Introduction
Problem Statement
Magnetic field pulse generators have been used for various applications across many different
electrical engineering disciplines. Past designs have shown that it is possible to create pulsers
with relatively high power and speed. However, there is room for improvement in pulse strength,
rise/fall time, and overall efficiency.

Purpose of Project
The purpose of our project is to design and implement a circuit that generates a quicker, higher
power pulse while also improving efficiency and decreasing physical footprint. This would
provide a more practical way to use magnetic pulse generators in optical switching and higherscale applications such as TMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation.

Project Goals
The goals of this project are threefold:

1. Gain a deep, applicable, and robust understanding of magnetic pulse generator

concepts and circuit theory that will help us in our future careers and education.
2. Design a circuit that can generate a 500 Gauss magnetic field pulse with a rise
and fall time of at most, 10 nanoseconds.
3. Reduce the physical footprint of past designs.

Deliverables

The deliverables for our project will be divided between first semester and
second semester. Completing these according to our semester timeline will keep us on track to
achieve our goals by the end of the year (Spring 2017).
Fall 2016
Present functional circuit simulation that can generate a 500 gauss magnetic field pulsing at less
than 100 microseconds
Spring 2017
Build functional PCB of single-FET, present simulation data on improved/tweaked circuit to
improve rise/fall time and pulse power, and simulate/build double-FET model

Design
Past works
There is a senior design group had done the one-MOSFET circuit for project with the same
professor with us. They provided a lot of useful documents and messages for us to our project.
We had read a lot of related document and their project result in past weeks. We have had a
primary realization about what is our goal for this project. And we also used the multisim to
simulate the circuit which the previous group did, and we understand how it worked.

System Level Design

Comparing methods
In order to finish our project, we need to use several equipments and softwares. For the
equipments, the oscilloscope should be the most important partner for us during the project.
Soldering is also will be one of things we need to use frequently.
For the software, Multisim is our first software we would like to use. We need to import the
circuit we designed into the Multisim and find out that if the result is same with our expectation.
And we also need to use NI Ultiboard to design the layout of the actual circuit.

Project Requirement
Functional
In this project, we will design and solder a stable, compact, high frequency and strength
magnetic pulse generator. By the theorem, the circuit will send out a magnetic field with
minimum 500 Gauss at less than 100 microseconds by an inductor which is a coil. The circuit
that would use two MOSFETs to send out a stronger and faster magnetic pulse will be our next
goal. The final PCB would be in a dimension that is less than 3.5 *2. In addition, the circuit
power supply will be a 15V DC power and impulse generator.

Non-Functional
At the first, we will use NI Multisim and PSpice to simulate the circuit due to the convenience of
importing MOSFET file. By using the software to simulate the circuit, we could observe the
output whether match our goal or not. After we succeed in simulation, we will design our PCB on
NI Ultiboard and send out to manufacture a PCB for our project. We will use surface mount
components in our project because we can easily replace them by soldering on or off which can
help us to save money and time. But the inductor (coil) will be made by ourselves and solder on
the PCB. The inductor should be in a small scale in case of user accident. Both of the input and
output will be enclosed in insulating materials.

Challenges
Because of we have decided to use NI Multisim as the platform of our entire project. The first
challenge of our project is to completely make it clear that how to use NI Multisim to do the
correct simulating. We have to learn hot to import PSPICE into the Multisim. And use the skills
of Multisim flexible.
The second challenge for our team is to make a good communication with the advisor and past
team. Our first semester goal is to totally understand the single MOS-FET based circuit
designed by other team. So we need to learn many thing from them. This will help us a lot on
getting more knowledge and designing on our own single/double MOS-FET PCB as our final
goal. For this reason, communication is really a important work.
We also need to learn about the knowledges by ourselves, so the third challenge will be selflearning and self-practicing. Asking questions and thinking more to ourselves will help us
brainstorming which can rapidly improve our level of engineering skills.

Timeline
The project will follow a semester-based timeline. The final goal of our EE 491 project (Fall
2016) will be to have a functional single-FET PCB that achieves our desired specifications as
well as have a working simulation model for a double-FET design. These will be presented in
December 2016. Then, our EE 492 time (Spring 2017) will pick up where we left off and, ideally,
we will approach May 2017 with two functional circuits (one single-FET and one double-FET)
that show significant improvements on the foundational circuitry from past teams.
