MANILA - Several provinces have been placed under signal number 1 as Typhoon

"Lawin" continues to barrel closer to Northern Luzon Tuesday, state weather bureau
PAGASA said.
Areas under signal number 1, which are Cagayan including Calayan group of islands,
Apayao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Northern
Aurora, Polillo Islands and Catanduanes, are expected to experience moderate to heavy
rains for 36 hours.
PAGASA warned of possible storm surges and waves measuring up to 4.5 meters along
the northern and western seaboards of Luzon, as well as the Eastern seaboards of Visayas.
"Lawin" has slightly accelerated as it moves in a west northwest direction. It was spotted
950 kilometers off Daet, Camarines Norte and was packing sustained winds of 185
kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, and gusts of up to 230 kph, PAGASA said in its
11 a.m. briefing.
It is expected to make landfall in Cagayan on Thursday, and exit the Philippine Area of
Responsibility by Friday.
