2. 2. TALGO (Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoech ea Oriol, Goicoechea-Oriol light
articulated train), Alejandro Goicoechea and Jos Luis Oriol being the
founders of the company. Talgo Patents S.A. was first incorporated in 1942. In
March 2007 Talgo sold its Finnish rolling stock manufacturing subsidiary Talgo
Oy to its local management and other Finnish investors. The company, which
Talgo had owned for only seven years, reverted to its previous name of
Transtech Oy. The company spends 10 INTRODUCTION
3. 3. to 12 percent of revenues on research and development,[2] but the main
revenue source is the Spanish railway operator Renfe.[3] Talgo made an initial
public offering on the Bolsa de Madrid in May 2015. The IPO valued the
company at 1.27 billion.[4] In July 2015, Talgo stated its intention to ship a
Series 9 train to India at its own cost as a demonstration on the MumbaiDelhi rail route.
4. 4. Talgo trains are best known for their unconventional articulated railway
passenger car that uses a type similar to the Jacobs bogie that Talgo patented
in 1941, similar to the Robert Stephenson and Company trains.. The wheels
are mounted in pairs but not joined by an axleand the bogies are shared
between coaches rather than underneath individual coaches. This allows a
railway car to take a turn at higher speed with less swaying. As the coaches
are not mounted directly onto wheel bogies, the coaches are more easily
insulated from track noise. Talgo trains fitted with variable gauge DESIGN
5. 5. axles can change rail gauge - for instance at the 1,668 mm Iberian
gauge/1,435 mmstandard gauge at the Spanish-French border interchange.
Since the introduction of the Talgo Pendular in 1980, the train tilts naturally
inwards on curves, allowing it to run faster on curves without causing
discomfort to passengers. The carriage tilting system pivots around the top of
the suspension columns, which has the effect of partially cancelling out the
effects of the lateral acceleration when cornering.
6. 6. Here's all you need to know about the Talgo trains that we are about to
welcome on our railway tracks: 1. A Talgo 250 can run at the speed of 250
kmph. However, trials in India will only be conducted at 150- 160 kmph.
7. 7. 2. Its lighter trains can cut travel time by 30 per cent. In fact, Talgo trains
are expected to cover the Mumbai-Delhi stretch by 12 hours, unlike the
Rajdhani which takes 17 hours.
8. 8. 3. Talgo train coaches would save up to Rs 1 crore as compared to the LHB
coaches used in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains. They are also said to require
"less maintainance".
9. 9. 4. Unlike that for Japanese bullet trains, no major overhauling of tracks is
said to be required for running Talgo trains in India.

10.10. 5. Amenities like footrests, reading lights, tables, audio entertainment

control, etc. are provided for every individual seat. The trains also come with
monitors for video entertainment.
11.11. 6. Talgo trains have the technology to keep interiors pleasant even when
the temperature outside crosses 50 degree Celsius or drops below -20 degree
Celsius.
12.12. 7. Talgo's official website also promises showe units, in-house restaurant
and a cafeteria car for pasenger coaches.
13.13. 8. Talgo trains' can also reduce Railways' energy bill by 30 per cent, as its
"reduced weight and inalterability against atmospheric agents is translated
into lower energy consumption"
14.14. 9. Talgo 250 was the first high speed train to run in Central Asia. In
Uzbekistan, it runs on a daily basis
15.15. 10. Pretty and efficient, yes, but these fancy Talgo trains will make train
travel more expensive than it is now.
16.16. The progress of the Spanish rail company Talgo conducting trial runs of its
trains in existing Indian tracks : The trials recently conducted on Delhi
Mathura stretch have reported to touch a maximum speed of 180 kmph. From
1 August trials are planned to be done on Delhi-Kota- Vadodara-Mumbai track
and the distance is planned to be covered in almost 12 hours. Talgo coaches
are comparatively low in height as that of conventional coaches, thus are
more stable at higher speeds and are having tilt mechanism to have great
speed even on the curves, which predominantly exist in IR tracks.
17.17. The Spanish-made high speed trains, Talgo, will soon be pressed into
service but only after modifications to set them operational for Indian
platforms, UPDATED ON 282016 16:00 HRS Talgos nine-coach train, pulled
by an Indian Railways engine, departed from New Delhi at 19:55 hours on
Monday. Talgos train, owing to heavy rains enroute and point failure at
Mathura Junction, reached at 11:36 AM at Mumbai Central. Rajdhani Express
takes 15 hours and 50 minutes to traverse the distance between New Delhi
and Mumbai Central. If Talgos trial had gone as per schedule and without any
glitches, the train would have taken 12 hours 47 minutes for the journey, that
is approximately 3 hours less than Rajdhani.
18.18. Railways to start trial of Talgo trains on Delhi-Mumbai section from August
One 2016
19.19. NEW DELHI: Indian Railways will start the trials of Spanish-made Talgo
trains on the busiest Delhi-Mumbai section from August 1 after its successful
trials on Mathura-Palwal, where it achieved 180 kmph with fully loaded
capacity Thursday. The trials on Delhi-Mumbai section will be done at a
maximum speed of 150 kmph for nearly a month before a report is submitted
to Railway Board. At present Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani runs at an average

speed of 80 kmph covering 1388 km distance between the two cities in 16

hours. Talgo coaches can cut the journey time between Delhi and Mumbai by
4 hours 30 minutes. The primary results so far are similar to as claimed by
the company and we will make a detailed report on other technicalities. Next
week we will conduct trials of emergency braking distance system which
means
20.20. distance it takes to stop after applying emergency break at 160 kmph,
said a senior railway officer monitoring the trials. With Railways working to
increase speed of trains, Talgo trains can be a game changer if they succeed
in achieving claimed targets of running on existing rails at 180 kmph without
any major infrastructure changes. At present, Gatimaan Express is the fastest
train at 160 km/hr. The cost of a Talgo coach is Rs 5 crore and it requires
minimal infrastructure upgrade to run on Indian rails. Talgo envisages the
journey between Delhi and Mumbai can be completed in about 11 hour 40
minutes as compared to 16 hours 10 minutes at present. The Talgo coaches
can run on curved rails without decelerating speed. Besides reducing travel
time, Talgo's lighter trains consume 30 percent less energy. The Railways has
set up a Mobility Directorate to work on strategies to increase speed of
21.21. trains. Gatimaan Express India's first semi-high speed that clocks 160
kmph, was launched on the Delhi-Agra route in April.

27.27. TALGO's RD System, used to change automatically the distance between
the wheels of the axles, has been successfully used since 1968 in variablegauge axles of Talgo's trains. The TALGO RD System permits the automatic
change of the distance between the wheels of the railway vehicles in order to
make possible the running on different gauge tracks. The TALGO RD system
can be applied to different models of passenger coaches, power heads,
locomotives and freight wagons with full security and reliability, through
standard /Spanish and Russian / standard gauge Railway networks. The
change is made without human intervention while the train is running at low
speed (15 Km/h) through a special installation fixed on the track in
betweenthe tracks of different gauges. This is a unique and simple system
based on the elevation of the suspension above the Centre of Gravity of the
carbodies. This system is used to reduce the lateral forces that affect
passengerswhen traveling on curves. The carbodies act under the effect of
natural ( centrifugal ) forces without any loss of safety and comfort levels,

thanks to the steered wheels and the unique talgo wheelset assembly
characteristics... carbodies tilt towards the interior of the curves in direct
relationship to the travelling velocity... reducing the values of lateral forces
that act uponthe passengers... thereby enabling a 25% increase in travel
speed when traveling on a curve, provided that the tracks' resistance
characteristics are appropriate. ... reducing the levels of the wheel-rail
interactions allowing to increase speeds in curves without affecting safety.
