Imported (to the U.S.) Polydors had the upper portion of the label (trademark area) very neatly blacked out
(probably from the period Opera Discs ended, 1923, up to the electric era). Those that appear in this list are
in uniformly extraordinarily clean condition, many appearing as unplayed.
Z shellac is the highest grade surface material, used by Victor in the 1934-38 period. Usually a small Z
appears in the inner margin but sometimes not. Where Z shellac is used and there is no Z indication, I
have stated Z-type shellac. Close in terms of superior surfaces would be PW pressings, particularly those
in the 1938-39 period. Columbia used consistently superior shellac from 1923 until 1941.
Radio station copies. These records were stored in climate controlled situations and generally have not
become noisy as a result. It would seem to me that most of the crackly sound on HMVs and post-laminate
English Columbias is a result of humidity. Records affected by humidity and played with a fibre stylus are
even more noisy. There shouldnt be many of these in this catalogue. Crayon markings on radio station
copies (usually filing numbers and timing information) can be easily removed (most simply with a product
called Goo-Gone).
Russian records. It can be assumed that all Russian records are sung in Russian unless otherwise stated.
A word about grading. While a good percentage of the records in each catalogue are less than very rare, the
condition of most is unusually clean and as such the records are particularly desirable. Many may appear
to be original store stock and are graded just about 1-2 (just about new, scarcely any difference), cons. 2 (a
few lt. mks. or rubs). Copies graded 2 through 3 can be presumed to be excellent listening copies, the
differences between these and the higher gradings being superficial rubs and lt. mks. This is all outlined in
the grading at the opening of the booklet, but I wanted to be certain that all collectors are sure of what
theyre bidding on and (hopefully) will be receiving.

Bergamo, 1882-Buenos Aires, 1954. She
studied in Milano with Giuseppe Quiroli and
made her debut in 1903 as Giordanos Fedora.
This was followed by appearances in a number

a member of Hammersteins Manhattan Opera,
1909-10, and then she appeared at La Scala,
first in Simone Boccanegra with Battistini and
then creating the Marschallin in the Italian
premiere of Der Rosenkavalier. Her first Covent
Garden appearance was in 1912. Agostinellis
career continued principally in Italy and South
America through the 1920s. Her husband was

ROSE BAMPTON [c]. Lakewood, OH, 1907-Bryn Mawr, PA, 2007. Beginning as a coloratura
soprano, Bampton developed vocal problems early on, and her teachers directed her toward the
mezzo repertoire. Her operatic debut was as Siebel in Faust at the Chautauqua Opera in 1929. The
same year she began studies at Curtis with Horatio Connell and later Queena Mario and sang
mezzo roles with the Philadelphia Grand Opera. A performance in 1932 of the U.S. premiere of
Schnbergs Guerrelieder proved to be of exceptional help to her career. She garnered excellent
reviews, and Victor recorded the Carnegie Hall performances. Gatti-Casazza heard her recording
and summoned her for an audition. The panel of judges, all conductors, deemed her a soprano and
she was offered a debut as such. She declined for this reason, also feeling that she wasnt ready,
would be assigned only minor roles and felt that she would also be unsuited because of her taller
than average stature. She was guaranteed mezzo repertoire of some substance, and Gatti-Casazza
assuaged her other doubts. As a result, she made her debut as Laura in Gioconda in 1932 with
Ponselle in the title role. In 1937 she switched to soprano roles, but in one week in 1940 sang both
Amneris (replacing an indisposed colleague) and Aida. As a soprano, her greatest triumph
was probably Leonore in Fidelio in Toscaninis first operatic broadcast, 1944. She retired from the
Met in 1950 but continued her career in various other venues for at least a decade. One interesting
role was in the 1958 premiere of Paul Bowles opera Yerma, written for Libby Holman and
conducted by Carlos Surinach. Bampton played the mother of Holmans title role character,
although the difference in age between the two women was actually and visibly minimal. I saw the
production in Ithaca, NY, conducted by Carlos Surinach, where it received its last ten of twenty
performances. Some years later I met Rose Bampton and mentioned that I enjoyed her work in
Yerma. A young male hanger-on immediately jumped in and, sneering at me, pronounced with
great superiority that Miss Bampton was never in anything like that! She, in turn, gave him a
rather withering look along with a correction and was most kind to me from that point on.

she was a star at the Paris Opra, first appearing there as Gilda. While her specialty was
coloratura parts, she had great critical success at the Met (1936-38) singing the four soprano roles
in Les Contes dHoffmann, a first for New York.

Mme. CHARLES CAHIER [c]. Nashville, TN,
1870-Manhattan Beach, CA, 1951. Cahier
studied in Paris with Jean de Reszke, Victor Capoul
and Fidele Knig and, as Mrs. Morris Black, made
her debut in Nice, 1904, as Glucks Orfeo. There she
met and married Charles Cahier, a Swede of French
extraction (one wonders what happened to Morris
Black), and used his name professionally from then
on. She was mainly active in Germany and Austria,
as well as Budapest. Germany remained her home
base from 1904 until 1911, when she returned to
the U.S. Cahier sang as a guest of the Metropolitan
Opera in 1912 and with the Stockholm Opera from
1914-18. In 1906 she was engaged by Gustav
Mahler for the Vienna Opera to sing Carmen and
subsequently was often associated with Mahlers
music, singing in the premiere of his Lied von der
Erde in Munich, 1911. She taught and coached for
many years and gave master classes at Juilliard,
1925-26. Among those whom she helped through
teaching and advice over the years were Marian
Anderson and Lauritz Melchior. While not his
teacher, Cahier encouraged the youthful baritone
Melchior to become a tenor.

LON CAMPAGNOLA [t]. Marseille, 1875-1955. Campagnola made his debut in Marseille,
1903, as Vincent in Mireille. He subsequently appeared in Mons, Ghent and Antwerp, then
Toulouse, Tours and Nimes, making his Paris Opra debut in 1910 as Gounods Romo. He was
heard in the U.S. primarily with the Chicago Opera (beginning in 1913) and in 1916 he made his
La Scala debut. From then through 1926 most of his performances took place in France. He sang
principal tenor roles in a number of operas, including Rigoletto, Fedora, I Gioielli della Madonna,

ANNA CASE [s]. Clinton, NJ, 1889-New York City, 1984. Daughter of a blacksmith, Case
studied voice with Mme. Ohrstrm-Renard and made her debut in a small role in the Metropolitan
Operas New Theater presentation of Massenets Werther in 1909. She was Sophie in the first
Metropolitan performance of Der Rosenkavalier, but most of her roles were of less substance.
Being a beautiful woman with considerable personality, her great success was on the recital stage.
She toured throughout the United States and retired after marrying multi-millionaire Clarence
Mackay in 1929 with whom she had been acquainted for a number of years. Mr. Mackays
daughter via his first marriage had earlier wed Irving Berlin. I guess one would then consider Anna
Case to have been Berlins step-mother-in-law, although she was a year younger than the
composer.

develop his lyric tenor voice, Dani studied in Firenze
and made his debut at the Pagliano in Firenze, 1894,
as the Duke in Rigoletto. He was featured in various
Italian houses and in 1901 toured Australia with the
Williamson Opera. He subsequently appeared in New
York at the Met, singing Ernesto (Don Pasquale),
Alfredo (Traviata) and Canio, among other parts. In
subsequent years he sang in South America,
returned to the U.S. with a touring company, and
then spent the rest of his career primarily in Italy.
After his retirement, he settled in Australia and
opened a school of singing.

onstage, the result of a heart attack. One source mentions that to keep his throat lubricated he
was in the habit of drinking at least a pint of heavy cream daily, perhaps helpful to his voice but
likely not an aid to the rest of his mechanism.

BERNICE DE PASQUALI [s]. Boston, 1880-Omaha, 1925. Beginning her career as Bernice
James, de Pasquali studied voice in New York with Oscar Saenger. She wed Italian tenor Pietro
de Pasquali around the time of her debut in Rome, 1900 (as Gilda in Rigoletto although another
source quotes Marguerite in Faust). She was a popular artist in London, having appeared in opera
at Covent Garden and in concert with her husband. Her Metropolitan Opera debut was in 1910 as
Violetta in La Traviata. In addition she appeared with the Chicago Opera. A clipping from January
3, 1925 stated that de Pasquale was chosen to create the title role in the new opera, St. Cecilia, by
Mons. Refice, which will have its world premiere at the Costanzi Theater in Rome next spring
[i.e. 1926]. Costumed pictures exist of De Pasquali apparently in preparation for the role. She
died, however, the same year of pneumonia in Omaha, Nebraska, during a vaudeville tour on the
Orpheum Circuit. Likely as a result, plans for the premiere of St. Cecilia (completed in 1923) were
shelved until Claudia Muzio took a great interest in the work. It was she who finally created the
title role (Rome, 1934).

Reyers Sigurd (1884). At the Paris Opra she sang Dalila in the world operatic premiere of SaintSaens Samson et Dalila and in 1900 created the Mother in Charpentiers Louise. Her husband,
Jhin, was a noted conductor. Deschamps-Jhin recorded only four sides for Odon and five twominute cylinders for Edison.

Born Kittl, she took the name of her teacher,
Marie Loewe-Destinn, in appreciation. Her
debut was at the Kroll Opera in Berlin, 1898, as
Santuzza and in Bayreuth, 1901, she was
acclaimed for her singing of Senta in The Flying
Dutchman. She was a leading soprano for a
number of seasons at both Covent Garden and
the Metropolitan. At the former she was
celebrated in many parts, including Cio-CioSan, Donna Anna and Tatiana in the 1906
Covent Garden premiere of Tschakowskys
Eugen Onegin (with baritone Mattia Battistini in
the title role). Her many Met appearances (247
performances of 22 roles) included Amelia in
Verdis Un Ballo in Maschera and Minnie in the
1910 world premiere of Puccinis La Fanciulla
EMMY DESTINN
del West (with Caruso and Amato). The First
World War disrupted her career and she was
held under house arrest in her castle for the duration. A colorful personality, Destinn had a
bright-colored tattoo of a boa encircling her leg from the ankle to the upper thigh as Arthur
Rubinstein described it from personal recollection in his autobiography.

RITA FORNIA [s]. San Francisco, 1878-Paris, 1922. Born Regina Newman, she adopted part
of the name of her home state as a stage name. She made her debut as a coloratura soprano in
Germany but soon came to find her true voice was a mezzo soprano. After this transition she sang
both soprano and mezzo roles. She was a quick study and was often required to go on at the last
minute. Once in Germany, she sang both Elisabeth and Venus in the same performance of
Tannhuser. Early in her Metropolitan career (her debut was in 1907), she filled in at the last
minute for an ailing Emma Eames as Leonora in Il Trovatore and also for Marcella Sembrich as
Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, both to critical acclaim. For the latter performance she was
given twenty-four hours notice, which was helpful as she had previously sung Rosina only in
German and had to learn the role in Italian in one day (these performances, of course, without a
stage rehearsal). As a mezzo, she had particular success in 1911 as the Page in Gounods Romeo
et Juliette. She seemed content as her career progressed, however, to sing dozens of Suzukis to
Farrars Butterfly as well as various small roles in several languages. Suzuki with Farrar turned
out to be her final Met performance in 1922.
