Parts

of the Brain

The human brain is the main organ of the

human nervous system.
Located in the head, protected by skull
Size of the human brain comes from the
cerebral cortex
human cerebral cortex is a thick layer of
neural Issue that covers most of the brain

layer is folded in a way that increases the

amount of surface that can t into the volume
available.
The cortex is divided into four lobes:
FRONTAL
PARIETAL
TEMPORAL
OCCIPITAL

The brain is:

protected by the thick bones of the skull
suspended in cerebrospinal uid (CSF)
Isolated from the bloodstream by the Blood-
brain barrier (BBB)

The adult human brain weighs on average

about 1.31.4 kg (2.93.1 lb), or about 2% of
total body weight
composed of neurons, glial cells and blood
vessels

cerebral hemispheres (aka: cerebrum) - form

the largest part of the brain; located above
Underneath the cerebrum lies the brainstem
rear of the brain, beneath the cerebrum and
behind the brainstem, is the cerebellum

CorIcal Divisions

- cerebral cortex is nearly

symmetrical:
- le, and right hemispheres that
are approximate mirror images
of each other
- Each hemisphere is divided into four
lobes:
- FRONTAL
- PARIETAL
- TEMPORAL
- OCCIPITAL
- borders between lobes lie beneath
the sutures linking skull bones

Brain divided into le\ and right hemisphere by Longitudinal Fissure

Longitudinal Fissure aka: interhemispheric ssure separated right and le\
cerebral hemispheres
Each cerebral hemisphere is further divided by gyris/sulci/sulcus
Sylvian Fissure aka: lateral sulcus= separates frontal and parietal lobes
(superiorly) from the temporal lobe (inferiorly)
within the sylvian ssure is the insular cortex
Rolandic Fissure aka central sulcus = separates parietal lobe and frontal
lobe
**the foldings created by these gyri/sulci increases the amount of cerebral
cortex that can t in the skull
