Argumento:
La historia se desarrolla en Verona, en donde viven dos familias que son rivales, los Montesco
y los Capuleto. Romeo, nico heredero de los Montesco, entra sin ser invitado al baile de
mascara de los Capuleto, en el que conoce a Julieta, hija nica de los Capuleto; ambos se
enamoran a primera vista. Sabiendo que sus padres jams permitirn su unin, se casan en
secreto, con ayuda de Fray Lorenzo. El mismo da de la ceremonia, Teobaldo insulta a Romeo,
a pesar de ello este ltimo rehusa batirse. Pero Mercutio, el mejor amigo del joven Montesco,
entabla duelo a muerte con Teobaldo. Romeo trata de separarlos y Teobaldo aprovecha para
herir mortalmente a Mercutio. Romeo, entonces reta a Teobaldo y venga a su amigo matando a
su adversario. El Prncipe de Verona, indignado por los sucesos, condena a Romeo al destierro
o a la muerte. Romeo se encuentra desesperado, porque estar separado de Julieta, pero Fray
Lorenzo le aconseja escape a Mantua, hasta que pueda ser publicado su matrimonio con
Julieta y se reuna con ella. Romeo huye a Mantua despus de una ltima entrevista con Julieta.
El Conde Paris, pariente del prncipe, pide la mano de Julieta y le es concedida. Julieta se
niega y pide auxilio a Fray Lorenzo, quien le aconseja que acepte la boda y le entrega un
pequeo franco con un elixir que la sumir en estado catalptico, parecido a la muerte. Le
indica tomarlo la noche anterior a la boda y se compromete a estar con ella cuando despierte
en la cripta de su familia, acompaado de Romeo, despus ambos jvenes escaparan. Fray
Lorenzo enva un mensajero a Romeo (Fray Juan) para que venga por Julieta en el momento
de despertar. Sin embargo, el mensajero no encuentra a Romeo, ya que este avisado por su
criado (Baltasar) de que Julieta ha muerto, sale inmediatamente hacia Verona. Romeo llega a
la cripta de los Capuleto encontrndose con Paris, que iba a depositar flores a su futura
esposa. El Conde se indigna al ver a Romeo, ambos se baten, resultado vencedor el joven.
Romeo se acerca a Julieta, la besa por ltima vez y toma veneno, falleciendo a los pies de su
amada. En ese momento llega Fray Lorenzo, quien se atemoriza al ver los cuerpos de Paris y
Romeo. Julieta despierta y el fraile trata de convencerla para que huya con l, pero la joven se
niega al ver a su esposo muerto. Fray Lorenzo se va y Julieta se acerca a Romeo, lo besa y se
hiere con el pual de su esposo, muriendo abrazando a su amado. Los guardias aprenden a
Fray Lorenzo y a Baltasar. Fray Lorenzo revela la verdad ante el Prncipe de Verona, los
Montesco y los Capuleto. Con la muerte de Romeo y Julieta, se sella la paz entre las dos
familias rivales.

Resumen de la obra por actos:

Prlogo
A manera de prlogo de la pera el coro comenta la rivalidad entre Capuletos y Montescos y el
odio ancestral que los separa. Tambin se evoca el amor de Romeo y Julieta y la tragedia que
unir finalmente en la muerte a los desdichados amantes de Verona.

Primer Acto
Galera en el Palacio de Capuleto Capuleto, un noble de Verona, celebra con un baile de
mscaras la presentacin de su hija Julieta, que cumple quince aos de edad. Romeo y varios
amigos enmascarados llegan al palacio de sus tradicionales enemigos y desde un ngulo del
saln se disponen a observar la magnfica fiesta. De pronto Romeo ve a Julieta sintiendo en su
corazn la llama inextinguible del amor. El joven se acerca, ignorando que la nia es una

Capuleto, de quien un mar de sangre los separa. Julieta escucha emocionada las clidas
palabras de Romeo, expresndole su naciente presin. Jams sus odos han escuchado una
frase de amor y su corazn virginal despierta sbitamente. No son dos seres que acaban de
encontrarse accidentalmente, son dos prometidos que vuelven a reunirse. Teobaldo se acerca.
Rpidamente Romeo se coloca el antifaz, pero ha sido reconocido por el joven Capuleto, quien
le recuerda el abismo que separa a ambas familias: el odio se hereda en ellas como si fuese
patrimonio. La revelacin desconcierta a los enamorados que ignoran sus identidades
respectivas que los torna enemigos.

Segundo Acto
Jardn en casa de Julieta Romeo no teme el odio de sus enemigos y con la esperanza de ver
a su amada canta al pie de su balcn. Aparece Julieta y ambos jvenes se abrazan
apasionadamente con la complicidad de la luna que alumbra apenas ese cuadro de dos eres
que olvidan el odio de sus familias que se cierne sobre sus cabezas. Julieta alerta a Romeo de
que alguien se acerca. El joven rpidamente se oculta entre los rboles del jardn. Aparecen
varios invitados que vigilan la casa. Vuelve Romeo y el tierno idilio se reanuda, desafiando el
peligro de esas entrevistas furtivas.

Tercer Acto
Cuadro Primero: Claustro en un monasterio Romeo visita a Fray Lorenzo en el convento.
Tambin Julieta, acompaada por su nodriza, llega hasta el religioso, quien cree ver en el
encuentro de los dos enamorados una seal del cielo, la esperanza de poner fin a la lucha
entre las dos casas enemigas y bendice secretamente el matrimonio de la pareja. Terminada la
ceremonia, Julieta regresa nuevamente a su casa. Cuadro Segundo: Frente posterior del
palacio de Capuleto Esteban, el paje de Romeo, canta una cancin ofensiva frente a la casa
de Capuleto. Sale Gregorio para reprender al insolente, pero al reconocerlo como a uno de los
compaeros de Romeo, se dispone a castigarlo severamente. La ria se desarrolla de
inmediato sumndose a ella Mercucio y Teobaldo. Llega Romeo quien trata de evitar la lucha,
pues no desea combatir contra los parientes de su esposa. Sus propsitos son intiles ya que
el odio de ambos bandos es mayor por toda reflexin. La contienda se reanuda. Teobaldo hiere
con su espada a Mercucio. Romeo al verlo caer, no puede dominar la fatal herencia de
venganza y empuando sus armas combate con Teobaldo, dndole finalmente muerte.
Teobaldo pide al padre de Julieta que no tarden en vengarlo. Inesperadamente llega el duque
de Verona, quien condena a Romeo a ser desterrado por la muerte que acaba de cometer.

Cuarto Acto
Habitacin de Julieta Romeo, que debe abandonar Verona, ha logrado introducirse en casa
de Capuleto para despedirse de Julieta y obtener su perdn por la muerte de Teobaldo. Tras
esa fugaz noche de amor la despedida reviste tristes contornos por la cruel separacin que se
les impone. Aparecen Capuleto y Fray Lorenzo. Capuleto comunica a la joven que ha resuelto
su matrimonio con el conde Paris, el que ha de realizarse sin prdida de tiempo. Julieta
manifiesta su desesperacin ya que teme contrariar a su padre, pero por otra parte es la
esposa de Romeo. Cuando se retira Capuleto, Fray Lorenzo conforta a la joven y le entrega un
narctico, el que deber tomar momentos antes de la ceremonia. La bebida le dar la
apariencia de muerte por cuarenta y ocho horas; luego podr huir con Romeo. Julieta sigue el
consejo de su confesor e ingiere el narctico, el que no tarda en producir sus efectos. Julieta
cae aparentemente muerta ante la consternacin y asombro de sus familiares.

Quinto Acto
La cripta de los Capuleto
Julieta yace en sopor sobre un lujoso catafalco. Romeo no ha recibido el mensaje de Fray
Lorenzo, por lo que cree a su amada efectivamente muerta. Llega al recinto funerario y la
abraza con inmenso dolor. Provisto del veneno que ha de permitirle reunirse con ella, lo toma
sin vacilar. Cuando empieza a sentir sus efectos, Julieta despierta de su letargo. Pero es
demasiado tarde; los amantes slo tienen tiempo de darse el ltimo adis. Para morir con
Romeo, Julieta busca el frasco del veneno pero lo encuentra vaco. Entonces toma el pual que
su amado lleva en el cinto y lo hunde en su pecho. Ambos confundidos en apasionado abrazo,
entran unidos en el sueo eterno.

Argument:
The story takes place in Verona, where two families live who are rival, the
Montagues and the Capulets. Romeo, sole heir of the Montagues, coming in
uninvited mask dance of the Capulets, which meets Juliet, the only daughter
of the Capulets; both fall in love at first sight. Knowing that their parents
never allow their union, they marry in secret, with the help of Friar Laurence.
The same day of the ceremony, Teobaldo insults Romeo, nevertheless the

engages death duel with Tybalt. Romeo tries to separate them and Teobaldo

it is separated from Juliet, but Fray Lorenzo advises escape to Mantua, until

Summary of the work of acts:
Prologue
As a prologue to the opera chorus says the rivalry between Montagues and
