This question has a cultural biases because many countries do not have multiple choice tests
(OMalley &Pierce, p4). I also think that the format of this question is very confusing because if
I did not have the language abilities to understand the question I would be confused. For
instance, I may just circle A B or C. In addition, this question is not testing any critical thinking
skills. I would not choose to do this Yes No format because there is no higher level thinking
(OMalley&Pierce, p5). Finally, this style of question does not allow the teacher to see why the
student is missing the question and without this information, teachers cannot plan on how best to
help the student (OMalley&Pierce p2)
I would rewrite this question to simply say;
Solve and show your work using words, numbers, or pictures.
5 x 1=
4+2=
7-4=

I think that this question has unnecessarily complex language. Confusing and complex language
shouldnt be in tests because it may result in the question testing a students language abilities
rather than their understanding of the content (OMalley & Pierce p4). I would fix this by
changing the question to say Start with 7 and add five each time to complete the table.

I like that this question is not multiple choice because it can test higher thinking skills
(OMalley&Pierce p5). However, I would ask students to show their work so that teachers can
see their thought process. In addition, I think that this question contains confusing language
which may cause ELL students to miss it even if the understand the concept (OMalley&Pierce,
p4). I would change this problem to simply say solve instead of what unknown number..
