Subsea Pigging and Hydrostatic Testing Improves Efficiency and Reduces Cost

Subsea Pigging Unit (SPU)

The subsea pigging unit (SPU) has the capability to lter and
chemically treat the water that lls the pipeline during the
ooding operation. The water is continuously and autonomously
regulated and monitored during the ooding and pigging
operation without the need for umbilical cables or constant
attendance by a support vessel. The ability to independently
complete pipeline ooding and pigging operations oers distinct
advantages. Plus, it typically brings signicant value to oshore
projects by allowing more exible and ecient vessel usage.
Subsea Hydrostatic Testing Unit (SHU)
The subsea hydrostatic testing unit (SHU) provides a step-change
in the overall safety of subsea hydrostatic testing operations. This
unit allows hydrostatic testing operations to be completed entirely
on the seabed, moving the risks posed by high-pressure uids to a
location far removed from personnel. The SHU utilizes the power
available from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to operate
pumps within the SPU / SHU unit. The ROV is used to control the
rate of pressure increase in the pipeline by varying the ow rate
provided by the ROV-driven pressurizing pump. Once the
pipeline reaches its hydrostatic test pressure, the ROV may be
disconnected and used for other activities such as "ying the line"
for visual location and conrmation of any suspected leaks
indicated by the ongoing hydrostatic testing operations.
The hydrostatic pressure may be monitored by either an onboard
or external data logging system, either of which can monitor and
log up to four simultaneous hydrostatic testing operations. The
data logging systems can be adapted with acoustic technology to
transmit data to the surface through the use of telemetry systems.

HAL37479

Halliburtons subsea pigging unit and subsea hydrostatic testing

units are proven technologies for remote ooding and testing of
newly fabricated pipelines in water depths up to
13,123 ft (4,000 m).

Benefits
Safety
Personnel exposure to equipment containing
high-pressures uids (common during hydrostatic
testing operations) is eliminated.
Vessel Flexibility
The SPU operates independently of a host or support vessel.
This enables the vessel to continue with other operations
while the ooding operation is ongoing, maximizing vessel
utilization throughout the project.
Minimal Deck Space
The compact size of the SPU / SHU maximizes the vessel
deck space available for other activities. Only minimal deck
space is required during the transportation of the
equipment to and from the eld location.
Signicantly less space is required compared to
conventional pipeline ooding and testing equipment.
Minimal Personnel
Oshore personnel required for pipeline ooding and
hydrostatic testing operations are minimized, making room
for personnel needed for other vessel activities.
