Dbuts: An Introduction to French (by Siskin, Williams, and

Field) 3rd Edition
Dbuts: Workbook and Laboratory Manual (Part 1) 3rd Edition

Welcome to French 101!

Our major goal this semester is to increase our French communication skills. We
will try to focus equally on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading
and writing.
In class, we will spend as much time as possible speaking and listening. If you
want to learn French, you will decide early to speak only French in class. To
facilitate communication, we will often work in small groups. We will present a
variety to sketches, short lectures and impromptu dialogues in groups.
The more you immerse yourself in a language, the faster you learn. The biggest
obstacle to learning another language is that we usually just dont spend enough
time each day, each week, speaking, reading, listening and writing in the
language. You need to find ways to increase the time you spend with the
language. Speak French as much as possible.
The language lab should have several copies of the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has
many useful activities to help you practice French grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation, etc

Attendance and Participation: Attendance is especially important in

foreign language courses. You need all the exposure to French you can get in
order to make real progress. Absences or chronic lateness to class without
adequate excuse (i.e. illness, emergency) will result in the lowering of your
grade. All assignments are to be handed in at the beginning of class.
NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS!
Journals (6)

Each journal assignment should be at least 100 words in length, and typed. Full
credit will be given if it is completed and turned in at the beginning of class on
the day it is due. Journal assignments are not graded for grammatical accuracy,

but difficulties with important structures and vocabulary will be pointed out. The
first journal is due on Friday August 14th and the next one every other
week.

Homework Assignments & Workbook Chapters

Each class day, I will assign homework. The purpose of the homework is to direct
your studying, to prepare you to participate actively in class. It is your
responsibility to learn the vocabulary and grammar points we will practice in
class before you come to class.

The workbook Chapters (Chap Preliminary-11)

These listening activities are required. The language lab has them on the server.
You will need to go to the language lab in order to complete these activities for
each chapter and turn them in every Tuesday. (We will do preliminary chapter
-11). The Workbook Preliminary Chapter is due Tuesday August 18th at the
beginning of class.

4.

Chapter Tests and Quizzes

We will have chapter tests at the end of each chapter and

sometimes quizzes throughout the semester. The tests & quizzes will be given at
the beginning of class, so plan to arrive ON TIME. If you come later, you cant
take the quiz or test. If you have an unusual circumstance that prevents you from
taking a quiz or a test, please contact me by email and you might be able to
make up the Chapter Test.

5.

Tutoring (Language Lab.)

Each student is responsible for speaking with our tutors at the Language lab for
1hour each week. You and the tutor are to speak to each other ONLY in French.
You will fill out a tutoring form and the tutor will write comments and sign. You
will need to turn in that form every Monday, so the Tutoring#1 is due Monday
August 17th 2015
