By: Sandra Lopez

THE MULTICULTURAL LESSON PLAN
1. Objectives:
Standard(s): G6.5.3- Provide examples of cultural identity communities or regions from
different perspectives.
C16.4.1- Identify their county, city, state and country
C.15.3.3- Introduce sources of information people use to form an opinion
RI.5.6- Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important
similarities and differences in the point of view they represent.
Objective(s): SWBAT: Illustrate a piece of artwork that should represent them on a personal
level. The artwork should represent each person individually, but as a whole class it should
describe and represent the diversity in the classroom.
Multicultural objective- SWBAT to recognize the diversity in the classroom. The purpose of this
activity is fro students to be able to acknowledge the diversity in the classroom based on facts
about each students provided by students individually. This goal of this activity is to provide a
clear understanding of the importance of acceptance.
Learning styles- This lesson will include visual learning and kinesthetic learning. Visually each
student will see the different cultures and the diversity in the classroom based on the different
artworks made by each student. Kinesthetically this lesson will include hands on procedures and
motor skills thatll make them create something that defines, and describes each person
individually. The motors kills include; cutting, writing, gluing, taping and etc.

2. Materials/Equipment: White paper or a handout of a paper hand. Writing utensils such

as; pencils, markers, crayons and colored pencils. Scissors and tape.

3. Instruction:

Teacher Procedures: First youll want to write DIVERSITY on the

board. Then youll want to calm quiet down the class. Then you should ask
a student to read the word, and then you can say the word and have the
class repeat it. You can ask the class if anyone knows what it means, let the
students answer. Provide the definition of the word by writing on the board
next to the word. Next read the definition of the word and after reading the
definition explain in words that students would better understand what it
means. Next try and provide examples of the Diversity in the classroom.
Then begin explaining the activity and give the examples.

Student Activities:

1. First youll get the white sheet of paper.

2. Secondly youll want to place your hand on the paper and begin to trace your
hand.
3. Thirdly youre going to pick a crayon of your choice and color the hand (explain
that theyll want to color it lightly because theyll be writing on it after they cut it).
4. Fourthly you are going to carefully grab your scissors and begin to cut the tracing
of your hand.
5. Next youll want to grab a marker or a writing utensil of your choice. You are
going to write something about yourself that makes you DIFFERENT from your
classmates (ex. Boy, girl, age, where youre from etc.) Remember that each
finger is to have a different fact about yourself, so in total there should be 5 facts
about each of you that make you different from your classmates.
6. Then when you are all finished youll throw your scraps away and sit quietly or
read quietly while everyone finishes. If any of your peers close around you are
struggling you can help out, but no more than one person helping another.
7. Then everyone should be back at his or her seats so that we can begin to share.

4. Closure:

Students will be asked to stand up, music will play and as the music
plays the students are to walk around. When the music is to stop the
student is to high five the nearest classmate to them and theyll be asked to
share their hand with them. After a few minutes of sharing the student
will be able to place their hand cutout anywhere in the room. By placing
their artwork in the classroom thatll define the diversity in the classroom
and that like the cutout hands are welcomed anywhere in the classroom, so
is every student in the class as well.

5. Assessment:

The activity will be graded based on whether or not the activity was
completed; Grading will be out of 10 points. Five points will be given, one
for each fact written, and five for sharing. The total will be ___out of 10.
