Rome, Italy

If you are planning a vacation with a deep culture and plenty of history Rome Italy is
a great destination for any type of traveler. Rome is the capital of Italy and lies in
the middle of the country neighboring the Tyrrhenian Sea. Rome has a tremendous
amount of sights and restaurants to keep you captured in the deep Italian culture.

After all, when in Rome, do as Romans do.

The History of Rome is quite astonishing which makes for plenty of historical
attractions to visit during your travel. Using www.roman-empire.net I found a brief
history of the ancient city. Rome is known as the eternal city because it was
founded in the year 753 BC. Early Rome had seven kings that were eventually
overthrown in the year 510 BC. The new res publica which means matters of state
lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC. Many historical landmarks are still preserved
throughout Italy and in particular Rome, making it an attractive travel destination
for history buffs.
When thinking about places to visit in Rome it is easy to get lost in the amount of
historical destinations to visit in its deep cultural background. The first place most
people think about when visiting Rome is the ancient Colosseum. When visiting the
Colosseum you immediately feel the power and strength of the Roman Empire. The
Colosseum is an architectural masterpiece in its own. The Colosseum was
completed in the year 80. Todays architects are astonished by the Colosseum for
many reasons including its strength and integrity which makes it still standing to
this day, its perfect symmetry which was very uncommon in the year 80, and its
vast size with seating for 50,000 spectators. During your travel you can take tours
through the Colosseum which also has a museum within that offers a vast

knowledge of the stadium as well as the romans who lost their lives fighting within
its boundaries.

Anyone who has ever visited Rome says that you do not leave Rome without first
visiting the Vatican Museums. The Vatican Museum hosts a series of historical facts
as well as galleries in Vatican City. The Vatican Museums are also quite astonishing
in its vast size making it nearly impossible to view all of its historical documents,
maps, and pieces of art all in one visit. One of the Vatican Museums main
attractions is Michelangelos incredible Sistine Chapel (pictured below) ceiling
painted originally completed in 1512. Another great attraction is Leonardo Da

Vincis painting of the Catholic Saint Jerome. There are endless displays of artwork
and history within the Vatican that you need to see for yourself!

The historical attractions dont stop there as there are many other places within
Rome city limits including Ostia Antica. Ostia Antica is a preservation of Romes
ancient port which allows locals and tourists to explore its citys roots. Villa Dei

Quintili is incredibly preserved showing the beauty of early civilization built in year
151. This site was originally home to many Roman Empire war officials and much of
its old training grounds are preserved to this day. Another historical attraction in
Rome is Palatine Hill. Palatine Hill is one of the seven hills in Rome and features
houses from many important historical doctrines including the House of Augustus,
the House of Livia, and the home of several Roman Emperors. Lastly you must see
the Catacombs of San Callisto. The Catacombs features five floors and an estimated
half a million bodies. Some of these bodies include a number of Catholic Popes.

When visiting Rome it is important to engulf yourself in the culture of Italian food.
Rather than when in Rome, do as romans do, when in Rome, eat as romans eat. A
very popular restaurant is Gusto where you can eat true Italian Pizza which is quite
different than American Pizza. Another popular restaurant is Antico Arco where you
can dine with authentic Italian pasta. Lastly you should dine at Cantina Cantarini
where you are offered a wide selection of Italian sea foods.

Romes extensive beauty and history comes at a price. Luckily most hotels in
Romes city limits mimic the beauty of the city offering many beautiful locations to
stay. Prices of hotels vary from the Hotel Manfredi Suite at $179 a night to Hotel
Hassler at an astonishing $3,851 a night. However, Hotel Hassler is one of the
oldest hotels in Rome and preserves the beauty of old Rome. Using expedia.com I
was able to find round trip flights from Ohare International Airport to Rome for an
average of around $1,800 for a round trip flight.
Whether it is making a week-long trip to Rome or a long weekend trip while
traveling Europe Rome is a must visit. It is easy to get lost in the culture of the
history, sea food, and the humble accommodations from the locals. So get out
there, plan your trip, and do as romans do!
