Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using iPad Applications with Different
Display and Design Elements. Journal Of Autism & Develpmental disord.

2.
Would you define this study as primarily qualitative or quantitative?
Why? (5pts.)
I believe this study is primarily quantitative because the data can be measured.
The study uses 3 students, Derek, Liam and Addie with (ASD) autism spectrum
disorder. Apple iPads were used to measure how these students learned how to
operate different applications and designs.

3.What method of research was conducted? (10pts.)

I believe the educational research method used for this was Case Study
Research. A case study is usually done from 2 different research approaches.
Basically, a case study is an in depth study of a particular situation, in this
situation, ASD students.

4.How was the data collected for this study? (10pts.)

The data was collected using three male students with autism spectrum disorder.
All participants received medical diagnosis and had parental consent to
participate in the study. Materials used for this study were IPad, with the
following applications: Gotalk, Scene and heard, combined symbol and
photograph conditions. The percentage of correct responses per sessions were
recorded and used to determine mastery and rate of mastery. 80 % percent was
considered mastery but if the child did not reach mastery by the 45th session or
had 5 sessions of 50 % correct was stopped from continuing further.

5.What conclusions did the authors draw from this study? (10pts.)
The authors of the study concluded that their study was limited. Some questions
remain unanswered due to the performance in displays and design elements that
led to different performance results. There are also differences that my have related
the applications and observed error patterns. The combined display was a problem
and had a effect on all of the participants in this study.

6.
Describe your own personal reaction to this study. Do you think that it was
valid? Using your critical eye share whether or not you think this study is
important for the real school setting. (10pts.)
I enjoy reading about this study because I have a brother with autism and from a
very young age he was able to use technology with ease. He taught himself how to
use cd players and Dvd players. This study really brings the issue of special needs
children and their use of technology to light by trying to show people that
technology can really be an asset for teaching them. If educators can use
technology to help special needs students like ASD, then we should be demanding
more studies like this one. In school students can communicate and participate
using devices like the iPads and applications like the ones this study had. The only

thing I did not like was that the students had sessions in different settings. I would
have liked to see the three students in a more controlled setting.
