment, we are ask to know the basic parts of a
dynamo and their main
function. But before that, we also
watch a movie about the discovery of Faraday and its
Theories about the principle of motors and generators which was
discovered in the early 1800`s. Faraday discovered that when a conductor
is moving through a magnetic field,
Voltage is somewhat induced in the conductor. Also Michael Faraday
found out that the voltage induced in the conductor varies directly with
the rate at which the magnetic flux is being cut. This idea became the
basis of all the present-day generators. The dynamo have 12 parts
which are the Frame/Yoke, Field windings, Poles, Shaft, Commutator,
Armature Core, Armature windings, Brush Holder, Brush, Pigtail, Sprin
but of all this part there is one important which is the heart and it is
the Armature windings.
Conclusions:
We have study about the different parts of the Dynamo. The yoke
which is made of cast iron, it supports the poles and the field winding.
The Field windings which is made of copper it can produce excitation.
The poles which is made of cast iron/steel provides flux for the
production of the dynamo. The Shaft which is made of steel with high
tensile strength, the Commutator made in copper bars capable of
convert AC to DC or vice versa, Armature core made of laminated
sheets which supports the armature windings and it is the heart of the
dynamo which is made of insulated copper wires. We also studied
about the direction of the induced voltage in the conductor that can be
determined by applying the Flemings right hand rule which states that
With the right hand, place the three fingers namely the thumb, the
forefinger and the middle orthogonally with each other in such a
manner that the thumb is pointing to the direction of motion, the
forefinger to the direction of magnetic flux, then the middle finger
points to the direction of the induced voltage.
