Abstract

In this work, on the residual stress evaluation methods in composite laminates by using the
incremental hole drilling technique, a bibliographic study was performed to identify proposed
methods for such kind of calculations. According to an identified method, proposed by Sicot
et al (1), from the University of Troyes, France, a finite element analysis was performed to
determine the necessary calibration constants, which enable the calculation of the existing
residual stresses based on the in-depth strain relaxation curves, determined during the
application of Incremental Hole Drilling (IHD) to a specific composite laminate. It should be
emphasised that no standard procedures exist for these cases, such as the procedures
described in the American standard ASTM E-837.

A specific case of a carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite, with the stacking ply
sequence of

, was used in the present study. A finite element model, using APDL

scripting for ANSYS, was applied in two stages. First, the finite element analysis was
performed to determine the specific calibration constants, necessary for residual stress
calculation. In the following, the finite element analysis was conducted to simulate a uniform
residual stress state. Using the Sicots method, it was possible to determine the applied
uniform stress during the FEM simulation. This way, it was possible to validate the
developed FEM model.

In addition, using a specific experimental calibration procedure, were CRFP

specimen were subjected to a known homogeneous uniaxial stress state of around 74 MPa,
the selected calculation procedure (Sicots method), using the calibration constants
determined by FEM, was applied to verify if this stress state can be accurately determined.
The obtained results have shown a reasonable agreement, which is a good indication for the
further development of the IHD technique to be reliable applied for residual stress
determination in composite laminates.
