Development of Visual Icons

Students chose a company or organization to
use to create a visual icon program. This first
section was spent focusing on Research of the
organization and of icon systems in place and
then creating a system of 20 icons.

The Location
The location I designed icons
for is The Columbus Inner City
Ministries. The CICM is a local
non-profit Christian organization
run by Pastor Brian and a strong
volunteer team. The ministry
consists of three small buildings in
central Columbus. Each building
contains different outreach
programs the provide means for
those who cannot provide for
themselves or their family.

Church Groups

Signature

I began my research by looking

at various icons that were
currently used to represent the
church. These icons utilized the
impact of positive to negative
space. The boldness made
them standout against most
backgrounds and from a far
distance and close up.

This icon system showed icons

that represented different groups
within the church setting. They
played off a more modern
and childish design as well as
showed a good implementation
of color throughout the system.

The Presbyterian Church

signature is a great example of
thoughtful design. This shows
the process and how every detail
was planned and thought out.

Concepts
Three Different Concepts
Students were asked to create six of the same
icons in three separate and unique styles. Based
on class and Professor feedback, students then
chose a style to work on for their 20 icons.

Icon Ideation Sketches

Concept 1
Explanation:
For my first concept I went for
a very simplistic negative look.
These icons are stand-alones in
the most basic and simple forms.
I wanted to make some icons
that were very readable and
easily recognized by people who
may not have any education.
They have a free flowing look as
well as a mixture of imperfection
because the essence of the
ministry is the acceptation of
imperfection and individuality.

First Sketches

Second Sketches

Final Sketches

I started out my process by

sketching some icons that
represented the words I chose.
My first sketches were all in
curved squares and came at an
angle. I wanted to go for a fun
and interactive look.

My second time sketching I tried

to create three different styles. I
had a difficult time differentiating
between different styles and
creating three unique looks for
each of the six icons.

After going through and

presenting my concepts, I
decided to sketch my final ideas.
This shows the preliminary
sketches for all 20 of my icons
for The Columbus Inner City
Ministry. I then took these
sketches and rendered them in
Adobe Illustrator.

Concept 3
Explanation:

Explanation:

For this rendition, I wanted to

make the icons look as if the
had movement to them. The
downtown area is very structured
and sharp, so I wanted to bring
in icons that would contrast that
and stand out. When presenting
these icons I realized that they
do not work together as an
overall system, but some of them
are successful.

These icons are represented

as a hand drawn look, but they
also have a sense of order to
them. I wanted to give the icons
a younger feel as well as make
them feel fun and welcoming.
After making these I realized
that they were too young for my
general audience. They had a
very child-like feel and I wanted
to go for a young adult audience.

Final Concepts & Testing
In this part of the assignment, students were
required to finish a system of 20 icons and
create a test sheet to use for Audience Testing.
After the testing was completed, students had to
re-work icons based on feedback to create their
final 20 icons.

Grid Structure
Explanation:
These are the 20 icons that I
created before audience testing.
I went with a mixture of my three
concepts from before. I wanted
my icons to convey movement,
utilization of positive and
negative, and still have some
sense of imperfection.
To the left you will see the 20
icons, and to the right you will
see the icons in their grids to
show how I created them in a
similar style.
After finishing these icons, I did
audience testing to test and
improve my icons.

Audience Testing
Typeform:
I conducted my audience testing
using an online survey through
typeform.com. In the survey I
showed a picture of my icon and
asked them to write what they
thought it represented and then
I left space for them to leave
additional feed back.

Typography

Clarendon Bold

Helvetica Regular

Reasoning

Reasoning

I chose Clarendon as the

main type to compliment my
icons. The main building of
the ministry was built in the
1800s. Robert Besley designed
Clarendon in 1845. The boldness
and curvature of Clarendon
compliments and mirrors the
boldness and movement of my
icon system.

I chose Helvetica as my
complimentary font because the
counters are similar to those
of Clarendon. Clarendon and
Helvetica are often times used
together in signage.

attempts I began to rethink the way
I was designing. I then started to
find things that were important to the
ministry and blend them together.

Color Application

Fun & Energetic

Warm & Welcoming

Modern Brick

Color Application
Reasoning:

Buildings:

When choosing a color palette

for my icon system, I was looking
for something that was warm
and inviting, fun and energetic,
and that referenced to the old
brick of the building. These three
colors seemed to convey that in
the best way. The mint blue is a
contemporary color that creates a
calm yet energetic feel. The yellow
makes the building feel welcoming
and warm. The reddish orange
color is a reference from the bricks
of the building but saturated a little
more, giving it a fresher and
happier feel.

Mint Blue- Clothing store

I chose this because I wanted the
store to feel fun and energetic as
well as have a sense of calmness
to it because clothes should be both
of those things at different times.

After choosing the colors, I had to

decide how to use them. I decided
that each color would represent
a different building and the icons
associated with that building. The
generic icons are left in black
because they are used in multiple
locations and if you mix all the
colors you will eventually get a
brownish-black color.

The Location

The Location
Site Analysis/ Research
I had the pleasure of being able to go to the
Ministry location and interview Pastor Brian
and his staff, as well as take pictures of the
location. Being in the building and around
the location truly opens your eyes to the
needs of our city.
The Ministry consists of three separate
buildings. Each building hosts a separate
piece of the Ministry program.
Going to the location helped me see how
my icons could be put into use.

Final Site Map

Reasoning
The Inner City Ministries did not have a
floor plan or site map of their locations,
so I had to start from scratch. I began by
sketching based off of my memory from
being there and from the pictures I was
able to take. I was able to create site maps
of the main floors that were used in the
three buildings.

multiple rooms and even

First Ideation

First Ideation

Reasoning/ Materials
With the signage, I wanted to bring a
more welcoming and natural feel to
the Inner City buildings. I looked for
signs that had a good mix of material
as well as a sense of simplicity.
My original concepts started out with
these square shaped frosted glass
on wood. The mixture of the glass
and wood material is very common in
modern churches.
The wood brings in a nature side to
the inner city feel of these crowded
buildings as well as keeps the
signage modern.

Thought Process
After making the signs, I
realized that the square shape
was hard to implement in the
building, and the glass material
was going to be more expensive
for the nonprofit organization.
I wanted to keep the cost to as
low as possible and also use
signage that would require the

Materials
For the large way-finding signage, I
wanted to continue the natural and
modern look. In the buildings there
is very little wall and floor space so
I knew that I needed to find hanging
signage to optimize space.
I came across this glass signage
system that hung from the ceiling. The
frosted glass went very well with my
original Small Signage System, so I
decided to try and implement my icons
in this way.

Cost

Mobility

After creating the signage, I realized

that the glass signs would be very
expensive to create. If the client needed
a glass sign for every icon in this
building the cost would be prohibitive.

Another consideration I had was

that the client is constantly moving
things around. Not only do they
move a lot around, but they are also
talking about getting a whole new
building, so I knew that I needed to
create something more mobile and
inexpensive to produce.

Final Door Signs Inspiration

Final Door Signs Application

Solution
This signage proved to be a better fit
for the three buildings as a whole. The
dark walnut color meshes well with the
dark color in the brink from the outside
of the building as well as compliments
the color scheme of the icons.

Materials

Cost

After discovering that the first set did

not work with the building, I searched
for new inspiration. The signs above
take a modern spin on the old plaque
signs that are posted beside doors.

These signs would cost significantly

less for the ministry to purchase and
they would be easier to install due to
their very light weight.

These signs are made of a very thin

wood material with a dark walnut finish
to give it that polished look, combined
with a thin metal where the text can be
displayed with braille.

40 Nicole Haines l Visual Communication Design l 2014

These signs would be used outside of

restrooms, meeting places, and other
rooms that are currently unmarked
throughout the buildings.
The icons would be layered on top
of the wood paneling. They would
be carved out of wood and painted
the corresponding colors. The words
would be embossed and colored from
the metal material along with braille.

Final Large Signage Inspiration

Final Large Signage Application

Suspension System
After going back to do some more
research, I decided on a very simple
and inexpensive signage system. The
large signs will be printed on half-inch
foam board and hung by binder-clips
that are attached to the ceiling by
string and suction cup holders.
Other things I have considered are
double clips and tying through the
foam board.

Solution
The signs can either be made by a flat
print onto the foam board, or cut out
and have an embossed look to make
them more professional.

Using foam board is a more cost

efficient way to create signage.
Because the posters are clipped to the
hanging devices, signs can easily be
changed and moved as the ministry
would need.

Metal Clips

Foam Board

42 Nicole Haines l Visual Communication Design l 2014

These signs would mainly be used in

the Clothing Store building as a way to
show people where different articles of
clothing are located.
The other nice thing about the
styrofoam signs is that they can be cut
into different sizes and also mounted
on the wall.
