Cityguide Bern

MySwitzerland.com/cityguide

Not many cities have managed to retain their historic features quite
as successfully as Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The old town of
Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and thanks to its 6 kilometres
of arcades - the locals refer to them as 'Lauben' - boasts on of the
longest weather-sheltered shopping promenades in Europe.

The medieval air of this city with its many fountains, sandstone facades, narrow streets and historic
towers is unique. The elevated Rose Garden above the Bear Park and the platform of the 101-metrehigh cathedral tower offer the best views of the old town round which the River Aare flows. The
former entrenchments and bastions drop down steeply to the river. The boutiques, bars and cabaret
stages of the old town, some of which are located in vaulted cellars, and the small street cafes
attract locals as well as a lot of tourists. Although Bern has a very good public transport network it is
best to explore the city centre on foot.
The Zentrum Paul Klee situated on the outskirts of the city houses the most comprehensive
collection of works by the artist Paul Klee. The Albert Einstein House bears testimony to the physics
genius' stay in Bern at the start of the 20th century and may ideally be combined with a visit to the
Einstein Museum. With the History Museum, Art Museum, Swiss Alpine Museum and
Communication Museum Bern offers a very varied range of exhibitions.

Bern is the seat of Switzerland's government. The Houses of Parliament (Bundeshaus) rise above
the city just a stone's throw away from the railway station. The doors to the Houses of Parliament
are open to visitors most of the time, and if you're lucky you might even bump into a member of
parliament in the streets of the city.
In summer the River Aare provides an opportunity for the ultimate bathing experience; very good,
experienced swimmers allow themselves to drift along in the clean Aare while enjoying a view of the
Houses of Parliament. The Botanical Gardens are also located along the river, as is the Dhlhlzli
Zoo and the old Matte district. Bern and bears, the cities heraldic beast, are inseparable. A visit to the
Bear Park, habitat of a family of bears, is a must-do.
In the squares of the city centre colourful weekly markets present their wares. The Onion Market
(Zibelemrit) which takes place on the fourth Monday in November is particularly worth visiting:
visitors to the traditional market dedicated to onions start pouring into the city in the early hours.
Set in the heart of Switzerland, Bern is the gateway to the Alps. The capital city may easily be
reached by car or by air via the Bern-Belp Airport and bus links to the city centre. Visitors who prefer
to travel by train may take advantage of the dense rail network with its direct connections to the
major European cities. Berns central location makes it the perfect base for overnight
accommodation and for excursions throughout Switzerland.

A perfect day in Bern

The Bernese may claim to be modest, but in fact they are extremely
proud most notably of their Old Town, built in a loop of the River
Aare, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you stroll
through this architectural gem, in the shelter of the medieval arcades
and past a host of historic treasures, you have to admit that the
Bernese are right: this city is simply extraordinary.

At the market

09:00

Early in the morning, the alleys of Berns Old Town come to life.
On various squares, markets selling vegetables, fruit or flowers
vie for the attentions of passers-by. Occasionally, a craft market
or flea market offers a splash of colour and an attractive
backdrop for the start of a new day.

Brunch at
Einsteins

10:00

The heart of a good breakfast is tasty bread and delicious coffee.

But its all relative. Which is why the caf in the Einstein House
at Kramgasse 49, in Berns UNESCO-protected Old Town, also
serves lots of other treats. Upstairs, on the second floor, is the
apartment where the physicist lived with his family during his
years in Bern and where he developed his famous Theory of
Relativity. Today, it houses a small but fascinating museum dedicated to him.

Bear essentials

11:30

Beside the Old Tram Depot stands the new BearPark good
news for the animals that feature on Berns coat of arms, for they
now have 6,000 square metres of terrain to roam. Visitors, too,
love the new park: footpaths lead through the site to the riverside
path. Incidentally, 2013 marks 500 years since the bears arrival;
throughout Bern, festivities will pay homage to the beasts that are
the symbol of the city.

On a bed of roses

223 varieties of roses, 200 different irises and 28 kinds of

rhododendron: this may sound like a fairytale garden, but it is
reality. Located near the BearPark high above the Old Town, the
Rose Garden also offers glorious views of Berns medieval
houses and the Aare. At the Restaurant Rosengarten, diners sit
on the terrace and enjoy new interpretations of traditional dishes,
as well as original and sophisticated Mediterranean-style creations.

Stylish shopping

13:30

Thanks to its six kilometres of arcades, Bern is in effect home to

one of the longest covered shopping promenades in Europe. This
has its benefits not only in rainy weather, but also in high
summer, when the shade is cool and pleasant. Speciality stores,
boutiques, galleries and emporia filled with curiosities all make for
happy window shopping. Berns museums, meanwhile, ensure
that the city has plenty to inspire culture fans, too.

For whom the bell

tolls

14:45

When you stroll through the Old Town, sooner or later you reach
the Zytglogge tower with its medieval clock, Berns most famous
landmark. Just before each hour, passers-by gather under the
clock to watch the charming mechanical figures come to life.
Four minutes before the stroke of the bell a cock crows, a
procession of musical bears sets off on its rounds and a jester
mischievously rings in the new hour in advance.

A short stroll away is the lively Bundesplatz, whose 26 fountains

represent the 26 Swiss cantons. Facing it stands the Federal
Palace, the Bundeshaus, with its distinctive cupola. Construction
began in 1852 and was completed in 1902. The seat of
Switzerlands government and federal parliament may be visited
from Monday to Saturday, free of charge.

you feel you are floating above the Aare: the perfect place for an

Love at first bite

19:30

Bern has plenty of surprises in store such as the one that

greets first-time visitors to the Restaurant Kornhauskeller.
Nothing about the doorway hints at the vast dining hall concealed
deep underground. The columns and late-Baroque vaulted ceiling
suggest a church-like setting, while the striking wall paintings,
warm colours, extensive use of wood and subdued lighting create
an elegant and sensuous atmosphere.

Zentrum Paul
Klee

With about 4,000 paintings (40% of his oeuvre) by the famous

painter Paul Klee, the Zentrum Paul Klee houses the largest
collection of its kind. The unusual building has a wave-like
structure and was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano.
Apart from art exhibitions, the Zentrum Paul Klee also offers a
platform for music, theatre, dance and literature.
The museum building was built by Italian architect Renzo Piano, a winner of several awards. He
created a green island from which three hills of steel and glass arise. These contain exhibition
space, a music and event hall, a children's museum as well as meeting and seminar rooms.
Klee's works are shown in a regularly changing, rotating selection of 120 to 150 works, always with
changing themes.
The Kindermuseum Creaviva is home to living creativity. Through expression of ones own ideas, the
techniques and themes of the great art masters emerge in a learning by doing and experiencing

Bern Cathedral

The three-aisled basilica without a transept towers above the

roofs of the old town is the largest religious building in
Switzerland. Construction started in 1421 with builders working
on this masterpiece over successive generations. The steeple
was only completed in 1893.
An outstanding feature is the main portal, where you can admire the depiction of the Last judgment the only image that was spared the iconoclasm of the Reformation. 344 steps above the entrance

The Parliament was built in accordance with the plans of the

Architect H. Auer. It was completed in 1902. In the central hall,
under the cupola between the two assembly rooms, there are
numerous symbolic depictions of Swiss history. After undergoing
extensive renovations, the seat of Swiss government has been
gleaming with new resplendence since May 2008. Guided tours
are available.
Bern was chosen as the Federal Capital of Switzerland in 1848. However, the Bundeshaus, with its
terrace and the Bundesplatz square, is much more than just the seat of the Swiss government. It is
also a crowd-puller, photo opportunity and a meeting place for young and old. On the "1848 - Bern as
capital city" tour, you will learn more about the 150-year history of the Federal Capital.
The Parliament House also opens its doors to regular guided tours of the premises. Outside the
building there is also much to see: The terrace is an inviting place to sit as you enjoy the views of the
Marzili public baths, the Aare, and the Gurten, Berns iconic local mountain. Of interest are the
Bundesplatz square, the fountain in summer, and a light show and ice rink in winter. There is also a
variety of events and the typical Bernese markets (Zibelemrit (onion market) and Christmas
markets, etc.).

Heiliggeistkirche
(Holy Spirit
Church)

The Heiliggeistkirche was built by Niklaus Schiltknecht, the town's

master mason, and inaugurated in 1729. It is located on the site
of what was previously known as the hospital church. The
Heiliggeistkirche is considered to be the most beautiful Protestant
baroque church in Switzerland. Richly furnished, the interior is
dominated by fourteen freestanding sandstone columns and the
pulpit in the northern part of the nave.

Kubus

In 2009, after the three years it took to build the Kubus, the
museum now had enough space to properly store and attractively
display its collection. This imposing building was designed by the
Biel architectural firm, :mlzd, with the company prevailing against
the other 15 competitors in the architectural competition that had
attracted a total of 120 applications.
The extension plan included a 1200m2 exhibition hall with walk-in roof terrace, floors allocated to
storerooms and office space for the "Bernisches Historisches Museum" as well as offices and a
library with reading room for the city archives. The exhibition hall is sunk into the ground: There is an
area on the roof that is accessible from the park and the entrance hall. To the rear, the office building
is sealed off in a fortress-like fashion.

Clock Tower
(Zytglogge)

The Clock Tower (Zytglogge) was the first western gate of the city
(1191 - 1256) and, with its famous astronomical calendar clock
built in 1530, is now one of the main attractions of Bern and the
oldest clocks in Switzerland.
The tower clock served as the master clock for the city of Bern
and hence set the standard. From there, the hours were measured which are indicated on the hour
stones of the cantons roads.
The hour chimes, the two tower clocks, the mechanical figures and the astronomical clock are all
driven by a common mechanism.
The exterior appearance of the tower is dominated by late-Baroque elements. The large dial is
framed by a fresco produced by Viktor Surbek in 1930.

The Kfigturm was the city's second western gateway. The tower
was built between 1256 and 1344, served as a prison between

was installed in 1691.

Baldachin

In 2008 Bern received a new, striking entrance to the Old Town.

Besides the remodeling of the existing construction, the
redesigning of the Christoffel underpass, the square's surface
and the guidance of the public transport, its most striking feature
is its expansive undulated glass roof - the Baldachin.
The Baldachin is a steel-glass-construction. With the transparent design, attention was paid to retain
the visibility of the Citizens Hospital and the Holy Ghost Church and still retain their effect as
outstanding historical buildings.
Not only as a beautiful appearance it also serves on rainy days as a protective roof.

PostFinance
Arena

Opened in 1967 as an open ice arena, the stadium was covered

in 1969 with an eye towards the upcoming World Ice Hockey
Championship.
HRS Real Estate Bern AG was commissioned to renovate the
stadium from 2007 - 2009. As an additional challenge, during the
reconstruction and completion the match activities of the SCB had to be guaranteed in time for the
Ice Hockey World Championships in 2009.
Besides the focus on improving the infrastructure and security, the building was enlarged by adding
7,500m2 of office and service space for Swiss Post and enhanced by the addition of a ground-level
outdoor area and an underground training hall.
Of special note is the huge standing room grandstand with a capacity of 10,422 people - the world's
largest in a hockey stadium.

In Thun, the Aare leaves the Alps and becomes an easily

It starts beneath the railway bridge, because the Uttiger

boaters.
From here you can pass through the wonderful river landscape at a more leisurely pace, but always
with care and attention. Although the Aare flows through a densely populated area here, it has
retained its surprisingly untamed character. Some of its water repeatedly disappears into numerous
side streams, creating one of Switzerland's largest water-meadow landscapes.
In Mnsingen and Muri there are two bathing areas, though landing is only practical in Muri.

Bern Bear Park

Since 1513 bears have been at home in Bern; until 1857 in the
town itself, then in the bear pit, and since 2009 in the new and
spacious bear park.
The site on the banks of the Aare stretches from the former bear
pit opposite the Old Town to the river. Thanks to a lift, the entire
facility is now wheelchair-friendly. The Bear Pit, which still exists and has been listed as a federal
cultural asset of national significance, remains at the bears' disposal.
Guests can go on a tour of the old bear pit as well as the new bear park. They get to see the new
park with its green hilly terrain, which includes caves and the "Bear Bath" in the Aare River. Guided
tours can also be booked during which you learn plenty of interesting things concerning the history of
the bear park - a peek behind the scenes.

Rose Garden

The Rose Garden is a large park with a wonderful view of the Old
Town and Aare Loop. The park is home to 220 different types of
roses, 200 types of irises and moor beds with 28 different types
of rhododendrons.
From 1765 to 1877 the Rose Garden served as a cemetery.
Since 1913 the Rose Garden has been a public park resplendent with the rich beauty of flowers and
a pond. From 1956 to 1962 the park was redesigned, introducing rhododendrons and azaleas as
well as an iris garden.
A pavilion and reading garden provide a place to relax. The restaurant Rosengarten is a great place
to while away the time, and it offers a view of the rows of houses in the Old Town.

mountain forests such as tree and palm ferns. The third show house is dedicated to the vegetation
found in the warm and dry climate of semi-deserts.

Eleven Fountains

Until a hundred years ago, the public fountain played a very

important role in the life of the city since it was the place of the
central water supply. The incomparably beautiful sight of the
medieval streets would be incomplete without the numerous
fountains whose colorful figures and columns enliven the grey
monotony of the long-stretched rows of facades.

Meret Oppenheim
Tower Fountain

The fountain by the artist Meret Oppenheim, who spent a part of

her life in Switzerland, stands eight meters high on the
Waisenhausplatz in Bern since 1983. A light installation at the top
and irrigation system with spiralling water channel that winds its
way around the concrete column are the key elements of this
work of art.
But what make the fountain truly unique are the plants and tuff deposits that thrive around the
column. In summer, when a cushion of moss and wild grasses cover the concrete, the fountain
looks like a big green monster, whereas in winter, when the ice and cold has its grip the column
reminds one of a butterfly in a cocoon. And Meret Oppenheim would be delighted to see such
transformations - particularly as she regarded the fountain as a symbol of life and growth.

Sculpture:
"Kopflos"
(Headless)

This sculpture by artist Luciano Andreani is one of several

sculptures that were created by different artists in the 80s.
The curious bronze statue was bought in 1986 for CHF 16,000 by
the city of Bern and then placed on the station square until 2007.
During the extensive renovations, the sculpture was kept in
storage. At the request of the people of Bern and after consultation with Luciano Andreani, "Kopflos
found a new home in 2009 - at the edge of the pavement at Casinoplatz.
What is the message being sent by this work of art on the roadside? A warning to keep your head as
you cross the street? Or does the sculpture simply reflect the mindless politics of the 80s? One
thing is certain: the bronze sculpture does attract attention and fascination.

The "Swiss"
throughtout the
world - The
balance of things

Situated near the Marzilibhnli, this sculpture is reminiscent of a

Japanese rock garden. Created by Bernese artist and blues
musician George Steinmann (1992), the five rock groups
symbolise the continents.
The stones actually come from places that bear the name of
Switzerland. This is usually because these places resemble Switzerland in some way or are linked
to Swiss immigrants. There are now yellow signs at these locations where the stones were removed
that show the distance to Switzerland.
Enjoy the harmonious effect of the sculpture that has been arranged according to the golden ratio.
