TITLE
A study on types of swiftlet bird house building system in Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION
Swiftlet is a type of birds similar to swallows, sparrows, and house swifts but they are not
closely related to each other (Ibrahim S.H et.al 2009). Swiftlet hotels have become
increasingly popular in the real estate industry today due to its high return on investment
(ROI) (Alias,et al 2013). In Malaysia, a lot of swiftlet hotels can be found in Sitiawan,
Seberang Perai, Teluk Intan, Nibong Tebal,Pekan, Kota Bahru, Rompin, Mentakab, Endau,
Mersing,Kota Tinggi, Muar, Johor Bahru, Klang and Rawang (Alias,et al 2013).The swiftlet
farming industry in Malaysia only started to gather momentum after the Asian Economic
Crisis of 1997-1998.During that period, many businesses, especially small to medium sized
business experienced hard times and a great number of the closed down throughout the
country.
Although the business can be highly profitable, there are many uncertainties and
uncontrollable factors that may contribute to the demise of a swiftlet farm business(Alias A.
et al 2013).The edible birds nest industry has been growing rapidly since 2008 with
Malaysia has been the second highest exporter after Indonesia with contribution of 20% in
the total market for EBN (Edible Bird Nest). As a new business that only step in to
Malaysia, therea are still shallow information about swiflet house in this country.
To build and manage swiflet bird house, many aspect have to be observed before the
construction of swiftlet bird house.Feedback from informant showed that the locations and
routes of birds are very important in determining the the success of swiftlet bird house
(Ibrahim et al 2015).In order to encourage these swiftlets to nest away from caves, people
have been building structures to create a caveliek atmosphere, conducive for the swiftlets to
breed(Mardiastuti et al 1997).The selection of location for manmade habitat for the siwftlet
houses is one of the very important factors for successful EBN industry(Idris et al 2013).
The important knowledge that contribute to the success of the industry is the right structure
of the building of swiftlet bird house (Ibrahim et al 2015).According to (Mulia,2008),the ideal
swiftlet bird house size is 20x40 and 30 feet tall. The available local swiftle population, their
feeding areas (garden, paddy field and garbage disposa areas),swiftlet track and areas that
are easy to control swiftlet house are the most important factors ( Idris,2013).

LITERATURE REVIEW
For

this

study,literature

review

have

been

collected

from

previous

research,website,guildelines,books and some journals.Aerodramus Fuciphagus is a

particular species of siwftlet that produces edible bird nest, only available in the Southeast
Asia region. It consist of 90%-95% of edible nest and 5%-10% of feathers and
purities(Lim,2006).The swiftlet edible nest have been a species of concern today due to high
market value of their nest that of building entirely out of saliva (Ibrahim,2009).In 18 th
century, the volume of trade was enormous, and early in 19 th century, about 9 millions nest
wieighting some 76 tonnes were imported into China each year (Lau et al 1994).
It is recorded that the earliest bird nests harvesting started in 960-1279 AD at the caves of
Niah,Sarawak. At that time the traders from China has takein the bird nests in the Niah
Caves in sacrifice to the emperor of China. In ancient times birds nest was known as dishes
for the king, but today anyone can enjoy the bird nest (Syazril,2012).Swiftlet are birds similar
to swallows, sparrows and house swifts but they are nor closely related to each other
(Merikle,1998).Currently,there are 24 species of swiftletd recorded in the word (Ibrahim et al
2009).
Swiftlet bird is a type of bird with the plumage usually dull, with shades of black, brown and
grey. The swiftlet birds mostly have quite similar appearance (Syazril,2012).The five most
common species of swiftlets found in Malaysia and the Borneo Island are Hydrochus
gigas,Collocalia

esculent

(White

Belly

Swifts),Cypsiurus

balasiensis

(Asian

Plam

Swift),Aerodramus maximus and Aerodramus fuciphagus (Ibrahim et al 2009).

Currently, the business of swiftlet farming essentially involves the conversion of peoplecentric buildings into buildings used to house and protect a certain species of swiftlets that
can only befound in the South East Asian region as well as the design and construction of
purpose-buildbuildings for the purposes of accommodating such swiftlet populations as well
(Syazril,2012).In Malaysia, almost 99% of all swiftlets farms are geared towards the
production of white edible birds nest (Calvin,2011).A suitable location for building swiftlet
houses is one of the very important factors for successful EBN industry(Idris et al 2013)

AIM
To provide a whole point of view of contemporary research in building system of swiftlet
house in Malaysia.
OBJECTIVES

To determine the most efficient building system to be constructed for swiftlet house in

Malaysia.
To examine the new building system technology for swiftlet bird house.
To identified and compared between types of building system of swiftlet bird house in
Malaysia.

RESEARCH QUESTION

How the efficiency of swiftlet bird house building system will help to generate income

for the entrepreneur?

What is the best method building system for swiftlet bird house?
Why we have to make a comparison between types of swiftlet bird house building
system in Malaysia?

PROBLEM STATEMENT

The challenges in determine the best method of constructing swiftlet bird house

building system.
The hazard problem will be on how to ensure that the swiflet bird house can generate
money to the entrepreneur and ensure the bird house can be sustain for a very long

time.
Its a very important matter to ensure the building system of swiftlet house can be
constructed in a short time. It;s a very crucial matter to be solved in Malaysia on how
to shorten the period construction time for swiftlet bird house.

SCOPE OF STUDY
The scope of research of this topic will be focusing on the best type of swiftlet bird house
building system to be constructed in Malaysia. The study also will be focusing the variety

types of swiftlet bird house building system in Malaysia. The scope will highlighted the
advantages of the efficiency swiftlet bird house building system in generating profit to the
enterpreneur. The study of this research will be concentrating on the area of swiftlet bird
house building house that is constructed in Malaysia

METHODOLOGY

For research methodology that involve in this topic consist of 6 stages overall. The first step
is to review literature for information communication and technology topic or findings. The
approach followed for the purpose of research could be titled as an exhaustive literature
review (Randolph,2009).Firstly,literature review that is being provided must be focusing on
the approach of that specific topic.Hence, our literature review will focus on outcomes of the
previous researches and studies and will not comment on the methodologies of the
researches reviewed.(Hosseini,R.M et al.2012).Secondly,data analysis were being applied in
the research methodology for the topic.Data collected will be analysed in three steps.First
steps,we will use demographic of the respondent for analyzation. We will use basic
descriptive statistic as for example frequency count and precentages. The next step,we will
analyse the frequeny of use of ICT applications by respondent, the approach used by
(Jacobsson and Linderoth 2012) was adopted. The last step will be using the relative
importance index of items.Thirdly, data collection has being used for the methodology of the
research. For the study of information communication and technology, they collected the data
through questionnaire. The process of questionnaire development and administration
involved three steps.First,a draft copy of the questionnairecwas developed,pilot-tested
through interviews with select group of of experts and senior practitioners in the construction
industry before it was revised based on the outcome of the content validity process (Yang,et
al 2012).Secondly,indicate the person that are willing to do the survey.Lastly,we will
nominate a respondent with requisite knowledge about the use of ICT,and capable providing
useful and reliable information. The fourth steps will be preparing the 1st draft for the report of
the study on impact and challenges of information communication and technology in
construction industry. (Winkler and McCueen,1984) stated that the paper must be written in
rough draft and the thesis argued, proved or supported with the information uncovered from
the sources.Lastly, researchers must make their procedures, findings, and conclusion for the
topics available in form of intelligible to others who may be interested. This involve clearly
andconcisely presenting the steps in the study in sufficient detail so that another person can
replicate it (Ary et.al 2007)
