CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND A REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

190 countries around the world. It is the largest installed operating system in
any mobile platform and growing fast every day. Millions of users power up their
Android devices every day and start looking for apps, games, and other digital
content. The researchers choose Android because the goal is for the proposed
application to reach a vast majority of phone users and Android specification fits
the description perfectly.
With all that being said, the researchers proposed to develop an android
based application that will help with the users daily schedule. ScheduLink, the
Online Scheduling Mobile Application will be developed for Android users to
keep track of their schedule and helps to organize the event. Potential users
need to input the required data such as name, address and all the other basic
information. When the event is occurring, you can know who already arrived
and who are not. It will have a Google map to know the way on how to get
there. It also features a messaging system to provide communication on the
participants. This mobile application is total tool that will not only help users
keep a track on their schedule, but also help organize the event, and thus will
help provide a responsible lifestyle.

out theoretical basis on the research being conducted and it will give out the
differences and similarities between the literature being reviewed and the
conducted research.
According to Kyle Bowen and Matthew D. Pistilli of Purdue University,
student device ownership was largely focused on two smart phone platforms,
Android and iPhone, which together represented 83% of survey responsesAndroid (43%) slightly edged iPhone(40%). It is important to note that while
iPhone represents a specific device, Android represents many different devices
and manufacturers. The survey did not explore specific devices or version
numbers.
This journal states that android is the most used operating system for
mobile devices because it is installed on many devices that are much cheaper
than the iPhone and thus proving that the researchers choice for the platform
is much better.
According to Margaret Buttler of Inovaspire, published in Published in
IEEE Pervasive Computing, The mobile phone landscape changed last year
with the introduction of smart phones running Android, a platform marketed by
Google. Android phones are the first credible threat to the iPhone market. Not
only did Google target the same consumers as iPhone, it also aimed to win the
hearts and minds of mobile application developers. On the basis of market
share and the number of available apps, Android is a success.

His statement of about how the Filipinos prefer the android operating
system gives the researchers an evidence that the preferred operating system
of the proposed application is much popular than the other mobile operating
system.

the proposed application will be mobile based compared to the day viewer that
is web based.
CSoftLab is an independent software developing company founded in
2000. The specialization of the company is creating utilities for managing a
personal information. Tools by CSoftLab help users to organize their daily work
and information more efficiently. In December, 2000 CSoftLab started activity in
the world-wide market, when releasing the C-Organizer, a personal information
manager. C-Organizer Professional edition remains the company's best-selling
title since the product launch in 2001. Originally developed in 2001, the
program has since enjoyed a wide following and support from both regular folks
and the media. C-Organizer Professional has been favorably reviewed in the
electronic version of very reputable PC Magazine and received dozens of
awards. The C-Organizer is for personal computers but the functionality is
somehow similar to the proposed system.
Google Calendar is a time-management web and mobile application
created by Google. It became available on April 13, 2006, and exited the beta
stage in July 2009. Users are required to have a Google Account in order to
use Google Calendar; however the mobile application supports synchronizing
with third party calendar services. Like the proposed application Google
calendar is also available in android but their difference is that Google calendar
10 | P a g e
is simply a calendar and does not organize when the event is happening (e.g.
know who already arrived, messaging) why the proposed application can.
Christopher Masser develop an android-based calendar called ToDo
Calendar Planner. It uses a powerful task list that supports batch operations. It
also has a fully scrollable calendar with daily, weekly, monthly and agenda view
and it can attach a Google map on the event. While the ToDo Calendar Planner
also boasts an android compatibility and also has similar features to the
proposed application, their difference is that the ToDo Calendar Planner lacks
the socialization that the proposed application has.
Jorte is a Japanese based application designed for smart phones and
tablets that combines the ease of use of a paper organizer with the handiness
of a portable device. Jorte has been developed after a detailed study of paper
organizers. As one day can be used any number of ways, the makers have
designed their Application keeping in mind ease of use. Jorte is also an
android-based application that has the functions of a normal calendar but unlike
the proposed application it doesnt have the messaging tools and the way to
organize the event.
New Calendar developed by KFSoftincludes most common calendar
functions, and let users manage their schedules easily. It can be use with
Google Calendar. It supports daily, weekly, monthly and yearly calendar
functions. It support public holiday for +30 regions. Voice reminders (TTS)
11 | P a g e
notify you the event with voice. You can also search the calendar. Lunar phase,
sunrise and sunset time are supported. Over 10 widgets are available, including
agenda and calendars, clock, world cities time, and sticky note with voice
recording feature, counter, Todo list, etc. The New Calendar application also
features android compatibility but the difference is it also lacks the feature to
organize when the event is occurring but some functionality is similar to the
proposed application.
SolCalendar is a globally-recognized calendar application with free
stickers that has topped millions of downloads on Android. This visuallyengaging, powerful piece of application will guide users to live a passionate life,
by providing effective time & task management tools and Infotainment.
SolCalendar is well known for its beautiful design and intuitive functions, and it
has been introduced by major IT medias such as TNW, engaged, and addictive
tips as one of the best alternatives for Google Calendar. Like the other
application it also runs on android
application is that it doesnt have the means to communicate when the event is
occurring thus leading to long waiting time of arrival.
Teamup Calendar looks similar to a Google Calendar or Outlook.
However, Teamup works differently, because it is designed for groups. Setting
up a Teamup Calendar starts with what is important for the group to stay
organized and keep everyone informed as determined by the calendar
12 | P a g e
administrator who represents the best interest of the group, followed by how
individual members of the group use the calendar for the benefits of the group.
It is built with simplicity. No user accounts are required. A calendar link is all
that is needed for anyone to use a Teamup Calendar. It is intuitive and easy to
use. This webpage based calendar does have the managerial capabilities of
the proposed application but their difference is their platforms.
Calendar + is a free, easy to use program scheduling calendar
application that helps managing calendar events and programs from your
Android device easier than ever. Calendar + automatically synchronizes with
your Google accounts and displays events, programs and plans with
customized views and options. Also, Calendar + provides you with the quick
add feature so users can add a new event or program easily on the go.
Calendar + similarly runs Android with proposed application but it lacks the
ability to organize the event when it is happening wherein the proposed
application, you can.
Acuity founder Gavin Zuchlinski found himself once upon a time in the
year 2006 or rather, thats where he found his dear mom, Kim, struggling with
her massage therapy business. Just as shed settle in to begin a session with a
client, the phone would ring, instantly birthing a pit in the bottom of her
stomach. Zuchlinski, an avid developer with a background in software
development, network security, and usability, decided there had to be a better

way. And so the very first beta version of Acuity Scheduling was born. Now,
small business owners like Kim, and big organizations and corporations alike,
never have to deal with deadly email & phone roulette ever again. Our
technology takes care of it on your behalf, letting clients, customers, employees
and people worldwide book, cancel and even reschedule appointments and
schedule meetings with you automatically, without you having to lift a finger. Or
be on call 24/7. Or even open your inbox. Acuitys features are somehow like
the proposed application but their difference that Acuity is a website and the
proposed application is in Android.
Appointy is a simple, functional and powerful scheduling software
designed to help you grow and manage your business. Appointy allows you to
accept appointments online, send automated email/ sms reminders, integrate
with social media and Google Calendar, accept online prepayments, create gift
cards, deals and much much more. No matter what the size of your business,
we have a plan designed specifically for you. Trusted by over 85,000+
businesses around the world. Our basic plan is free forever.

Mobile Application
The evaluation of existing similar application or websites gives the
researcher an overview about the existing application readily available in the
market. This will give the researchers an idea about the features that they lack
and put it in the proposed application giving it an edge in the competition.
Interviewing the respondents also gives the researcher ideas about what the
potential users need to an application.
The knowledge requirements cover all the necessary information in
order for the researchers to have an abstract idea on how to develop to
proposed application. The software requirements cover all the software needed
to develop the proposed application. And as for the hardware requirements
these pertains to the necessary equipment or gadgets needed for the
development of proposed application.
The program design describes the process where the flow and structure of
the program materializes. The development stage is where the coding of the
program starts. The evaluation stage is where the first prototype of the program
will be evaluated and decided whether it is acceptable or not. When it is not
acceptable it will go through revisions until it became better than previous
versions.
17 | P a g e
All these activities are done consecutively and through further refinement
in the revision part the proposed Android-Based Online Scheduling Mobile
Application will become acceptable.

remember certain memos that they needed to know that are vital to their health
or social being e.g. taking medicines, birthdays, anniversaries.
These three types of respondents differ from each other due to their
different needs in their schedule that the proposed application must fulfill.
19 | P a g e
Limitations
The proposed application will be develop primarily for android users.
Because of this the application will not be compatible to the other mobile
platforms.
The application is design only for mobile phones which means Personal
Computers and other gadgets are not supported.
Since the proposed application is design to be an online system. It needs
internet connectivity to fully utilize all its features.
Definition of Terms

CHAPTER 2
METHODOLOGY
22 | P a g e
In this chapter, the researchers will describe the methods used in the
research study. It will also be discussed here the involved processes in order to
provide solution to the general problem of this study.
Essentially, this chapter will discuss the type of Research Design that is
used by the researchers, the end user of the application or the respondents and
the use of Sampling Procedures in choosing them, Data Gathering instruments
and Validation, Data Gathering procedures and Statistical Analysis of Data.
Research Design
The research design determines the way on how to effectively address
the problem of the study. It refers to the chosen strategy to be implemented on
the different parts of the study in a way that is systematic and logical ensuring
effective solutions to the problems.
Survey Research Design. The researchers choose the survey research
design because of its effectiveness when used particularly in this study. In
survey research design, the researcher selects a sample of respondents from a
population and administers a standardized questionnaire to them.
The survey research design is the most effective way for assessing
opinions and trends. These statements are very important for the development
of this study because it basically relays the needs and the wants of the potential
users of the proposed application thus improving the user experience when the
23 | P a g e
Respondents
The respondents will be the end users of the proposed application. They
will also be the target to answer survey questions about the system and the
interviewee to validate the acquired answers are as follows.
Young Users (13 years old to 17 years old). Their role for the study is to
give the researchers an insight on how youth will benefit from the proposed
study. This particular age group primarily composes of students and youths.
They will give the researchers their opinion on what specific features they need
as a person who is studying.
24 | P a g e
Middle Users (18 years old to 54 years old). Their role for the study is to
give the researchers an insight on how the working class will benefit from the
proposed study. This particular age group primarily composes of individuals
who are currently working. They will provide knowledge to the researchers
about their opinion for a scheduling application and how will they benefit from it.
Old Users (55 years old above). Their role for the study is to give the
researchers an insight on how the elderly will benefit from the proposed study.
This particular age group primarily composes of individuals who are old. They
will give their opinions to the researchers about a scheduling application
making the proposed application useful to the elderly.
Research Locale
Research locale is a term that refers to a specified area and/or subject
that is being studied in a research project. The word locale simply means a
place or area; you use the word when you are talking about events or actions
connected to the place. So a research locale is simply the place where
research takes place.
Since the proposed application is generic, it has no locale. The proposed
application can be used by anyone.

Case Studies
Student Preferences for Mobile App Usage by Bowen and Pistilli,
published in 2012, a survey of student mobile application use was developed
and distributed during the fall 2011 semester at Purdue University. The survey
consisted of 32 questions broken into three sections: demographic information,
general mobile application usage and educational mobile application usage.
Android: Changing the Mobile Landscape by Margaret Butler,
published in IEEE Pervasive Computing (Volume: 10, Issue: 1) on March 2011,
it talks about how will android will dominate the mobile OPERATING SYSTEM
competition and change the landscape of mobile computing.
Journals
Effects of time-management practices on college grades by Britton and
Abraham, published on the Journal of Educational Psychology, it is a study
about the effects of having a time management on the academic performance
of the students.

classified by the age groups. The respondents are asked depending on their
activities, giving the researcher more information.
Validation of Instruments
Survey forms and questionnaires are abstracted by the adviser and
reconciled by the researcher, provided with the advisers feedback, given
advice and guidelines.

Otherwise, multiply each weight w by its matching value x, sum that all
up, and divide by the sum of weights:
Weighted
Mean = wx

Where:
x is the repeating value
w is the number of occurrences of x(weight)
This formula serves as the basis of the researchers in quantifying the
responses of the respondents to the questions.
Evaluation Criteria
The researchers used the FURPS+ Model is commonly used to identify
the most important feature of a product in measurable terms. It can help the
researchers to determine on what to prioritize to attain maximized users
satisfaction. The FURPS+ is an acronym which is stands for Functionality,
Usability, Reliability, Performance and Supportability.

CHAPTER 3
SURVEY RESULTS
33 | P a g e
In this chapter, the results gained by the conducted surveys done by the
researchers will be shown in graphs, provided for every questions included in
the survey. The researchers then elaborate how they will interpret their findings
about the survey.
By means of purposive sampling we only pick respondents by proper
judgment based on their attire and sound. We conduct the survey through age
divisions ranging from 13 17 years old as the young ones or students, 18 54
years old as the middle age ones like senior students and employees, and 55
years old and above or the elderlies. The researchers conducted the survey as
many as they can despite being picky. As discussed in chapter 1, Interviewing
the respondents also gives the researcher ideas about what the potential users
need to an application.

Figure 3.8 Are you willing to try a new mobile application in planning
an event or organizing your schedule?
Based on figure 3.8 89% of the respondents are not satisfied on what
they have used scheduling application, it means that there are a lot of features
to improve on their system that our proposed application will be providing in the
mere future. The researcher will test other related scheduling application to
determine further the improvements needed for the effectiveness of the
proposed application.
Figure

42 | P a g e
Figure 3.9 Which of the following features you think is the most
important in a mobile scheduler and event planner application?
Based on figure 3.9, 66% wanted a good looking user interface, it just
show that most of the respondents wanted attraction to their eyes when it
comes to their schedules and somehow the researcher needs to think of a
design that will fit to every users. Only 5% wanted it secured and user-friendly,
this shows that the scheduling application doesnt intend to include many
security questions but doesnt mean that the researchers will not make the
proposed system secured. The main purposed of this question as mention in
chapter 1 Interviewing the respondents also gives the researcher ideas about
what the potential users need to an application.
Generalization
The survey results will probably lead to the imagination of the
expected design of the proposed system. As the opinions of the respondents
deal a big help in giving us an insight on how will our system may look like. As
expected, most of the respondents weve conducted survey to, always keep
track of their schedules every day.
