Assignment:_Speed of Molecules
Purpose: To determine if the speed of molecules is dependent on temperature.

Hypothesis: If temperature is colder, than molecular motion will decrease, because it

is a slower reaction.

Activity
Materials:
2 Clear Plastic Cups
1 Cup Hot Water
1 Cup Cold Water
Food Coloring (Blue and Yellow)

Procedure:
1. Fill one of the plastic cups with the hot water and one plastic cup with the
cold water.
2. Simultaneously place one drop of yellow and one drop of blue food
coloring into each cup of water.
3. Allow the colors to mix on their own for two minutes as you observe. (DO
NOT mix the water/color.)

Questions to be investigated:
1. In the chart below, record your observations of what the colors looked like
and how they moved and mixed in each temperature of water.

Hot Water Observations

The warm water turned
green first unlike the cold water
turned green slower
The warm water there is
only a little bit of blue
The warm water

Cold Water Observations

When they are cold the
reaction is slower
In the cold water there is
more blue still at the bottom of
the cup
When spun the blue food
coloring dissolved

2. What do these observations tell you about the speed of molecules in hot
and cold water?
These observations tell us that the cold water is kind of someone walking in
the hallway. When you walk you don't run into anyone. The hot water is like someone
running through the hallway. you are running into people. That's how it kind is with the
molecule.

3. What were the controls in this experiment? Choose one and explain why
it was important to keep it the same for both the hot and cold water observations.

One of the controls of the experiment is that the same amount of drops from the food
coloring we did.

Explain it With Molecules

Procedure:
1. Click, (you will need to hold the ctrl button while you click), on the link below to
watch the animation of water molecules being heated and cooled. (Move the slider at
the bottom of the window to increase or decrease the temperature.)

www.middleschoolchemistry.com/multimedia/chapter1/lesson2#heating_and_cooling
2. Based on your observations and the animation, complete the statement below:
Heating a substance increases molecular motion.
Cooling a substance decreases molecular motion.
As molecular motion increases, the space between molecules Decreases.
As molecular motion decreases, the space between molecules Increases.

3. Using circles to represent water molecules draw a model of the molecules in both hot
and cold water. (You can challenge yourself by drawing actual H2O molecules instead!)
*Use motion lines to show the speed of molecules.
* Consider the space between molecules in each temperature of water.

4. If you heat exact ally 100 mL of water in a graduated cylinder and then heat the
water to 100oC the volume will increase.
*Using what you know about the attractions between water molecules and the way heat
affects molecular motion; explain why the volume of water in the graduated cylinder
increases when heated.
